Songr is a Windows application that will search ten mp3 search engines for music that the user is looking for. Among the mp3 search engines that are supported are playlist.com, Skreemr or Mp3realm. It will also search Youtube indirectly by utilizing the Justhearit service. The developers plan to add nine mp3 search engines (including Groveshark) to the program to increase the quality and quantity of search results.

A search is performed by entering an album, artist or song name in the search form in the main interface. Songr will then search the various mp3 search engines and return the combined results of that search. The name, duration, bitrate, size, search engine and relevancy are shown in the search results. These information are not always displayed which means that they are only supported by some of the search engines.

A right click on a row in the search results opens a context menu with options to play or download the selected song. Another interesting option of Songr is the search by lyrics feature. The program tries to identify a few words that are entered and displays possible artists and songs which can then be searched for with a double-click.

Songr requires the Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 and is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. It can be downloaded from the developer’s website.

Each music community offers a large amount of music tracks that can be played online in an embedded player. Some music tracks can be downloaded directly because the user who uploaded the track allowed that option. Other songs on the other hand can only be played in the embedded player.

There are however a few options to download those songs from eSnips as well. The first software that I try out for any kind of streaming service is Orbit Downloader and it’s grab++ link grabber.

Orbit Downloader seems to have problems downloading songs from eSnips currently. I was not able to download the full songs, only 50K of the song which is obviously not enough.

The second option is a web downloader that converts the eSnips page where the music is embedded to the download url of the song. That works surprisingly well. One of the few scripts that can do that is the called eSnips Download.

Just enter the url of the website where the song is currently playing and hit the Get Download Link button to receive the url to the song. Another click downloads that song directly to the computer.

If you click on the icon before the song title you add it to your playlist which can be saved, shared and embedded. Instead of trying out random finds you can also perform a search for an artist, band name or title and add those found to your playlist as well.

This means that is is relatively easy to build a large playlist with songs that you like and listen to them while online. The link to the song is displayed as well but not clickable by default.

There is however the possibility to use a program like Grab++ to grab the link and send it to a download manager such as Orbit downloader to download the song. I tested this method and it works perfectly.

This means that you create a large library of songs over time. Hundreds of songs are added daily to the list of recorded songs which are kept for an infinite amount of time. The music that you download from Online Music Recorder is encrypted and you need a special software that decrypts the music using your username and password that you use when logging into the website.

You do find a wide variety of songs and genres and may filter songs by genre to view only the songs of a music genre that you like. Downloads from the server are fine. I was able to download songs with a speed of about 300K.

Once the songs are on your hard drive you have to start the decoder and either decrypt one song at a time or a folder with a lot of songs at once. I suggest to use the latter method because it means that you save a lot of time. Encrypting songs takes only a few seconds.

The Online Music Recorder is a great way to download music legally. It has some limitations though. First, you can only download what they record which might not really be what you are looking for. Then it is inferior to recording internet music streams by yourself using tools such as streamripper or xmplay to save them at once to your hard drive.

I personally like the idea and it is a great way to download music especially for novice users.

Firebug is actually a great web development extension for Firefox which does also list all objects that are loaded with their full url on the server. I suppose you are already seeing where this is going, huh ? You just have to take a look at the objects and filter out the largest files which are most of the time the media files. Copy the url from that file and paste it into your download manager to download the mp3, video or other media file.

Let me give you an example on how to download a mp3 right from myspace. Make sure you have the firebug extension installed.

Visit myspace.com and click on a band’s website, e.g. http://myspace.com/theused
Open Firebug by pressing F12
Play a song
Check the NET tab in Firebug and search for the biggest file
Copy the location of that file (by right-clicking it) and paste it into your download manager.
Rename the file and give it the right file extension, in this case .mp3

This method can be used on almost every other site that offers media files. Want some examples ? Gametrailers, Myspace, Youtube, Armor Games and many more. It is not working with sites that stream content to your PC (like Internet Radio but all others should be fine.)

If you click on the title you will be taken to a detailed page which displays information about the source website that offered the mp3 and the option to download or email the mp3 file. Downloads begin immediately and require no registration at all. The same page lists other mp3 files by the same artist or group which can also be downloaded from Sideload. Sideload partnered up with mp3tunes to offer its users a so called music locker.

This is basically a way to transfer the mp3 files that you like to the mp3tunes online locker. This is great if you can’t download the mp3 files right from Sideload. Just transfer them to your locker and download them later when you are able to download the mp3 files.

I think that this is a good way to listen to great music for free, support the artists that contribute their music and show the music industry that there are other methods to distribute than forcing the customer to buy copy protected, rootkit infested overpriced music cds.

Today I decided to compile a big list of free music sites on the internet, I hope you enjoy this selection.

I encourage everyone to add his site to the list and give a rough intro to it. The list does not contain internet radio stations or streaming services, only sites that allow downloads in mp3 format (its fine if they offer additional streaming services) . I made an exception to sites that offer a huge list of streaming titles, those have been added as well.
