The Form Letter Machine

The Form Letter Machine can be a helpful software program for users who want to automate the generation of targeted letters. It does so by offering options to configure paragraphs that are set in a distinct order (by grouping items) in the program. It is for instance possible to add different introductions, closing lines and middle parts to the program. A letter could then be generated by simply selecting the pre-written paragraphs that fit in the specific case.

Groups can consist of radioboxes or checkboxes. Only one paragraph can be selected per group if radioboxes are selected while checkboxes allow the selection of multiple paragraphs.

The example above consists of three groups with two of the groups using radioboxes and one checkboxes. Here is what Mouser has to say about his program:

The Form Letter Machine is a program that will help you to write letters and emails by mixing and matching from pre-written paragraphs.

It’s useful for people who regularly need to send out emails which include different components in different circumstances. For example if you field technical support requests, or if you need to reply to various inquiries, etc.

It enables you to assemble text from multiple paragraphs, each one customized for a specific type of inquiry or response. You can build your own configurations using checkboxes and radioboxes and nested groups, and then easily write new letters or respond to inquiries by checking off the components you want to include. A real-time preview allows you to view the message as it is composed. The program also supports user defined variables, which allows you to quickly personalize the template with a name or other data that is specific to the task. The text is then copied to the clipboard and can be used in your e-mail program or word processor.

One interesting option is the use of variables in texts (for names and other parameters that might change). Variables can be easily defined in the interface and filled with values which appear instantly in the text.

Mouser has created a website for the program which is a repository for user generated form letters that can be used in the software program. The Form Letter Machine is available for download at the Donation Coder website.

Multi Monitor Control

Most users with multi monitor systems run the computer monitors side by side. Some users on the other hand use systems where the other computer monitor is not directly viewable, e.g. one normal computer monitor next to the computer system and a media center TV in another location.

Multi Monitor Manager is a lightweight portable solution to control multiple monitors that are connected to a computer system from the main system. The software program will immediately display the screens of all connected computer monitors with the option to interact with each of them using the computer mouse and keyboard.

A click on a computer monitor window makes it possible to interact with the elements that are displayed on the computer screen. It is possible to resize the screen for better access. This is recommended as the default window size is rather smallish. Everything that can be done directly on a computer system with the mouse and computer keyboard can also be done using the Multi Monitor software. This includes opening and closing programs, typing text, launching commands or taking screenshots.

The multi monitor manager uses mostly cpu resources while running but barely any computer memory. Users who operate computer systems with multiple monitors might want to check out the portable software program. It was developed by Skrommel who is a member of Donation Coder. Windows Clipboard Enhancer CCCCtrlC

Many users feel that the Windows Clipboard is missing features that would greatly improve working with it. The option to remember multiple clipboard entries is probably the most popular feature that is missing from all versions of the Windows operating system. CCCCtrlC is a lightweight Windows clipboard enhancer that changes this by offering the functionality to save up to five clipboard entries without interfering with the default clipboard program.

The software program runs quietly in the background and can only be seen in the task manager or by pressing keyboard shortcuts. The default Windows clipboard can still be used by pressing CTRL V to copy an item to the clipboard and CTRL C to copy it from the clipboard.

CCCCtrlC comes into play if the user presses the same keyboard shortcut for a longer period of time. It will then display a small clipboard selection screen in the lower right part of the computer screen (even if the Windows Taskbar is located elsewhere). The selection will display underscores and Cs. Each position stands for one clipboard entry where entries with an underscore are blank slots while those with a C are slots that are already filled with information.

Pressing and holding CTRL C will then cycle through the slots and save the information in the selected slot once the keys are released. Pressing and holding CTRL V on the other hand will cycle through all slots and paste the information of the active data field once the keys are released.

A few additional hotkeys are available. CTRL Insert X will erase all extended clipboard entries but keep the standard clipboard entry. CTRL CV will display the help file while CTRL Insert V will display a system tray icon that offers the options to suspend the hotkeys, pause the functionality of the software or to exit it.

CCCCtrlC uses less than four Megabytes of computer memory. It is available at the Donation Coders website.

Trout Is A Lightweight Free Music Player

Trout is a lightweight free music player by Donation coder member Skwire. It was born out of one of the coding challenges and has since then evolved into a music player packed with functionality. It is on the other hand a bare bones music player without a fancy skin and visualizations. Users who do not need these features or want a secondary audio player for certain situations might want to read on.

Trout can be downloaded as a portable version or installer. It supports a wide variety of audio formats including mp3, ogg, wma, flac and others. Music can be loaded by dragging and dropping files or folders into the interface or by using the menu toolbar at the top. All audio files that have been loaded into the player are displayed in the playlist area in the lower half. This area contains not only information about the names of the songs but also information about bitrates, sizes, artist and album tags and more.

Songs can be sorted by clicking on one of the columns. It is for example possible to sort by album, artist, playing time or filename. Trout offers a set of features that many expect from today’s music players. This includes support for Internet radio streams, freeDB support for audio CDs, compatibility with most tag formats and tag editing, hotkeys, lyrics, album covers or various play modes. Track announcements are another interesting feature that are great when listening to audiobooks.

The minimized music player needs less than 3 Megabytes of computer memory while playing and therefor ideal for low end computer systems. The free music player Trout is compatible with all Microsoft operating systems from Windows 9x on including Windows XP and Windows Vista. It can be downloaded directly from the developer’s website.

Display All Active Windows Hotkeys

There is not an option in the Microsoft Windows operating system to display the list of active Windows hotkeys. Windows hotkeys in this regard are all global hotkeys that are registered in the operating system either by the operating system itself or a third party application. This can be problematic if you want to assign new global hotkeys but want to make sure that these do not interfere with already existing ones.

Active Hotkeys is a lightweight computer software program for the Windows operating system that can display all active hotkeys of a computer system. It does so by testing all possible combinations. The main interface offers two selectors on the left side. The first is called modifiers and is a selection of Alt, Windows, Ctrl and Shift combinations that can be selected. It is possible to test all combinations or only selected ones. Selecting only the Windows modifier will only check the selected keys in combination with the Windows key but not Alt, Ctrl or Shift.

The second group are key groups. This ranges from alphabetical over numbers to functional keys and punctuation. It is again possible to select some or all of these key groups. A user selecting all modifiers and all key groups would test all possible Windows hotkey combinations on his computer system. A right click on one of the two selection groups displays quick selection possibilities, e.g. checking all items, or only two-key modifiers.

The program will then test the selected combinations and display all results in the main window.

The results list can be sorted by various parameters including modifier, key, active state and others. The program cannot tell which application registered the key as Windows does not provide these information. Active Hotkeys is a portable software for the Windows operating system that has been published at the Donation Coder forum.

Access Folder History With Folder Cache

How often has it happened to you that you closed a folder only to reopen it again several minutes later? There is not much that you can do but to click all the folder icons again until you reach the desired folder in the folder hierarchy. Third party tools or desktop indexing programs might help but the majority of users is not using them. If you want something simple, lightweight that works out of the box then Folder Cache might be exactly what you are looking for.

The portable software program has been designed by Donation Coder member Miles Ahead. It is a compiled AutoHotkey application which means some antivirus programs might identify it as a false positive. The program remembers the 24 most recent folders of the Windows operating system and provides easy access to them when needed.

It will sit quietly in the Windows system tray for most of the time and can be activated by pressing the keyboard shortcut [Shift Page UP]. This will open the main program window displaying the most recently opened folders.

The most recent folders are located at the top. A double-click on any folder will open it in a new Windows Explorer window. It takes a second or two to open the folder meaning the delay is noticeable but still way faster than having to open the folder manually in Windows Explorer again.

There are a few aspects that might be worth changing. The delay should be investigated and if possible reduced to speed up the process. It would be nice if the software developer would add preferences to the computer program. Thinking of settings to change the number of recorded folders. Another interesting feature would be the addition of permanent folders in the interface that the user could add.

Folder Cache is a lightweight tool for users who work (a lot) with Windows Explorer.

Sort Files Folders Automatically

If you are a messy downloader – that is someone who likes to place all downloads into one folder which grows very large in size over time – you might need a tool to sort the files and folders in that download folder automatically. There are other scenarios where sorting files and folders might come in handy. Maybe someone gave you a DVD full of files or you finally decided to move the downloaded P2P files from the incoming folder.

Whatever it is sorting them automatically is probably the wiser choice than performing that task manually. I Like To Move It is a small portable software program for the Windows operating system that can automatically move files and folders to another location. A ini file is used to define the rules. Thankfully it is usually only once necessary to edit the ini files to suit individual needs. Files and folders will be separated by default. All folders are moved with the files they are containing to the location and placed into a main _folders directory. The files on the other hand are moved based on rules defined in the ini of the program.

About 20 different file extensions are already defined in the ini files. It will for instance move multimedia files into appropriate folders. This includes audio files like mp3 or ogg into the audio folder or doc and pdf files into the document folder. Executable files are handled differently as the program recognizes files like ini or cmd files that belong to that executable file. These will also be moved.

It is possible to add additional extensions easily in the ini that can either be placed in one of the existing folders or into a new one. Files will be overwritten by default if they are found in the destination folder. This can also be changed in the ini. The process of moving does not take long and the application can be closed after the process has finished.

Block Mouse And Computer Keyboard On Hotkey

There might be special situations where you want to block all input devices from sending signals to the computer system. Block Input (via Shell City) is a small portable software program that can block both the computer mouse and computer keyboard for a certain time. The software application is hotkey driven and will disable the input devices for the configured amount of time.

In which situations might this come in handy? In all were mouse and computer keyboard usage might interfere with another process, be it statistical analysis or programs that react immediately on mouse or keyboard input and where this is unwanted.

The time that the computer mouse and keyboard are blocked can be defined in the program’s options. There is also an option to change the hotkey that starts the blocking from CTRL Q to another hotkey.

The program will display a tooltip next to the mouse cursor that is counting down the remaining seconds that all input devices are blocked on the computer system. The software program adds itself automatically to the Windows System Tray. A right-click will open a context menu that provides links to the program’s options. It uses roughly 4 Megabytes of computer memory while running and should be compatible to most versions of the Windows operating system.

Audiobook Sleep

Are you one of those users who likes to doze off while listing to an audiobook that is playing on a computer or laptop? If you are you might have experienced several problems related to that like not knowing the exact position that you stopped listening to the audiobook because you fell asleep or the problem that you woke up in the middle of the night only to listen to the part where the murder was uncovered.

Audiobook Sleep is a lightweight application that has been created with the Autohotkey software and published on a request at the Donation Coder forum. It can be downloaded right from the developer’s website. The full program has a size of only 211 Kilobytes after unpacking, a click on AudioBookSleep.exe will start the interface.

While it surely does look like any other shutdown sleep timer it comes with a feature that makes it a tad more interesting to use. It makes use of Minicap or more precisely minicap.exe which has to be placed into the same folder as the audiobook sleep software program. Placing minicap.exe into the same folder will make the software create a screenshot of the computer system’s desktop before the shutdown process.

What does that mean? You not only get an application that shuts down the computer system after a certain amount of time but also a screenshot of your computer desktop displaying the play time of the audiobook. Next time you want to play the audiobook you start looking at the screenshot to check the play time and start listening from that position.

Pick Me Selects Random Files From Directories

If you got a large hard drive with all kind of multimedia files you might sometimes need someone else to tell you what to watch or listen to. We all have this moments of indecision where to much choice can make it harder to make a decision. Shall I watch 24, Lost or The IT Crowd? Do I want to listen to Rock, Heavy Metal or Country?

Pick Me is a friendly computer program that will make the decision for the user. The user basically points it to a directory on his hard drive and selects the extensions that the software program should consider. Pick Me will then pick a number of files that meet the criteria from the hard drive and present the choices to the user.

The default number of results is 10 which can be changed in the options as well. Pick Me displays the results in a list. A click on a result will highlight it in Windows Explorer which means it takes just a hit on the enter key to start the playback.

The software program could need a fee additional features like the ability to save the preferences or multiple profiles for different file types, e.g. music, videos and text. It would also be great if there would be an option to automatically pick and play the first file in the list.

The application has been created over at Donation Coder so chances are good that the changes will be implemented. The software is completely portable and requires the Visual Basic 6 Runtimes which should be installed on most computer systems.

Donation Coder Fundraiser

The Donation Coder website and community is special. Not only because I have a long standing relationship with several of its members but also because it is taking an approach that most other sites on the Internet does not take. Instead of relying on online advertisement to fund their projects they rely on donations from their community. Those donations are put into good use to pay for the server costs, websites and also some of the regular goodies that they throw at their users and members.

The last fundraiser was more than two years ago and they started a new round just yesterday asking their members and friends for donations that they can spare. There are quite a few reasons why I like the Donation Coder. They do produce some fantastic programs that I use on a daily basis. But the software is only one aspect of the website. If you ever participated in their forum you might have realized how helpful they are. Just post an idea about a new software program and watch what happens. It is not seldom that you get a working piece of code after a few hours that does exactly what you wanted.

If you look at the Donation page you notice that they want to raise a total of $8000 and are currently stuck at $899. It would not be the Donation Coder site if they would not have come up with a crazy chart that is suggesting a donation amount based on the annual income and the love of the site.

I personally have not donated before (shame on me) and I figured that I should do so before even starting this article. I suggest you do the same if you like Donation Coder software and have a few bucks to spare. It’s money well spend. Rock on!

Monitor Folders By RSS

If you are one of those Internet users living in their RSS feed reader you might like Folder RSS. Folder RSS is a folder monitor that creates a valid RSS feed that can be accessed using any RSS reader. The feed will contain the changes made to specified folders. The software program is fully portable and script driven meaning that it is necessary to write a short batch script or run the software from the command line to create the valid RSS feed. It should also be noted that the feed will be updated locally which is not a problem for desktop feed readers. The use of feed readers like Google Reader on the other hand would require to input the IP of the local computer along with the path to the feed making sure that the remote feed reader is allowed to access the file on the local computer.

So how does Folder RSS work? A click on folder-rss.exe will explain the command line basics. It basically involves launching the same executable with a series of parameters that define what to watch and how to watch it. The basic command is folder-rss.exe [parameters] [folder to watch] [output file path]. The command folder-rss.exe c:\downloads c:\downloads.xml would create an RSS feed containing the latest changes to the c:\downloads directory. The RSS feed would be accessible by loading downloads.xml (or file://localhost/C:\download.xml)

Folder RSS comes with a set of optional parameters that can be used as filters. It is possible to to configure settings to monitor only files, folders or a specific file extension. It can also be used to change the maximum age of the files, the maximum amount of files that get displayed and to include Read only, Hidden or System files.

The RSS feed is not automatically updating itself. It has to be executed to update it. This can be done with a simple batch script that the user clicks on or that gets added to a task scheduler.

35 New Donation Coder Applications

New Apps for the New Year (NANY) is the motto of the Nany Challenge over at Donation Coder. It’s already the second year of the challenge and lots of new software programs have been released during that challenge. To be precise: 35 new and free software programs have been released which more than doubled the count of last year. Each application can be downloaded right away from the Donation Coder website and works without registration or other inconveniences.

We have already covered two of the applications and would like to recommend a few more that might be interesting to try out. Comparer is a file comparison tool that can compare (among other things) all file properties. File Replicator is another interesting program. It can search for a certain file in a selected folder and replace that file with another one. Think of updating files that reside in multiple locations on the computer’s hard drive.

I do not want to spoil the fun of exploring all those new programs. What you find there is a wide variety of software programs from Notepad++ plugins to cryptographic applications and a dog breeding records keeper. It is definitely worth a visit; And who knows, maybe you find the program there that you have been searching for all of your life.

Panic Button

A Panic Button or Boss Key is a software program that will hide certain visible elements on the computer screen when it is pressed. The software applications usually hide windows and programs that are running at the moment the panic button is pressed.

Dad’s Around is a panic button software that was created as a contribution to the Donation Coder NANY 2009 programming challenge. The software program is supplied in 7z format which means that a unpacker supporting that format is needed. The software itself is portable and can be run from any location without installation.

It provides access to four options that can be activated with the [Windows Z] key by default. The options can be configured by right-clicking the system tray icon after execution. The possibilities are to silence WAVE audio, kill the actual foreground process, minimize all windows and show a black screen. Each option can be activated or deactivated separately.

The hotkey can be changed as well in case it is interfering with existing hotkeys on the computer system. The program uses roughly 5 Megabytes of computer memory while running.

Open Multiple Applications With A Single Click

Many users have some kind of sequence they perform every time their operating system finished loading. They start their favorite applications using shortcuts, the start menu or an application launcher. But no matter which way they choose they always have to perform the action several times until all applications are started. I usually load a web browser, an email client and a feed reader at the beginning with additional programs following minutes later.

What if you could bundle applications together so that one click – one execution – will open them all. Lacuna Launcher is a contribution to Donation Coder’s NANY 2009 challenge. What does it do? The portable software will launch all applications that are specified in a text document that gets loaded during application start.

Unzipping the software will reveal the application itself and a text document that contains a link to Notepad. This is being used as an example and can be modified accordingly. Just place one application per line including its full path in the text document. You can also point the application to shortcuts in case you want to launch applications with startup parameters.

There is also the possibility to start Lacuna Launcher with startup parameters. You can use it to launch application groups by pointing each shortcut to a different text document on the computer. The shortcut makes use of the two optional parameters delay and pause. Delay specifies the time in seconds before the first application will be started while pause defines the idle time between the application launches.

Lacuna Launcher can be used to delay the startup of applications during Windows startup by moving a shortcut to the application into a Windows startup folder. This is an alternative to the startup software we covered earlier today.

Copy Command Line Outputs Directly To The Clipboard

If you regularly save command line output into text files to process it further you might like a solution that copies the output directly to the clipboard to be able to process it faster. One of the best places to find tiny but useful applications is the Donation Coder forum and ClipCopy, the tool to copy command line output directly to the clipboard, was discovered there as well.

ClipCopy is a portable software for the command line that can easily be used to copy output directly to the Windows clipboard. The easiest way to use the software is by appending it to the command issued. To copy the output with Clipcopy one would simply use the command dir | clipcopy

The output size is not limited which means that it can copy large amounts of data to the Windows clipboard easily. The command will not echo the dir command in the command line. Clipcopy provides an option to do both. This is done by appending the -e parameter to the command. The full command would be dir | clipcopy -e for that.

It is also possible to output clipboard contents to the command line with clipcopy -g which can also be combined with the command to output the clipboard to a file with clipcopy -g > file.txt.

Lastly there is the option to output text to the clipboard with clipcopy text.

Custom Desktop Logo

Eric Wong is a regular software contributor and regular at the Donation Coder forum. His latest software program is called Custom Desktop Logo which is another interesting piece of software. It can be used to display a permanent logo on the computer desktop which could be great for public computers or during presentations.

Custom Desktop Logo is a portable software that will load a default logo at startup which is always on top in the right lower corner of the computer desktop. The program’s options provide means of moving the desktop logo on the computer screen and even offer multi-monitor display modes in case more than one monitor is connected to the computer. This includes virtual monitors on one computer in case the user makes use of those as well.

It is possible to change the Z-level of the logo from always on top to normal and always on bottom behavior in case that is preferred. Images can be scaled if that is needed. Interestingly enough static and animated images are supported.

The opacity of the image can be set as well as the frames per second and the delay between animations when an animated image is displayed as a custom desktop logo. Only images with the png extension can be loaded into the application and displayed as desktop logos. It is therefor not possible to load animated gifs as desktop logos. The only possible way is to load multiple png images and name them sequentially using numbers.

Screen Capture Software Screenshot Captor

MWSnap was the program of choice for a long time to create screenshots of software programs to post at this website. It was small, hotkey driven and provided a fast and efficient way of creating screenshots. It had some limitations though like no image editing options at all. It is sometimes appropriate to highlight the important part of a screenshot which could not be done with MWSnap.

Screenshot Captor by Donation Coder Mouser is another screen capture software and it feels like comparing Wordpad with Microsoft Office Word. Screenshot Captor was recently released in a new version and it provides functions that many users will find attractive and useful.

It obviously supports capturing various parts of the computer screen like program windows, selected regions, fixed sized regions, the entire screen but also scrolling windows and objects which is one of the additions in the new version.

The screen capture software can be managed from the program’s interface or by using hotkeys – which can be changed to preferred key combinations – to speed up the screen capturing process. The process of capturing a screenshot is not slower than capturing a screenshot with MWSnap.

Screenshot Captor shines when it comes to processing a captured screen. MWSnap was only able to save it in various formats while Mouser’s software can add elements to the screen before saving it. It is nevertheless possible to simply save it and use it that way. Users who like to add text, images or objects to screenshots on the other hand will find all the tools they need to do just that.

By default Screenshot Captor displays a small dialog after taking a screenshot that can be used to print or save the image, copy it to the clipboard or create a thumbnail of it plus various other possibilities. That dialog can be disabled in the program’s options but it is quite useful for those users who want to take a screenshot and save it right away with processing it further.

Captured screenshots can be shown in the main program interface where they can be processed. The image can be resized, text can be added, sections of the screen can be highlighted and objects added.

Previous screenshots are shown in the capturing history which provides a fast way of accessing them from the program’s interface. Another interesting option is the support for third party tools. It is easy to integrate them in Screenshot Captor and use them to process the images further.

The homepage links to a few additional tools that can be integrated like a color chooser to discover the exact color of a pixel of the screenshot.

The screen capture software should be the right application for anyone who takes screenshots regularly. Users who process their screenshots afterwards will find all the tools they need to do just that without the need to install an image editor to do so.

Windows Extractor

Another interesting Windows software application came up in the Donation Coder forum the other day. A user was asking for an application to maximize part of a window or control to fullscreen with the option to return it to its initial position later on.

Eric Wong who already contributed quite a few applications mentioned his software program Windows Extractor which can be used to easily extract controls, elements and windows from the parent application and provide access to them in their own window which can either be displayed in fullscreen right away or the default size which allows for resizing and moving the extracted window contents.

Windows Extractor offers some interesting applications. It is for instance possible to extract videos out of websites and play them in their own window. Even more interesting is the option to move windows and controls out of applications.

Imagine extracting a window out of an image editor like Adobe Photoshop or software development application like Visual Studio and moving that window to a second monitor screen.

Working with Windows Extractor has been designed to be as simple as possible. The application uses two hotkeys to extract windows at mouse position and restore the extracted window back into its original interface. The F10 key extracts the window at mouse position while F11 restores its position. The hotkeys can be changed in the program interface.

Two sizing modes are available: Full Screen and Windowed. Full Screen mode will show the extracted window in fullscreen while the windowed mode allows for resizing and moving. It can happen that the program crashes if a Window cannot cope with the extraction.

Windows Extractor requires the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 or higher and compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP and windows Vista. The Source Code is provided on the homepage of the software program as well.

Insert Unicode Characters Easily

Users who regularly have to write characters of different languages, be it in emails, spreadsheets or presentations, have usually a hard time adding those characters to their documents. This is definitely a thing of the past with the release of Easy Unicode Paster from Donation Coder Eric Wong. The project is target towards English speakers but can also be used by others (obviously) who need to access Unicode characters not supported in their keyboard setting.

The Open-Source application comes with over 100 different Unicode character sets from Arabic overCherokee, Latin to Yijing Hexagram Symbols (whatever that is). The interface is activated with the keyboard shortcut CTRL 1 which is giving access to all the different character maps that are supported by the software program.

Easy Unicode Paster remembers the last character set that has been used and presents its maps directly after bringing the application to the front. The program remembers the exact window size and position upon exit which means that it will show up in the exact same place during next program start.

The sizes of the fonts and buttons can also be changed directly in the software program by right-clicking in the interface. Another excellent quality Donation Coder release.
