Fourth day of the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway. We already handed out Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, Newsbin Pro, Giganews Accounts and MediaMonkey Gold licenses. Today’s giveaway is Display Fusion Pro, one of the better, if not the best, multi-monitor desktop wallpaper and window management applications.

Display Fusion can be downloaded as a free version from the developer’s website with limited functionality. The pro version of Display Fusion can be ordered as well on the same website. The version comparison between Display Fusion and Display Fusion Pro list the features that are only available in the Pro version including wallpaper rotation, custom hotkeys or the fine tuning of the background image position.

The main feature of Display Fusion is to display wallpapers on multiple desktops. The user may display different wallpapers on each desktop or use one wallpaper that spans across all of them. Each computer monitor connected to the computer system is displayed in Display Fusion’s main interface.

The user can load wallpapers from his computer or Flickr and make them the default wallpaper for the computer monitor. Display Fusion Pro provides access to background image positioning which can be used to fine tune the location of the wallpaper on the monitor. It’s also possible to use one of the seven display modes that range from stretching the image to fitting the width or height while maintaining the aspect ratio of the image.

Users of Display Fusion Pro can enable wallpaper rotation in the same interface. They can either add a list of wallpapers from their computer or get their wallpapers directly from Flickr.

Images can be grabbed from Flickr users, groups or by searching for text. The wallpapers set will then be used to rotate the computer’s wallpaper in a time interval specified by the user. One interesting option is to freeze a wallpaper. This will stop the process of rotating wallpapers and make the current one the default wallpaper.

Display Fusion comes with window management features as well which have been specifically designed for multi-monitor systems. Windows can be easily moved between computer monitors including maximized windows. It is furthermore possible to position windows on the same computer monitor. It is for instance possible to center a window on the current monitor or to snap it to one of the monitor’s edges.

One main benefit of Display Fusion Pro is the ability to configure custom window sizing and moving hotkeys. Other interesting features include Window Snapping with the option to exclude applications from it or maximized window dragging between computer monitors.

The newest Beta of Display Fusion Pro enabled another long requested feature to the application. Users can enable a taskbar on every computer monitor. The feature is still beta but it already provides two possibilities for users. The first is to display a Display Fusion Taskbar on additional monitors that is showing all windows like the taskbar on the main computer monitor. The second option is to only display the windows that are open on each monitor.

Jon Tackabury is regularly updating his website Binary Fortress with new information about Display Fusion and other software projects.

Five licenses for Display Fusion Pro are up for grabs. Just reply in the comments and let us know that you want one.

Binary Fortress Software is best known for their wallpaper software Display Fusion but also home to some other interesting software products. One that has been added today is called Shockdraw and its more of a proof of concept application. The concept of accelerometer in notebooks is pretty new to me I have to admit, not even sure if my Toshiba notebook has one build in or not. Can’t remember seeing it in the product’s description.

The demonstration video at the Shockdraw website looks pretty interesting though especially if you consider that the application has a size of 48 Kilobytes which includes the source code.

Basically what needs to be done is to start the application and paint on the screen by tilting the notebook in a direction. Tilting it up for example would draw the line to the top while tilting it to the lower right corner would make it draw in that direction.

I suggest you take a look at the demonstration video to see how it works. And if anyone could let me know if an accelerometer is build into every notebook or only into special ones.

I only just discovered 360 Desktop, and unfortunately, before I could really adjust myself and get more productive, I also discovered dual monitors.

Frankly, the one makes the other irrelevant, although I would have been very, very impressed if 360 Desktop worked across two displays creating a huge scrolling desktop. In fact I hope its a feature they consider introducing.

"Give someone a second monitor, let them use it for while, and then try to take it away. It just isn’t going to happen.",

Suzanne Ross, Microsoft Research

I couldn’t agree more.

I had a quick Google and found Display Fusion, a awesome little application to customise your dual monitors, either by having different wallpapers on each, or by having one stretched across the two.

I favour the latter, as nothing looks better then a huge, high resolution image displayed like so. For some truly amazing dual monitor images try Mandolux and Digital Blasphemy.

After the initial buzz of using two monitors I also found myself getting annoyed with the fact you have to share one taskbar between the two.

The pretty self-explanatory Multi-Monitor Taskbar puts a taskbar on the second monitor and lets you have programs minimise to this instead of the one on the main display. gHacks has covered this before and this is where I found it.

As some people pointed out in the comments for that article, Ultramon is possibly a better alternative and a beta for Vista is available, but unfortunately its shareware, not freeware.

DisplayFusion 2 has just been released. The software can be used to manage multi-monitor systems with ease, the key areas are wallpapers and window management with a few extras thrown in. DisplayFusion 2 lets you easily set a wallpaper – either an image or solid color – for each monitor separately or one that spans across all monitors. Wallpapers can be set on timers to change after a certain amount of time has passed (pro version only) and the integrated Flickr search helps in finding new wallpapers. Images that are to large can be positioned to display the part of the image that the user wants.

Window management is all about controlling windows on multi-monitor systems. With DisplayFusion 2 users can drag maximized windows to another monitor screen, move (and maximize) windows automatically on the next screen, center and tile windows on the screen. It is even possible to maximize a window across all screens, very nice.

Most functions can be accessed by using hotkeys. The pro version offers fully customizable hotkeys. The video demonstration on the homepage gives a very good overview of the functions of DisplayFusion 2.

Windows does not handle Wallpapers for Dual Monitors very well. If you ever tried to use different wallpapers on each monitor or stretch a wallpaper across both you know what I mean. We – again – have to rely on third party softwares to add functionality to Windows.

Display Fusion can be used to manage dual monitors, or even triple or more, on Windows XP and Windows Vista. The basic option is to choose either a wallpaper for each monitor separately or choose an image or color that spans across all monitors. This is a function that should have been implemented in Windows Vista but I guess Microsoft had enough work to implement drm to Vista.

Another option of Display Fusion is the ability to choose that the wallpaper should fit the width or height but remain aspect ratio which is great if you want to use non-widescreen wallpapers on widescreen monitors for instance.

A bonus is the integration of Flickr which lets you search for and download wallpapers from the popular image portal.

Display Fusion integrates shortcuts nicely which add several functions that make it easier to work with dual monitors. Some hotkeys include the ability to move windows to the next monitor in line, stretch windows across all monitors and moving windows to the center of the current screen.
