Restoring deleted files does not necessarily have to be a complex task that only specialized companies offer. The restoration chance depends on the time that has passed between the deletion and the restoration attempt as well as the activity on the storage device. We have reviewed file recovery tools in the past including popular solutions like Recuva, the Raid data recovery software Raid to Raid, CD data recovery tools or hard disk data retrieval tools.

Glary Undelete is another free file recovery solution. It can recover deleted files from connected storage devices. Users who want to recover deleted files can search for all deleted file information or filter the results by search phrase, size, date or recovery state.

The file recovery tool will then scan the selected partition or hard drive. This can take quite some time depending on the storage size and amount of files that have been on the drive in the past. Glary Undelete will display a folder and file type list in the left sidebar and a file list in the main window. The file list contains file names, the file path, file size and path, a recovery evaluation and the last modified date. Deleted files can be recovered by putting a checkmark in their box and clicking on the Restore button. It has to be noted that it is not always possible to recover a file completely.

Many of the files and folders are recognized by the file recovery software without their original name. They are then listed as folderxxxx in the program. Users who want to install Glary Undelete should pay attention during installation as the program tries to install the Ask toolbar on the user’s computer. Both options in the dialog have to be unchecked to avoid this from happening. Glary Undelete is compatible with most Microsoft operating systems including Windows XP and Windows Vista. It’s a good choice for a second or third try to recover deleted files on a computer system.

DiskDigger is a data recovery software that can be used to recover deleted files that have been accidentally deleted. The software concentrates on the recovery of the three file types images, documents and multimedia unlike other data recovery applications who display all files that can be recovered on a computer system. This limits the range of the data recovery software somewhat but it also means that it is easier to find and recover deleted files if they belong to one of the three types.

The data recovery software is completely portable and will display all hard drives and removable drives that are connected to the computer system after startup. The next page provides a checklist of various file types that can be recovered by DiskDigger. It is divided into the three categories photos and images, documents and Audio & Video. All files are selected by default but it is possible to uncheck file types so that the program is only scanning the hard drive for those file types.

Several popular file formats are missing in the list. The documents category for instance contains only Microsoft Office documents and the pdf format. That’s a limiting factor as it is not possible to add file types to the list.

DiskDigger will display three tabs after that selection that contain the various file formats that have been found on the selected hard drive separated into their three categories. Previews are available for some file types, mainly those located in the image category. What sets DiskDigger apart from other tools that can recover deleted files is that it acts independently of the file system. It should theoretically work with damaged partitions. Other file recovery tools might fail because of that.

Windows does not have a shortage of file recovery tools. Some of the ones mentioned previously are Recuva, Undelete My Files and Smart Data Recovery Enterprise. The newest contender in the ring is called Pandora File Recovery which can recover deleted files on fat16, fat32, ntfs, ntfs5 and ntfs/efs file systems.

Pandora Recovery is compatible with all Windows NT operating systems including Windows NT, Windows XP and Windows Vista. The recovery software provides some interesting features that most of the other software programs do not offer. It lists the available partitions and hard drives and the user can start a scan immediately by clicking on one of the partitions. This will scan the partition for all deleted file information.

The user can browse the partition after the scan. The software application is displaying the name of the deleted file, the path, the creation and modification date and the percentage that it is overwritten. Overwritten files have a lesser chance of being fully recoverable.

Pandora Recovery provides access to a file search as well which can be used to find specific files on a partition. Files can be filtered by partition, name, size and date. The application is also displaying overall statistics about the amount of deleted files that are not overwritten, partially overwritten and completely overwritten.

To recover deleted files the user would simply right-click a file or folder and choose the Recover To option from the context menu. It does also provide the option to quick view the file which can display the contents of the files or show the contents as text if no viewer has been found for the file.

The third function is a deep surface scan which can find file information in the following three cases:

Recovery of files whose MFT record has been reused by OS.

Recovery of files from reformatted media.

Recovery of files from discs with damaged or missing file allocation table.

Think of it as a deep scan which takes much longer to be performed but is more thorough. The additional information and the surface scan are great aids when trying to recover deleted files on a partition.

File Recovery tools are flooding the software market these days and it takes more than to provide a way to recover files to stick out of the masses. Undelete My Files offers several features that make it at least an interesting application to try. The file recovery is obviously the dominating component of the software. Hard Disks can be scanned which usually does not take longer than a few seconds – depending on the size of the hard drive – and the results are displayed afterward. One interesting aspect of this procedure is that multiple hard disks can be selected at once. Most other tools scan hard disks on a per disk basis only.

Another interesting aspect of that scan for deleted files is the option to preview items before they are recovered. Every file can be marked and a click on the preview button opens the file in the default viewer. It becomes pretty obvious if a file can be recovered, chances are slim if the default viewer cannot open it. If the file displays fine on the other hand chances are good that it can be recovered without difficulties.

Undelete My Files provides access to two specialized recovery operations: Media and Mail Recovery. Both target specific files and try to recover them. The advantage of using Media Recovery is that it specifically targets multimedia files offering a preview pane for quick file previews.

Mail Rescue tries to recover Microsoft Outlook Express, MS Outlook, Eudora and Netscape mails. The software automatically tries to locate the installation folders and proposes a system scan if none can be found.

Another function provided by Undelete My Files is the Advanced File Search. That’s a nice function if you know what you are looking for. You can pinpoint the tool to search specific folders, look for certain names and file types, sizes and attributes. Pretty convenient if you want to recover specific files.

The last two functions are not related to file recovery. The first is a disk wiper that deleted existing files on the disk securely so that they cannot be recovered by normal means. The other the creation of a Emergency Disk Image which creates a snapshot of a disk to work with later on. That’s actually a great idea to prevent that deleted files are overwritten by new files and the same way professionals are handling this issue.

Choice is good, most of the time at least but to much choice can also lead to confusion. I’m talking about five applications that practically perform the same operation or a tool that can delete files securely using one of fourteen different algorithms. It’s not really that easy for inexperienced users – and probably even most of the experienced computer users – to find the best algorithm for a task.

Wipe Disk and Wipe Files (via Download Squad) are two applications that can delete disks and partitions or files securely so that they cannot be recovered by normal means. Normal means are those typical file recovery applications like Recuva.

Both applications are available in different languages which can be changed in the Extras > Language menu. The default language of both applications is German. Both are pretty straightforward. A disk, file or directory is added to the queue and one of the fourteen algorithms is selected that delete the data securely.

Some of the algorithms are being used by the Department of Defense, the US Navy or Nato. I would always suggest to use a software like Recuva after deleting data on a disk to make sure that those cannot be retrieved by normal means.

Those algorithms use different ways to overwrite the location on the hard drive that was occupied by the data. A German basic description of every algorithm is available in the program’s help file.

File recovery from old media disks like CD or DVD might become a huge market in the near future. People using them to store important data, like family pictures, documents or videos, will realize that CDs and DVDs won’t last forever and that read errors will happen more frequently. Ever tried to read from a CD that you burned in the last century ? I tried and the CD had lots of read errors although I barely used it in the last ten years or so.

CD Recovery Toolbox is a software that tries to recover data on CDs, DVDs and even HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs with no file size limitations which means that it can recover files of a size larger than 4 Gigabytes which is obviously not an issue if you want to recover data from CDs.

The application is compatible to all Microsoft operating systems since – and including – Windows 98 which includes Windows XP and Windows Vista. The easy to use wizard guides the user through the process which is simply a matter of selecting the drive where the CD or DVD has been inserted into, a target directory on the hard disk to store the recovered files and the selection of the files after CD Recovery Toolbox has analyzed the contents of the disk.

Files and folders can be checked so that they will be recovered in the next step and written to the target directory that was selected in step 2 of the process.

There is no guarantee that all files and folders can be recovered from the disc inserted though. Another application that can be used to recover files from discs is Iso Puzzle which shines if access to several CD or DVD drives is available.

CD Recovery Toolbox on the other hand is the first free tool that I know of that can recover files from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs.

If you are like us you have a healthy dose of paranoia in your blood and if that means going the extra mile we know that you will walk by our sides to get there. Deleting files in Windows does not remove the file from the hard drive, it simply removes the pointer to the file but keeps the data on it.

That’s how file recovery programs like Recuva operate. They scan the hard drive for those deleted files and have a good chance of recovering them. The chance is better for newly deleted files because the chance is lower that their sectors on the hard drive have been overwritten by other files.

You will hopefully agree with us that it is highly impracticable to wait until the file has been overwritten by other files to make sure that it cannot be recovered by normal means.

One solution is to use so called File Wipers and DP Secure Wiper by Dirk Paehl is one of them. It provides three different methods of deleting a file permanently so that it cannot be recovered anymore.

Single Overwrite: This is the fastest way of deleting a file. File Recovery Programs that are freely available on the Internet will not be able to recover the file anymore.
lDoD Wipe: Department of Defense compliant wiping. The file will be overwritten seven times.
Gutmann’s Method: It will overwrite the file with 35 different patterns.

DP Secure Wiper works by dragging and dropping files or folders into the program window. The one thing that is missing in our opinion is a context menu entry that sends files directly to the application.

A few years ago applications that would undelete files were not that common but this has changed tremendously over the last years. Today Windows users get to chose between several programs that bring back files that have been accidentally deleted by the user or system. Free Undelete is another software that adds itself to the pool of file recovery applications.

Free Undelete scans one partition of the hard drive and provides access to all recoverable files and folders that it found during the scan. The scan itself is surprisingly fast, faster than the one by Recuva but this could be due to the way both applications present the data after the scan. Recuva is displaying all files it found in the main window while Free Undelete displays the folder structure of the files.

That’s a great approach if you can remember the folder names of the files that you want to recover. If you cannot remember them you are in for some folder clicking until you find the files that you want to recover because Free Undelete does not offer a search, only a filter that filters the current results by filename and folder name.

This difference matters only if specific files have to be recovered. It is easier to recover all files and folders with Free Undelete because it displays less of them in the main interface. A tip is to always recover files on a different partition than the one the files are being recovered from. It could happen otherwise that recovered files are stored in locations of files that are still to be recovered which will obviously fail then.

If you only have one partition I suggest to use an external device, USB drive, external hard drive or similar to store the files temporary on that device.

The question that some might ask is why one could recover deleted files at all. This is actually a very good question. Windows does not delete the file at all when you press the delete button. It simply deleted the reference to that file and makes the space the file occupied writable again. This means that you can recover most files if you are just fast enough. One freeware that can do the job is Recuva which is supposed to be pronounced recover.

It is developed by the same team that created CCleaner. Recuva scans the hard drive that you have selected and displays all deleted files that it finds in a list. It found more than 60000 files on my E: drive that I could try and recover. Information like filename, path and size are displayed to make it easier to find the files that you want to recover.

Recuva has fortunately a filter option. Just enter part of the filename or path and it will display only those files. It took 53 seconds to scan my 140 GB partition and display the 60000 entries.

I delete files most of the time by pressing down the shift key which will delete them immediately without moving them to the trashbin first. It happens from time to time that I deleted a file that I want to recover, sometimes it is because another file depends on the deleted one or it could be that I need to access the information again that was contained in the file. There is unfortunately no direct way to recover the files in windows which means that we have to rely on third party tools to recover lost files.

Undelete Plus is a file recovery freeware that scans your hard drive for deleted files and recovers them for you. It supports the most common file systems such as fat16, fat32 and ntfs and is able to work with removable devices such as flash memory or disk drives as well. A great feature for a freeware file recovery software is the ability to work on network drives as well.

A little bit of background information why Undelete Plus is able to recover deleted files. Many users do not know that files that are deleted are not removed from the system at once. The complete file still exists on the drive but the reference to the file is deleted. File operations on those sectors make it harder to recover those files but the right tools (professional data recovery) can still detect those files.

This is one of the reasons why I would never sell my hard drives at ebay or other websites. The right equipment is able to check on my data and this is something that I do not want to risk. Even if you wipe it carefully there is the possiblity to recover files. Not with tools like Undelete Plus though.

The scan does not take this long until it is complete, on my 300 Gb hard drive it took about 20 minutes. After the scan finishes all files that can be recovered are displayed in the main window. The left window supplies some filters, you can choose that only a certain filetype is displayed for recovery, a certain folder location or a drive. (you may scan more than one drive).

Just mark the files that you want to recover and choose to keep the original folder structure of the files or move them all into a different folder. Undelete Plus found more than 60000 files that could be recovered on my drive which is a big number, I really have to think of a way to wipe them completely after a set number of days.

Thunder7 recently told me that he bought a used Xbox and discovered that the hard drive was full of music files from the previous owner. The original Xbox uses an internal 10 gigabyte hard drive to store save games, patches, music and images. The new Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3 will also utilize a hard drive and the following tip is also valid for them.

If you do not delete the personal files on the hard drive before you sell the system the new owner will be able to watch, hear and view them just like you did. What Microsoft did not tell you is that it is likely to recover the files even though they have been deleted by connecting the xbox hd to a computer. File Recovery tools work on xbox hard drives as well.

If the new owner knows what he is doing and suspects you had some personal files on the hard drive he might want to take a look. The same holds true of course for every other sort of storage device that you are going to sell. It is possible to recover files even though you deleted them.

The only secure way that I know that would delete the files safely would be to connect the hard drive to your pc and use a tool like eraser to erase the personal files on it.

You need to unlock the hard drive of the xbox before you can access the xbox hard drive in windows.

It is also a good idea to remove account data from the system before you are selling it, this can be done from the menus provided which means you do not need external tools for it.

It is better to have one additional try at recovering the data than to give up if the first program that you´ve been using failed to recover the files. It is even better to already have those programs installed or ready at hand to use them immediately after you have lost the files. Chances that you are able to recover the files are highest right after the incident because no new data was written in the sectors the deleted files occupied.

PC Inspector is avilable for every Windows operating system starting with Windows 95. The tool has a great chance of success if you are using it right after you found out about the data loss. You should also remember that PC Inspector is not able to recover files from hard drives that are no longer recognised by either the bios or windows.

Some of its features are:

• Finds partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged

• Recovers files with the original time and date stamp

• Supports the saving of recovered fimmediatelytwork drives

• Recovers files, even when a header entry is no longer available. Competition products cannot recover such files.

I´am sometimes deleting files holding down the shift-key without thinking much about it. It happens that I delete a file that I did not want to be deleted at that moment because it is still needed on my system. A very easy way to restore files that have been accidentally deleted is Restoration which is a nice little freeware application that scans your hard disk and lists all files than can be either partially or fully restored.

Running Restoration might give you a shock at first use, more than 11000 files were listed on my C: drive that could be restored. That´s a lot of information: I advise everyone to use a file shredder like Eraser for sensitive files and folders. Taking a look at all the 11000 files searching for the files that I would like to restore would take a lot of time, Restoration therefor offers some methods to narrow down the results.

You can sort the results by name, original folder, size and date modified which helps a lot if you know the name of the file or the folder it was in. Restoration also offers the option to enter a partial file name or extension and display only those. This is actually the best option to reduce the amount of files that are displayed. If you are searching for a text document you could make Restoration display all .txt files.

Restoration does not install itself on your system, uninstall and run it from the location that you uninstalled it into. The size is only a little bit more than 400k.

The article Recovering Scratched CDs from hardwaresecrets.com tries to answer this question.

As the CD’s contents are preserved, a scratched CD can be recovered by polishing its plastic surface. If, after carrying out the above cleansing, the CD persists in giving reading errors, just polish the CD with toothpaste. That’s right, toothpaste. It works wonders, and you won’t spend a fortune buying professional cleaning kits. Polish the scratches with a cotton swab, rubbing gently the paste-imbued swab over the scratches until they disappear or until you notice that you have removed them as far as possible. Sometimes the paste may cause new scratching, but it will be merely superficial and easily removed. After clearing the scratches, wash the CD in water.

All three smart pc tools are freeware and have been designed for this special purpose. Smart FAT Recovery makes it possible to recover files that have been deleted on storage devices of that type. Its similar with Smart NTFS and Smart Flash Recovery. Just scroll down on the page a little bit to reach the freeware tools.

If you are like me, a program like Data Recovery might come in handy. The tool works on Fat 16, 32 and NTFS file systems, is of course free to use and can be run from an usb stick or floppy drive.

Another key feature is the ability to search for special strings that should be undeleted. Lets say you have deleted a word document called mortgage.doc and want it recovered. Enter mort into data recovery and the tool looks only for files that have mort in them.

Pretty useful if you ask me, it´s in no way a substitution for professional recovery tools but works well for the purpose it was designed for.
