Man the Firefox development team is releasing new Firefox 2 versions like crazy. Firefox 2.0.0.16 is the latest Firefox 2 release and a recommended update for everyone that is still running version 2 of the popular browser.

The update is a security update that fixes two critical security vulnerabilities that allow remote code execution and the opening of multiple tabs if Firefox is not running. Take a look at the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory articles here and here if you want to read up on the vulnerabilities.

The latest version of Firefox can be downloaded right from the Mozilla website which includes versions for all supported operating systems and languages. Automatic upgrades will be available in the next 24-48 hours as well.

Good news for those users who prefer to stick with Firefox 2 for now. Their browser was updated to version 2.0.0.15 today and it is recommended to update Firefox 2 as soon as possible. The update is a security and stability update which should be available right now from the official download page.

That page is unfortunately down at the moment as are the release notes for that new version. Not exactly sure what’s going on currently because the main pages and the developer news website with the announcement is reachable. The update can also be installed by checking for updates in Firefox 2. This can be done in the HELP menu.

The website is working again. The direct download link and the release notes are now accessible. The update fixed four critical, four high, 2 moderate and 2 low security vulnerabilities. Make sure to update asap.

Firefox 2.0.0.14 has been released and is currently available through the automatic update function in Firefox and the main Mozilla website. The new update to Firefox 2 is a security update that fixes one critical issue, a crash in the JavaScript garbage collector which is actually more of a stability fix than a security fix. The reason why it is still listed as a security fix is that issues like these have been exploited before in the past.

I suggest you update your version of Firefox 2 as soon as possible, users of Firefox 3 seem safe for now and do not have to do anything. The same issue will also be fixed in upcoming releases of Thunderbird and Seamonkey which are not yet available for download.

A new version of Firefox has been uploaded to various Mozilla ftp sites and mirrors throughout the globe which is always a sure sign that the homepage and the automatic updater in Firefox will pick the new version up pretty soon as well. Version 2.0.0.13 is labeled as a security and stability update which means you will not see new features in this release.

The release notes have not been updated yet and I was not able to locate them for this release. Just head over to the official mirror sites to download the new version or wait until it becomes officially available on the homepage and in Firefox.

I would like to thank the Win Addons website for breaking the news.

I think I heard about Wyzo the first time on Techcrunch and thought to myself at that time that no one would need a browser that would be able to download torrents and the files connected to them. But then it occurred to me that this approach would benefit many users, especially those that never came into contact with Bittorrent before.

Instead of installing and configuring a Bittorrent client they would simply use the Wyzo browser to browse and download Bittorrent files. Wyzo is basically a fully working Firefox browser with integrated Bittorrent support. Torrent downloads will be handled by Wyzo internally and are displayed in the download manager like any other download.

Advanced options make it possible to configure this further. Users can set download and upload limits, proxies and change the default listening port. There are not that many options as in Bittorrent clients such as uTorrent but it should be sufficient for most users.

The biggest advantage is that it works out of the box and that there is not really the need to configure the settings unless you want to limit the speeds.

Firefox users may prefer to download the FireTorrent add-on for Firefox which adds the same support to Firefox without the need to download the Wyzo browser.

I personally would stick with external clients because of the advanced options that they provide but I can see the use of Wyzo. The major drawback in my opinion is that many users would not want to download yet another browser just to be able to download torrent files directly.

And there is always the alternative to use Opera instead which comes with build in Torrent support.

If you did install the first beta of Firefox 3 and have Firefox 2 installed on your computer as well you might have noticed that both programs seem to share settings. Firefox 3 tries to load the extension list of Firefox 2 for instance and they get verified again when you start Firefox 2.

There is however a better way to test Firefox 3 without interfering at all with Firefox 2. The solution is called Firefox 3 portable which is basically the same browser created for portable use. The benefit is that Firefox 3 portable does not interfere with your current Firefox configuration at all.

This is great news if you want to test Firefox 3 without having to fear that your properly configured Firefox 2 browser gets damaged or inoperable during that process.

Ryan posted a great tweak if you want to run Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 portable at the same time. This is not possible unless you tweak the FirefoxPortable.ini, located in the Other\Source\ of the FirefoxPortable folder, and copy it into the root directory that contains the file FirefoxPortable.exe.

Open FirefoxPortable.ini and search for the line AllowMultipleInstances=false and set that value to true instead.

Several websites are already reporting the release of the final Firefox 2.0.0.10 version. While this version seems to be indeed the final version it is not available widely on the primary and secondary Mozilla mirror ftp servers. The main server at mozilla.org is giving an interesting Permission Denied error when opting to download the latest Firefox 2 release.

Some other mirrors who already list the new release do not seem to have this protection build in yet which means the download from those mirrors (like Utah) goes through without errors. This version does seem to be a stability and security update but the release notes do not go into any more detail.

They have not been updated and still show information about the release candidate 1 of this version. This new release is not yet available on the Mozilla homepage or through the update function in Firefox.

Firefox 2.0.0.7 is out and can be downloaded from various ftp sites. One of those sites is the main Mozilla ftp site so it’s as good as official. The announcement should be added to the Firefox homepage today as well which means that it is a wise move to download it now before the storm breaks loose.

The update checker is not updated as well yet. This version fixes the QuickTime Vulnerability which was discovered earlier on and it is recommended that Firefox gets updated as soon as possible. As usual Firefox has been updated for all supported operating systems and all localized versions are available as of now as well.

The vulnerability is based on QuickTime Media Link files (.qtl), simple XML files that include details about the media file to be played (like an .avi, .mov or .mp3) and other settings. However one of these parameters, qtnext, allows the publisher to specify a URL (web address) to be displayed when the media file ends. The URL could be a JavaScript instruction like those used in thousands of web pages and services currently.

It seems like only a few days since Firefox was updated to version 2.0.0.5 but the ever busy development team had to release the new version earlier because of a recently discovered bug in the Windows version of Firefox. The new version is already available on the Mozilla homepage and the automatic update routine is also reporting version 2.0.0.6 as the latest version already.

The new version is fixing one critical and one moderate security vulnerability that I listed below for your convenience. Make sure you update to Firefox 2.0.0.6 as soon as possible.

MFSA 2007-27 Unescaped URIs passed to external programs
MFSA 2007-26 Privilege escalation through chrome-loaded about:blank windows

The mozilla team has released a new version of Firefox which can already be downloaded from the Help > Check for Updates menu in Firefox or downloaded from the official download site. Three critical, two high, one moderate and two low security vulnerabilities have been fixed in this release making it a must have update for every Firefox user.

If you happen to download the new Firefox release from the official website you should be aware that you download the full version which overwrites the previous version of Firefox if installed in the same directory. All of my installed extensions are compatible with the new release and I suppose that only a few will not work initially with this release. Below is the list of fixes in this release.

MFSA 2007-25 XPCNativeWrapper pollution
MFSA 2007-24 Unauthorized access to wyciwyg:// documents
MFSA 2007-23 Remote code execution by launching Firefox from Internet Explorer
MFSA 2007-22 File type confusion due to %00 in name
MFSA 2007-21 Privilege escallation using an event handler attached to an element not in the document
MFSA 2007-20 Frame spoofing while window is loading
MFSA 2007-19 XSS using addEventListener and setTimeout
MFSA 2007-18 Crashes with evidence of memory corruption

Versions for all operating systems (Windows, Linux and Macintosh) and languages can be downloaded as of now from the official ftp site. If you get a to many connections message try out this mirror ftp site.

Cautious or inexperienced users should wait for the official announcement but early adopters should go for it. This is the release version and not some nightly build.

The Mozilla team finally uploaded version 2.0 final of Firefox to the ftp servers with the web servers surely to following not later than tomorrow. If you want to be one of the first to download the new final version I suggest you do so with the links for: Windows or Mac / Linux.

The ftp could be really busy at the moment because the link will surely make its round on the internet pretty fast. The version itself should not be that different to the release candidate 3 which was released just a few days ago.

The mozilla team silently released the new, and probably last, release candidate of the upcoming firefox 2 browser. You can download it as usual from the offical website in many different languages and for windows, macintosh and linux. No word on the official pages about the changes in this version, just wait a few days and they surely add some additional information.

So, everyone who does not want to wait should update his firefox 2 beta version to the new release candidate. I will wait until they release the final product, had serious troubles with the first release candidate which crashed a lot on my system. Let me know if you try the new version and find changes or have troubles with the new release.

Seems to be a day for release candidates to go public. After Microsoft released their Vista release candidate 2 the Mozilla team released theirs of the upcoming firefox 2 browser. The following page lists all available downloads for the release candidate 2, many languages and versions for linux, mac and windows. All versions are around 18 megabytes in size.

The release notes for this version show that a lot of things have been added or changed, mainly security related fixes and bug fixes have been introduced in this rc. Firefox 2 adds some functionality to your browsing experience, such as a phishing protection, inline spell-checking and browser session resuming.

Most extensions will not work with this version unless you use a tool that makes them work. I wrote an article on how to enable all extensions in firefox 2.

Tonight firefox 2.0 beta 1 release candidate has been uploaded to the mozilla ftp site and can be downloaded from there. Funny thing that happened to me was that I installed the new version and tried to run it but it would only start a new instance of firefox 1.5.0.4. That is until I tried to run firefox 2.0 without a 1.5.0.4 in the background.

The first thing that happened was a compatibility check and most of my plugins were deactivated because they were incompatible with the new release. The new version looks like the old and feels like the old. Changes have been introduced in the background mainly. One great addition is the anti-phishing feature which adds nicely to other security features of firefox.

I´am typing the text in firefox and there is some sort of real-time spell checking running in the background, real good for me and a great feature. There are surely more features that I did not discover until know but I surely will.

Firefox 2.0 beta 1 release candidate is great for everyone who wants to take a glimpse at the upcoming browser. It is not working with many extensions at the moment, if you rely heavily on them I suggest you wait until the creators are offering support for the new firefox as well.

update: Firefox 2.0 beta 1 final download location
