There are many situations where image thumbnails come in handy starting from blogging and publishing websites to PowerPoint presentations or preview images of a photo collection. Some programs and online scripts – like Wordpress for instance – create image thumbnails automatically whenever the user uploads an image to the web server. Some however do not have that option which means that the user has to create the thumbnails manually.

One interesting application for that purpose is RightThumb for the Windows operating system. It is a portable application that can be integrated into the Windows Explorer context menu to offer the option to create a thumbnail from selected images.

Several parameters of the thumbnail creation can be configured upon startup including the output format for the thumbnail image, the maximum dimension for the image, the quality of jpg images, compression of png images, the resample filter and if desired a prefix identifier for the image. The image will be automatically sharpened after resizing and it is possible to select a different output folder for the thumbnail image.

The program can be closed after the initial configuration and is from then on accessible from the Windows context menu if that option has been selected. Right Thumb (via Barry’s Computer Tips) is a free download for the windows operating system.

It supports a wide range of video formats including but not limited to the popular avi, wmv, mpg, rm, rmvb, flv and mov but also exotic formats like vob, 3gp and mkv. The only requirement is that an appropriate codec is installed on the system to play those files.

This can be checked easily by trying to play the video with Windows Media Player or any other media player that does not use binary codecs. Five output sets are available that define all sorts of parameters like the number of thumbnails per row, the background color and the width and / or height of the thumbnails.

Everything in there can be changed and there is much to explore including several options that I have not mentioned.

Several videos can be added to the program queue by either selecting a folder or files from the system. Two output settings exist. The first creates an image for every thumbnail while the second combines all thumbnails into an image.

movie thumbnails

The creation process itself is fast and works flawlessly as long as a supported codec is installed. I ran into a bit of problems with several video files because I use SMPlayer as my main video player which uses binary codecs that other applications cannot use. This meant that I received quite a few “failed” messages because of missing codecs.

Installing the codec would naturally resolve the problem.

While this method worked flawlessly it simply took to long to start GIMP and resize the image.

I therefor decided to look for an easier way to resize the images and I found it in the software Image Resizer. All I need to do now is to select all images that I want to be resized and click on ok to process them all. I did create a new image profile before to add the best fitting size for my website and saved that as the standard profile that will be used when resizing images.

Image Resizer offers several other functions that could be useful for some users. It is possible to choose the output file format, the output quality, the name of the newly created images, watermarks and if the new images should overwrite the original ones and where they should be saved if not.

I use GIMP for the purpose, definitely not the best choice because of the long loading times but good enough for the few that I have to create. Sometimes however I’m in the position to create thumbnails of hundreds of images and there is no way to create them with GIMP because it would take a very long time.

I tend to use a program that was developed just for the purpose of creating lots of thumbnails. The name of the software is EZThumbs and it can be freely downloaded from the developers homepage. The most important feature is of course batch processing which means that you can process hundreds of images at once and select how and where they should be saved on your system.

It is for instance possible to add a prefix or suffix to the thumbnail and save it in the same directory as the original images. All important image formats are supported and EZThumbs offers additional features like filters that might be interesting for some users.

I like it because it is not complicated at all and saves me a lot of work.
