Scanning a computer system for duplicate files regularly can be beneficial in several ways. It can help save disk space and avoid confusion when working with the similar file that resides in multiple locations. Some systems on the other hand provide better success rates when scanning for duplicate files. Especially those that download lots of multimedia files like photos, images, audio files and videos as these are often downloaded without checking if some of the files are already on the system (maybe under a different name).

The Duplicate File Finder by software developer Auslogic is one of the duplicate file finders available for the Windows operating system. The interface has been designed with ease of use in mind. It begins by selecting folders or hard drives that should be checked for duplicates. It is possible to select multiple folders and drives or just one.

The options of the duplicate file scan are configured in the next screen once the folder and drive selection has been made. The options are divided in the three categories matching criteria, advanced criteria and file types.

Matching criteria defines the aspects of the files that should be matched with each other. These are the name, date and time and size by default with the option to add contents as well (resulting in a slower scan) or remove one of the other criteria.

Advanced criteria can be used to filter out files with a size lower than the size specified in this section of the configuration. File types finally makes it possible to only scan specific file types or all files in the selected folders.

A list of results is then displayed after the program finished the scan. File names, sizes, locations and last modified dates are displayed with the option to select some or all of the files so that they can be deleted. The Duplicate File Finder can be downloaded from the Auslogics website.

Duplicate files can take up valuable storage space on computer systems. They are created accidentally most of the time. Some possible scenarios include date backups but also the download of file packages that contain hundreds or even thousands of files. Most duplicate files are media related, mainly images, videos and music. It can be quite cumbersome and time consuming to check the files on a computer system for duplicates. This is especially true when large collections of files are stored on the hard drives and storage devices.

Duplicate file finders like Duplicate Cleaner aid the user in finding duplicate files. The software program has been designed to scan a computer system thoroughly for duplicate files. It provides access to a file search but also to a specialized music search in its interface. The music search will scan mp3, wma, ogg, flac and ape files on the computer system and compare artists, titles and albums in the meta tags plus the usual file size and file name. Files on the other hand can be checked for various parameters including crc, name, file size and date.

Specific folders and partitions can be added to the scan which will create three listings in the end. One will display the duplicate files found in the selected folders, another will display all zero byte files and the last will display all files that have been scanned by the program.

A selection assistant is provided to make the selection of duplicate files easier. The options offered are quite extensive. It is possible to keep audio files with the highest bitrate, length or sample rate. Other filters include selection by date and time, file size, group, pattern in name or path and those that are not located in a master path.

Scan time will vary depending on the parameters of the scan, the number of folders and files and the speed of the drives. Duplicate Cleaner is a sophisticated computer software program to find duplicates on a computer system.

If you download many images from the Internet, bulk collections for instance from Usenet or P2P, then you will eventually face the problem that you have duplicate images in your collection. Manually exploring and deleting duplicate images should be out of the question if the collection contains 10K+ images unless you really have lots of time at hand. The best way would be to use a software that scans the entire image collection and either automatically deletes all dupes or displays possible hits so that the user only needs to confirm if it is indeed a dupe.

Deduper can do that. This software is easy to use and scans a folder and all its subfolders for images. It gives the user the choice to automatically run and delete images or display ever duplicate that was found so that the user can finalize the process. The user has the choice to select a folder that is save so to speak which means that the duplicate of an image in that folder will be deleted and not the image in the folder specified.

One weak point of Deduper is the fact that it only recognizes binary identical images which means that it does not recognize a dupe if it finds an image in two different sizes or one with text and one without text but the same size. I guess that’s why it’s so fast. A test run on a folder with 18000 wallpaper images did not take longer than a few minutes and had the result that almost 50% of the images were dupes resulting in a saving of more than 700 Megabytes on my hard drive.

Deduper is a nice fast program that definitely has its uses if you regularly download images from the Internet or already have many images on your hard drives.
