One site that I discovered reading the Donation Coders Blog is called Desktopography and describes itself as an exhibition of natural designer wallpapers. There have been exhibitions in the last three years with a total of 75 beautiful wallpapers. All wallpapers can be downloaded from the site free of charge and most are offered in different sizes.

The site itself is pretty resource intensive and takes some time to load, even on my broadband connection. I suggest to turn of the music once you are there unless you really like the atmospheric sounds that play in the background.
