They allow users to host files on their web servers which can be advantageous when distributing the files to multiple recipients. While some file hosts offer software programs to upload files to their web servers others only provide access to a web interface. The File and Image Uploader is a free software program that can be used to upload files to more than 150 file and image hosts. This is great for users who work regularly with different file hosters but also for those who use a file hoster that does not offer a software for uploading files.

The main functionality is easily accessible from the main menu. A click on the + icon opens a menu that can be used to add files or folders to the upload queue. The user has to select an appropriate file hoster from the pulldown menu. Several option settings are available including if an account should be used or if to large files should be split into smaller parts. It is possible to add multiple files or folders this way which will then all be added to the upload queue.

Accounts for websites that support them can be added in the program’s settings. The options contain a large amount of settings. Next to the account selection are different profiles, connection settings including proxy configuration and the removal of file hosts from the list of available sites. The program will upload two files at the same time which can also be changed in the options.

File Uploader is a portable software program for the Windows operating system.

Take the popular file hoster Rapidshare for example: They always display the free user / premium user page even after starting multiple downloads as a free user. The same can be said for several other file hosting and image hosting websites who do display these kind of pages to their users constantly.

Skip Screen is a extension for the Firefox web browser that skips those pages on various websites. The add-on is currently supporting the following nine file hosting websites: Rapidshare, zShare, MediaFire, Megaupload, Sharebee, Depositfiles, Sendspace, Divshare and Linkbucks.

The add-on for the web browser will automatically skip those pages. A message will be displayed above the Firefox status bar to give the user an indication that pages were skipped. Some file hosters do still require user action to start the download of the files while some will instantly display the save file browser to download the file to the local computer. This is for instance at Depositfiles the case. The developer of the Firefox extension is encouraging users to suggest websites that make use of unnecessary pages.

The add-on is currently experimental which means users need to log into the Mozilla website to download and install the add-on.

The reduction of the daily download quota for Rapidshare premium users and the speed decrease for free users are the two main points that have angered many Rapidshare users.

Users have many different options to find files that are hosted on Rapidshare. Some of these methods include the use of specific Google search parameters that will only search Rapidhshare for the files and file types that the user specified in the search.

Other options include so called Rapidshare Search Engines which maintain their own database of files that are hosted at the file hoster. They usually keep the databases up to date and link directly to Rapidshare for easy file access.

There is another type of site that is offering Rapidshare searches, not nearly as effective as the sites that maintain their own database. So called Google custom search engines do nothing else than to combine the advanced search parameters of Google with a custom search engine that is bringing in revenue for the creator of the search engine. They can normally be identified by looking at the search button. If that button states Google Search you know that it is a custom Google search and not a website with its own database.

It’s reliable and offers very nice speeds most of the time. The system has a downside as well. It servers popup, or more precisely popunder, ads frequently. Adblock Plus for example was not able to catch them all during my first visit and I had to add them to the filter list manually so that they would not be shown again.

The wait time and captcha is not as nerve wreaking as it is at Rapidshare but it still lets you wait a certain time before the captcha is shown and some additional seconds before the download begins. The first two annoyances of netload.in can be terminated with the Greasemonkey script Netload.in Popup Remover and Faster Captcha.

Greasemonkey is obviously required to install the script which surpresses the popups at netload.in and makes the captcha appear faster.

A unique url is created during each upload that lists the links to the files on the various file hosting websites. This is ideal for posting at Twitter or Instant Messengers.
