Kids seem to be attracted to the computer and there are lots of software programs for children that are either fun to play with or teach them in a way or another.

Little Voice Commander has been specifically designed for very young kids, who are just starting to learn to speak. The fullscreen program acts on keys that are pressed on the keyboard and words that are spoken by a user in front of the computer.

The listening part requires a connected microphone, for instance one attached to a headset. The software tries to match the spoken words to images that are then displayed on the screen. The same is true for keyboard input, only that photos and images that begin with the letter are shown on the screen.

If you press B or say something that resembles the word birds you get to see photos of birds on the screen plus text that displays the recognized word.

Little Voice Commander runs in fullscreen, you can close the application with the Esc key and open the extensive settings menu with Ctrl-Alt-O.

There is a lot to configure here: From the font size of the displayed text over additional photo directories used to link words or letters to transitions and effects.

One of the coolest features of the program is the ability to add your own photos to it. You could add photos of parents, grandparents, pets or locations that are familiar to the user to add a personal note to the program.

New images are added to a subfolder of the program installation. Just add images in the form name_number to the directory.

The program uses Sapi5 speech runtimes which are part of Windows Vista and Windows 7. Windows XP users may need to install the runtime if they get errors on startup.

Little Voice Commander ships with a set of royalty free photos. You may want to add more photos to the program to improve the recognition of words and add more variety to the application.

All in all it is a great program that will keep kids entertained for some time on the computer. Even better, it makes them associate words with images.

Little Voice Commander is the latest free application offered at Donation Coder. The program is compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows from Windows XP on to Windows 7. Downloads are provided at the Donation Coder website. The SAPI5 runtime is linked on the same page.

Donationcoder Gets Ready For Another Nany Coding Challenge

The Web

coder

donationcoder

free software

nany
<guid

Nany, which stands for New Apps (for a) New Year is held for the fourth time this year and we can expect some great new apps that are published thanks to the challenge. The newsletter lists 27 different entries as of December 2 with enough time for coders to jump in and pledge to code an application for the event as well.

Some coders have already released teasers of their applications for Donationcoder users to test. Among them several interesting applications that we will surely cover here at Ghacks.

Want some examples? How about the Backup Verification Tool by Wraith808 which performs various checks on data backups. It is for instance possible to verify for file existence, checksums or if a file has been modified in the last time.

Another application to watch is Bard by Donationcoder member Justice. Bard, or Best Audio Resource Discriminater (what’s with the passion for acronyms over there?). The program can be used to organize audio files into folders.

Interested users can take a closer look at the official announcement of NANY 2011 at the Donationcoder forum or check <a

It will automatically appear again if you move the mouse in the area of the taskbar. A user on the Donation Coder forum asked if there was a way to prevent this from happening and if it would be possible to display the Windows taskbar only when a key, the Windows key, would be pressed.

Guess what. Ten hours after making the request Skrommel posted a reply in that thread with a link to a software that he had created that would do exactly what the thread starter wanted it to do. To be more precise Skrommel posted the Autohotkey code that could be used to make the Taskbar behave this way.

To sum it up again. This little piece of code automatically hides the Windows Taskbar and prevents it from showing up when the mouse is moved in the area of it. The taskbar is only shown when the user presses the Windows key on his keyboard and hidden again when the key is released.

If you have not checked it out yet I suggest you do so. The Donation Coder forum is a excellent place to learn about new applications and ask for software advise. As you can see if it does not exist it could be that it will be created just for you.

Create your own Flipbooks from Avi files

Tools

create-flipbooks

donationcoder

flipbook

flipbook printer

freeware

gift-idea

holiday-season

mouser

print-flipbooks

Software

Windows
<guid

It makes it possible to create flipbooks from avi files and is easy to manage.

After installing the small file a step by step guide pops up which explains the complete process. It gives you information how to prepare the movie, set the start and end of the movie and to write covers and backs. The program interface looks crowded but with the help of the step by step guide you should be able to create a flipbook quickly and without much troubles.

Flipbook Printer offers a great (and cheap) way of creating a special gift for someone that you like. I would say that not only kids but also women would love this kind of present.
