Docsyncer was mentioned on the Digital Inspiration blog as a service that automatically synced Microsoft documents such as doc and xls with the Google Docs web service. This can be incredible helpful if you do use Microsoft Office and Google Docs. This could for instance be the case if you upload your Word or Excel documents to Google Docs to be able to work with them on a different computer.

The application automatically scans your computer – in the Beta currently only the My Documents and Desktop folders – and syncs them with Google Docs and the Doc Syncer web service. New document versions are updated automatically which means that both the computer you are working with and Google Docs will contain the latest version of the documents.

Microsoft Office is not really needed to use Doc Syncer. If you find that Google Docs is sufficient for your editing needs you could only use that service and download files to your computer when needed. You could still use Wordpad or Open Office to edit the files locally, the syncing would again be taken care of by Doc Syncer.

The connection to Doc Syncer and Google Docs is SSL encrypted. The new Office documents such as docx aren’t supported yet and give an unsupported error when trying to open them. They are however shown in the Doc Syncer interface.

I would prefer that they are either filtered or that the option to open them in Google Docs would be inactive. But this can be easily fixed before the public version will be released. The team should work on a tutorial or help file that explains the most basic steps. I was not able to find information about the update frequency as well.

It was only a matter of time until someone put youtube clones on the web that did not concentrate on movies but on other files such as documents. Scribd is one of the first sites that gives its users the opportunity to upload – or even bulk upload – many types of documents including pdf, txt and doc. Every single document can be downloaded in the same three formats even without being logged in, much similar to youtube.

The document formats however add some functionality that youtube is not able to include at the current time. It is possible to search documents for phrases which is only working if the document has not been scanned of course. One of the nicest features of Scribd is however that you can download mp3 files of the texts or listen to a slightly robotic sounding voice that reads the complete document to you. All documents can be embedded in websites

Interaction is important for sites like Scribd and they have been doing a great job to act possibilities. Users can vote for articles and leave comments. Similar documents are shown in a sidebar and every document is tagged to find even more documents that are classified in a similar manner.

I like Scribd a lot. They seem to have a problem with copyrights though. A quick search for php for instance revealed Php for Dummies for instance that should never appear on Scribd. Users do upload mag scans as well, I was able to read the latest Macworld online because a user uploaded it to Scribd.
