Not a lot of movies are released exclusive to Bittorrent. The American Prince is the latest movie, or shall we call it documentary, that is exclusively distributed this way. What probably makes it even more interesting is the fact that it was produced by well known director Tommy Pallotta who made great movies such as A Scanner Darkly in the past. Tommy decided that it was time to bring Scorcese’s lost documentary ‘American Boy’ back to life by creating this film and distributing it on a channel that everyone in the world has access to.

Scorsese original documentary was shot more than thirty years ago and influenced many film makers including Quentin Tarantino who used one of the stories of the documentary in his Pulp Fiction movie (the one with the adrenalin shot to the heart). Since the movie was never officially released Pallotta had to collect materials from other sources like Bittorrent or Youtube to get the film done. While he did get a master copy of the film from Steven Prince himself he discovered an even better copy on the Bittorrent network.

The movie can be directly downloaded from Bittorrent. The torrent is linked at Mininova. The movie has a size of about 420 Megabytes. It is already listed on IMDB with a 9.1 rating although it probably will go down when more users start voting.

I do not like Quicktime that much. I hate to use additional clients next to VLC to be able to view certain movies on websites. I also do not like the fact that you can’t save movies easily if you do not use Quicktime Pro. I discovered a method that makes it possible to save movies from the Apple Trailer website to your local drive and watch them in your favorite movie player afterwards. I use VLC for this purpose but Quicktime Alternative for instance should be fine as well.

I’m going to explain the method using an example. I’m really looking forward to seeing the movie 300 which will come out in march. A new trailer for that movie was released a few days ago and I want to download it to my computer to be able to watch it again without re-downloading it. The first step would be to visit the apple movie trailers website.

Click on the link to the movie 300. The main page of the movie shows up where you can select the resolution of the trailer that you want to view. Right-click and select view page source. Find either 480, 720 or 1080. Skip the first and copy the second url that you find.

480 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_480p.mov
720 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_720p.mov
1080 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_1080p.mov

Add the letter h before the resolution, it would like this

480 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_h480p.mov
720 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_h720p.mov
1080 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_h1080p.mov

This is the direct link to the movie. You could use a download manager to download it or save the page once the movie has been completely loaded.

As you might know I have a modded xbox that has a replaced bigger hard drive and I use it to watch movies from my Xbox Media Center. I dislike watching downloaded movies on my computer and transfer them to the Xbox via ftp to watch them on tv instead. I was looking for a solution to add some of my DVDs to the Xbox as well which has the main advantage that I have them accessible all the time from there. No matter if I lend them to someone for instance.

Please note that the following method to convert DVDs into Avi files works only with DVDs that are not copy protected. I will take a look at the possibilities to convert copy protected DVDs in the coming days. The freeware that we are going to us is called Auto Gordian Knot. It is a very simple utility. You basically select an input file from the DVD that has been inserted into your dvd drive.

You will find a so called IFO file on most DVDs and that is the file to choose normally. Sometimes you have to choose a VOB file instead. As a rule of thumb you should view the VOB files that you want to choose before you actually select them to avoid errors such as selecting a menu to be included in the rip.
Once that is done the contents will be read and you have to choose which audio tracks you want to rip as well. You may choose up to two audio tracks, the first audio track is always preselected.

If subtitles are present on the disc they can be included as well, same principle as with audio tracks. After that you define the output size of the movie, the default value is 2 CDs but you may choose anything from 1/4 of a CD to 2 GB.

Size is up to you of course. The smaller options such as 1/4 or 1/2 of a CD should only be applied to single tracks such as episodes of tv series for example. It does not really make sense to add five episodes of a tv series and make the output size 1/4 of a CD which is only about 200 megabytes.

AutoGK has many advanced settings which are not that relevant if you want to quickly rip a DVD. You might want to take a look but you have to know what you are doing in order to change the settings there.

I especially like AutoGK because you may rip DVDs in one go easily. It takes between three and six hours normally depending on the source files and settings that you have choosen. Faster computers will probably need less time. Oh, all codecs needed in the converting process are included which is another great plus.
