Embed GoogleDocs presentations on your website

While browsing the GoogleDocs blog I found an interesting update about two updates already in this year. The less significant, although probably better update if you want to organize yourself is the ability to add sub-folders. For me this was a much awaited feature since no matter how many tags and other organizational stuff I can add, a good folder structure is always a must.

Document viewers: one to rule ‘em all

Now seriously. Have you ever received a document (a clean one) with an extension you never heard of and didn’t even know what application you were supposed to use to open it? That’s not a problem any more due to applications and online services that can understand varied file formats and display the contents of those files for you. Of course, you can’t edit such files with viewers because their only purpose is to display the contents of the document. But hey, better that nothing, ain’t it…

Scan, Fax and Copy with your mobile phone

I always thought it would be nice to put the camera that most mobile phones are equipped with to got use and have a software that would make it possible to take a picture of a document and fax or send it to someone using the same phone. I don’t have a fax because I rarely need it but I miss it dearly whenever I need it.

Scribd, a youtube for documents

It was only a matter of time until someone put youtube clones on the web that did not concentrate on movies but on other files such as documents. Scribd is one of the first sites that gives its users the opportunity to upload – or even bulk upload – many types of documents including pdf, txt and doc. Every single document can be downloaded in the same three formats even without being logged in, much similar to youtube.

Orb is a free software that changes your pc into a streaming server. If the Orb software is running on the pc every other device that has internet such as the Nintendo Wii, a notebook or pda can connect to a website and view any media file that is shared on the streaming server. The setup is really simple. Download the Orb software and install it on the computer that you want to use as the server.

Free Online Conversions

Sometimes you download filetypes that your computer can’t read because of a missing viewer or that you would like to transport to a portable device that only reads certain filetypes. Instead of download several programs that are able to convert the files you have into the filetypes that you need you could use the online file conversion website Zamzar to do the same.

Convert your Documents into one Format

You have got lots of different file formats on your computer: jpg, jpeg, gif, bmp and png or rtf, txt, doc and pdf for instance. The big question that comes to my mind is why do we need that many formats. Most file formats offer no gain over the other, would not it make sense to convert all files of a certain type to one format only ?
