You sometimes may need to copy the output of a command to the Windows Clipboard, for instance to use the output in another application. Most users that I know handle this either by sending the output to a file with the > filename.ext command or by frantically trying to figure out a way to select and copy the output contents in the command prompt window directly.

Both methods are not really straightforward and need more time than the process should take in first place. Thankfully though there is a way to copy command prompt outputs directly to the Windows Clipboard, it is only lesser known.

Open the command prompt as usual. You can open it with standard rights or elevated rights by right-clicking on the icon in the start menu and selecting to run it as an administrator.

Once there you can copy any output to the clipboard by appending | clip at the end of the command. A basic example is the dir command which outputs all folders and files of the current directory level directly in the command prompt. Please note that you won’t see the output anymore on the screen as it is redirected to the clipboard.

dir – output in the command prompt

dir > test.txt – output copied to the file test.txt in the same directory.

dir | clip – output copied to the clipboard

The directory command is only a basic example to demonstrate the effect of the | clip command. You can obviously use it for complex commands and outputs as well. Whenever you use the clip command everything that is part of the output is copied to the Windows clipboard.

Did you know about the clip output command? If not, how did you copy the command prompt output until now?

Clipboard Help+Spell, Powerful Windows Clipboard Manager

Software

Windows

clipboard

clipboard manager

donation-coder

windows software

windows-clipboard
<guid

One of the reasons for this is the limited nature of the default system clipboard feature which can only store one item at a time. This means a lot of juggling back and forth if you need to copy multiple items from one application to another. The Windows Clipboard does not support persistent clipboard items as well.

Clipboard Help+Spell is a Donation Coder application. This means that it is free for personal use and well designed. The program might intimidate inexperienced users as it offers a wealth of features and options.

The basics however remain the same. Windows users can still use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-c and Ctrl-v, or the right-click menu items, to copy and paste items to the clipboard. Clipboard Help+Spell remembers all items that get copied to the Clipboard, unlike the Windows Clipboard which flushes out the old entry once a new is stored.

The new shortcut Ctrl-Alt-q displays a selection menu to paste a previous clipboard entry into the current application.

The last items saved to the clipboard are displayed on top. But Clipboard Help+Spell does not stop there. Lets take a look at the other options of the menu.

Favorite Clips – It is possible to create permanent entries, like contact information, signature or a sentence that are often used.

Time / Date TextClips – Paste various time and date formats into the active application

Stack Operations – The stack system can be used to copy multiple items to one stack, to paste them at once after the copy operation into another application.

Formatting Presets – Change the text formatting, for instance dashes to tabs or trim line break.

All Clips – Displays all clipboard entries.

The main program window is customizable. It displays a tree structure on the left side, the selected contents on the right and a log at the bottom.

Here it is possible to modify specific clipboard entries. The entries can be modified manually which works the same way as in a plain text editor like Notepad. There are also options to spell check or change the format or case of the selected text.

New entries can be created in all available groups, for instance in the favorites which become then permanently available in the selection menu.

A search filter at the bottom can be used to find specific entries quickly. Other options include deleting clips or sending them to the printer.

Clipboard Help and Spell supports Virtual Folders. Two are configured by default with options to add custom ones to the mix. The program will automatically put all web addresses and images into those two virtual folders, completely independent from the actual clipboard entry.

This is great if you want to look-up an url quickly without going through all clipboard items to find it. Virtual folders tap right into the program database. The help file offers some configuration instructions.

The program ships with loads of options. From configuring different hotkeys to trigger the clipboard functionality over backup and maintenance to the layout and design of the Quick Paste menu.

Clipboard Help+Spell is a well designed clipboard manager for the Windows operating system. Interested users can download it from the program page over at the Donation Coder website. The software supports 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the operating system.

There is a video tutorial available which explains the basics and advanced features.

Old-Fashioned Program “Spartan” Helps Capitalize on the Clipboard

Software

Windows

clipboard

clipboard manager

portable software

spartan

windows software
<guid

Whether you need to go back and access an item from quite a bit ago, want to save clipboard items for later, or simply want to view access all your clipboard items from one screen, finding a program that helps you out might be fairly important. For those looking for such an option there is Spartan, a free program that has just recently been released to help organize your clipboard and streamline the copy and paste process.

To download, swing by this website and grab it, but be prepared: Spartan features an utterly antique install interface. Do not worry – it has absolutely nothing to do with the program itself. Just enjoy feeling like your running Windows 95 for a moment.

Starting up the program greets you with a blank matrix of cells with 25 yellow cells in the left column and 25 white on the right. As you start copying things you will find that they all seem to appear on the left. This area is the temporary clipboard, the one just like everyone has, albeit a slightly extended one.

Now before you do anything else you need to know that, by default, the program makes a really annoying dinging sound every time you add something to the clipboard. If you are ok with this then feel free to read forward, but if it drives you crazy go to Tools > Options (General) and find the little box that says Sound when new clips are captured. Uncheck that box or suffer from the most obnoxious dinging sound ever.

Go ahead and load a few items into Spartan simply by copying a bunch of sections of text or images. Nothing has changed here – do it just like you normally would. Once you have a selection of items to play with, experiment a bit to better understand how the program works. Spartan automatically saves anything you leave in the right column, making it available until you either tell it to forget it or you uninstall the program. You can see this by dragging one or two items into the right column, completely exiting the program, and then opening it back up. You may notice that it saved the items on the left as well – these stay intact until you replace them with new items, and Spartan drops off old items to make room for new ones once you have reached your limit of 25. Also notice that as you mouse over images in the Spartan matrix, previews of those images appear in a small window that disappears as you move your mouse away, allowing for quick and easy identification between similarly titled images.

When you actually want to use one of the objects further back in your clipboard simply leave the cursor where you want the item to appear and then click on the field containing that item in Spartan. It appears just as would a normal clipboard item and leaves you ready to go.

Some people will likely find the program too similar to the standard clipboard to find it worth the download. Others, however, will see value in the quirks provided through Spartan and will boost their productivity through it. If you are on the fence, you might just want to give it a try – it can be surprisingly helpful.

Spartan Lite is offered as a free and portable version. The commercial version of the clipboard manager can store more clipboard entries than the lite version, but that seems to be the only difference.

Climsy, Clipboard Image Uploading, Downloading Software

Software

Windows

clipboard

clipboard software

portable software

windows software
<guid

Climsy’s main features are monitoring the Windows clipboard for images that are copied to it and to process those images locally or remotely.

Here is where it can help you: It can save images that you have copied to the clipboard, for instance by right-clicking the image in Firefox and selecting copy image, to a local folder. The interesting thing is that it works browser and program independently. It works in Firefox, and continues to work if you switch to Chrome, Internet Explorer, your favorite feed reader, picture viewer or the Windows desktop. Climsy is compatible with all applications that offer to copy images to the clipboard, including the print key on the keyboard.

The Image Sharing preferences in the program settings determine how the copied images are processed. They can be copied to image hosting sites like ImageShack, to a folder on the user’s Dropbox storage or a custom local directory. This opens up some interesting options. It is for instance possible to use the tool to download or upload images effortlessly.

Another option is to upload the image directly to an Image host before posting it on a website, forum or another place on the Internet. Images do not necessarily need to originate from the Internet. It is possible to copy a local image to the clipboard which could then be stored on Dropbox or uploaded to the supported image hosting site. The url that is created at the image hosting website is automatically copied to the clipboard.

The settings list several additional preferences. It is for instance possible to select the preferred image type and compression rate, and whether notifications should be displayed when an image is copied to the clipboard.

Climsy Features

Available as a portable version and an installer

Can process local and remote images as long as they are copied to the clipboard

Can save images locally or send them to Dropbox or image hosting sites

Supports url shortener

Climsy offers interesting options for several user groups. This includes users who download images regularly from the Internet, users who want to upload images to the Internet, and users who want to save images directly to their Dropbox account.

Climsy is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Downloads are available at the project homepage over at <a

A history, and the ability to save multiple items would be a godsend for many users. For now, third party tools are the only option to add that functionality to the Windows operating system.

ClipCube is a lightweight portable clipboard manager for Windows that can store clipboard text for later usage. It basically saves all text clipboard entries and makes them available in its interface.

<a

A click on the program icon opens the program window showing all entries with the latest additions at the top of the application window.

The program goes back into hiding once another window is activated, a click on the “on top” icon in the header prevents this. Items stored in the program can be copied with the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-C after selecting them or by right-clicking and selecting the option from the context menu.

Internet addresses are recognized as well and it is possible to open the sites with a right-click and the selection of Go to Address. Timestamps are supported as well as grid lines and fixed width fonts for better readability.

Individual items or all items can be deleted either from the context menu in the program window, or the system tray right-click context menu. Here it is possible to delete all entries, select the retention of saved Clipboard items (indefinitely, until exit, for a week or month) and configure the program to launch on Windows startup.

<a

Unlike most operating system clipboards, Klippy gives the user quick and easy access to not just the last object copied, but multiple objects copied. Klipper is so powerful a clipboard tool, you will wonder why other operating systems don’t mimic the features and functionality. Klipper is also so powerful that most users won’t take advantage of it’s full range of features.

In this article I am going to introduce you to the Klipper tool contained within the KDE 4.5 desktop.

Version

You may be using an earlier version of KDE, so the version of Klipper that you have access to may not be the same. If this is the case, you may be missing some features or some actions might be a bit different. The version of Klipper shipping with KDE 4.5 is version 0.9.7. To find out what version of Klipper you are using Right click the Klipper icon in your notification area and then click Help > About Klipper.

Features

Multiple clipboard history entries.

Actions support.

Easy clipboard history clearing.

User-configurable keyboard shortcuts.

And much more.

Basic usage

The basic usage is simple: You can cut and post normally as you would with any operating system (using Ctrl-c/Ctrl-v or the UNIX method of highlighting text to copy and click the middle mouse button to paste) or you can open up the Klipper history window and select what you want to paste. Let’s take a look at the steps for the latter.

Figure 1

Click on the Klipper icon in the notification area.

From the resulting pop up (see Figure 1) select which text you want to copy (once you’ve selected it, it’s copied).

Paste the selected text into the document you want.

Once you have copied a string of text from Klipper, that text remains in the history. This allows you to retain text that can be copied multiple times. This is a nice feature when you know there is text you need to have quick access to for multiple copy/paste instances.

Kipper history size

Figure 2

You can determine the amount of entries Klipper holds. By default it will contain only seven items. If you are a frequent copy/paster, you might want to hold more than that. To configure this click the Klipper icon in the notification area and select Configure Klipper. In this new window (see Figure 2). In the Clipboard history size change that number to how many entries you want to hold. Once you have done that, click OK to save your settings.

Actions

Figure 3

This is where the real WOW factor comes in with Klipper. With Actions you can perform various actions on selected contents of your clipboard history. All you need to do is to enable the actions in the Klipper pop up menu (see Figure 1). Once you have done that actions will be enabled. Let’s see them at work.

After you have enabled Actions in Klipper, Open up the Dolphin file manager.

Locate an image file (such as a .jpg file) and right click the file.

Click the Copy entry.

From the resulting Actions menu (see Figure 3) select which action you want to take on the now copied and selected Klipper entry.

You can also create your own Klipper actions, but this will require an understanding of the Qt regular expressions (beyond the scope of this article).

Final thoughts

Klipper is an outstanding clipboard tool. Ctrl-C will copy data into the clipboard, and CTRL-V will paste it again. This works with text, media, files and any other kind of data. Even program specific data formats are supported by ShapeShifter.

The clipboard manager stores all data sets in the program database. To paste a specific set, the user would press CTRL-V for some time, which opens the selection menu. The biggest flaw in the eyes of most users is the inability to store more than one entry in the clipboard. So called clipboard managers are designed by third party developers to provide this and additional functionality. PasteCopy.net is but one of those Windows clipboard managers. It requires the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 as the name suggests but is otherwise portable and available in multiple languages.

The software program will monitor the Windows clipboard by default and memorize any contents that are copied by the user. Contents that have been copied are displayed in the program’s interface. The length of text and the type of the contents are displayed there with a handy preview feature to preview image or text right in the interface. Images can also be zoomed in case they had to be resized to fit in the interface.

The copied contents in the interface can be saved so that they are available after a restart of the program. That’s handy for entries that need to be copied frequently. The settings contain two handy options to convert rft and html text that is copied to the clipboard manager. These are disabled by default but can be activated so that these formats get converted automatically. Good for uses who do not want to include html or rtf formatting when pasting contents they previously copied.

Contents that are stored in the clipboard manager can either be pasted by left-clicking on them and using the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl V], right-clicking the mouse button and selecting Paste or dragging and dropping them from the PasteCopy interface into another application.

PasteCopy is a small Windows clipboard manager that offers some interesting features. An option to use keyboard shortcuts for pasting various clipboard entries would be a good addition to the program though. The software program is compatible with most Windows operating systems including Windows 7. It can be downloaded from the developer’s website.

Windows Clipboard Enhancer CCCCtrlC

Software

Windows

clipboard

windows software

windows-clipboard
<guid

The option to remember multiple clipboard entries is probably the most popular feature that is missing from all versions of the Windows operating system. CCCCtrlC is a lightweight Windows clipboard enhancer that changes this by offering the functionality to save up to five clipboard entries without interfering with the default clipboard program.

The software program runs quietly in the background and can only be seen in the task manager or by pressing keyboard shortcuts. The default Windows clipboard can still be used by pressing CTRL V to copy an item to the clipboard and CTRL C to copy it from the clipboard.

CCCCtrlC comes into play if the user presses the same keyboard shortcut for a longer period of time. It will then display a small clipboard selection screen in the lower right part of the computer screen (even if the Windows Taskbar is located elsewhere). The selection will display underscores and Cs. Each position stands for one clipboard entry where entries with an underscore are blank slots while those with a C are slots that are already filled with information.

Pressing and holding CTRL C will then cycle through the slots and save the information in the selected slot once the keys are released. Pressing and holding CTRL V on the other hand will cycle through all slots and paste the information of the active data field once the keys are released.

A few additional hotkeys are available. CTRL Insert X will erase all extended clipboard entries but keep the standard clipboard entry. CTRL CV will display the help file while CTRL Insert V will display a system tray icon that offers the options to suspend the hotkeys, pause the functionality of the software or to exit it.

CCCCtrlC uses less than four Megabytes of computer memory. It is available at the Donation Coders website.

CL1P is an Online Clipboard

Misc

Online Services

cl1p

clipboard

share-files
<guid

Or maybe you need to access a particular file from another computer. The easiest way to do this would be to use portable media like a flash drive. But what if that’s not an option? Then you have to find other means.

One way of accessing files is to use an online clipboard like CL1P. This website allows you to put up data using a unique url that you yourself choose. No sign-up or registration required.

Once the CL1P url is ready, you have plenty of options. The first thing you can do is set the clipboard to take plain or rich text formats. Alternatively, you could turn it into a messageboard. After that, you can either type in your data, or upload files and pictures. The maximum upload limit is 30 MB.

Once your clipboard is ready, simply save it. CL1P has the option of password protecting your page, which comes in handy if you want only select people to be able to view your link. CL1P pages stay active only for seven days which is a slight disadvantage if you want to keep your page around longer.

CL1P is fairly versatile. For example, a user can edit his clipboard if he wants to. Another plus point is the ability to print the clipboards. While this may not be helpful if you’ve uploaded something that cannot be printed, it’s worthwhile for text and images.

Are you comfortable with the idea of an internet clipboard? Would you use CL1P? Let me know in the comments.

Windows Clipboard Software

Software

Windows

arsclip

clipboard

clipboard software

windows clipboard manager

windows-clipboard
<guid

One of the best places to find tiny but useful applications is the ClipCopy is a portable software for the command line that can easily be used to copy output directly to the Windows clipboard. The easiest way to use the software is by appending it to the command issued. To copy the output with Clipcopy one would simply use the command
dir | clipcopy

The output size is not limited which means that it can copy large amounts of data to the Windows clipboard easily. The command will not echo the dir command in the command line. Clipcopy provides an option to do both. This is done by appending the
-e
parameter to the command. The full command would be
dir | clipcopy -e
for that.

Windows Clipboard Manager on review at Ghacks. Clipomatic was a memory efficient software that did the job just fine but was a little bit stuck in the last century which should not be that of a problem for a clipboard manager because the interface should not get in the way of the copy and pasting process anyway.

The xNeat Clipboard Manager comes with a shiny modern looking interface with neat looking rounded buttons but basically provides the same functionality than Clipomatic. It stores additional entries in the clipboard, the default value is ten just like the value that Clipomatic uses. This value can be changed in the program’s options which are available in the main interface.

The original functionality remains the same meaning that users can still copy and paste one item with the usual CTRL C and CTRL V shortcuts. The additional clipboard entries can be opened with CTRL Shift V which will open a small menu displaying the latest entries to the clipboard.

The user can use the arrow keys and enter to select on entry that should be pasted or use the mouse to select one. It is rather surprisingly that this Clipboard Manager is only using about 1.5 Megabytes of computer memory when the interface window is open and only 300 Kilobytes when it is minimized in the system tray.

Windows Clipboard

Software

Windows

clipboard

clipboard-replacement

clipomatic

windows-clipboard
<guid

By default the clipboard can store one phrase that a user copies into it. Once a new phrase gets copied the old phrase gets deleted in the clipboard to make room for the new one. Windows has several of those tiny little functions that have been there since Windows 95 which have basically never been changed since then.

Hopes are that Windows 7 will see a redesign of the Windows clipboard function just like the Windows Calculator will get his overhaul, too. Users who want to store more phrases in the Windows clipboard have to look at third party solutions and one of the best is Mike Lin’s Clipomatic.

Clipomatic adds a series of new features to the Windows clipboard without changing the whole process of storing and pasting complicated. It introduces a clipboard cache that can contain a number of phrases. The number is defined in the program’s option, by default it is 10 entries.

The entries are added as usual by marking text anywhere in Windows, for example in a browser window, email or word document, and either pressing the shortcut CTRL C or by right-clicking the phrase and selecting Copy from the menu.

The user can still paste the last phrase that he has added to the Windows clipboard by using the usual CTRL V command or selecting Paste from the right-click menu.

Pressing CTRL ALT V however opens the Clipomatic menu which provides access to the last ten phrases that have been added to the Windows clipboard. Those entries can be selected by pressing their corresponding button or by left-clicking them.

Clipomatic has another interesting feature. It provides access to permanent clipboard entries which can be added. This is useful for adding phrases that are used regularly, like names, email addresses or signatures.

The software program saves the clipboard entries whenever the user closes the application or logs out of Windows. These entries will be loaded during the next program start again.

Clipomatic uses a whooping 300 Kilobyte of computer memory and less than 2 Megabyte of virtual memory when in minimized state. This is a great Windows clipboard tool.

Clipboard Fusion

Operating Systems

Windows

clipboard

clipboard fusion

Software

windows-clipboard
<guid

A small popup appears in the right lower corner of the screen whenever you copy an image. the popup contains a thumbnail of the image and it is possible to save it from there directly without having to paste it into an image viewer or editor first.

<span

It stores only the last text string that you have copied and once you copy another one the previous one is not longer available. It happened more than once that I lost a text phrase that I still needed because I accidentally copied another item to the clipboard.

The Clipboard Caching utility CLCL is a small program for Windows that can store as many items that you copy as you want. The default value is 30 items but that figure can be changed in the options. CLCL stores everything that you throw at it, it does not really matter if you copy text or files, everything is stored in the clipboard.

The default keyboard shortcuts for copying (CTRL + C) and pasting (CTRL + V) remain untouched. The CLCL menu with all the stored items can be accessed by pressing ALT + C instead. (this can be changed in the options)

Plugins can be used to add functionality to CLCL. Some are available on the developers homepage, they convert upper to lower case for instance, quote, put tags around it or add support for additional formats.

Pretty much everything can be configured in the program’s options. Hotkeys can be changed and added and formats can be added and filtered.

Clipboard Caching is a excellent software with a low memory consumption.

Extend the Windows Clipboard

Operating Systems

Software

Windows

clipboard

clipboard-replacement
<guid

If you want to copy two different text phrases for instance you need to copy the first, paste it somewhere, copy the second and paste it as well. A tool that would save more than one record at a time would optimize the process considerably.

Clipdiary, which was mentioned at Tech Yard, is such a program. It stores all plain text and rich text phrases in the clipboard as well as images in the clipboard until you delete the entry in the clipboard or a set limit of stored entries is reached. That limit is set to 3000 but you can change it from 0 (unlimited) to a number of your choosing. I personally think that 3000 is way to high because it would take ages to find the correct phrase that you are looking for, some users might find it useful nevertheless.

CTRL + C and CTRL + V work the same way as before, if you press CTRL + V the last saved phrase or image gets pasted into the current text field. The new keyboard shortcut CTRL + D opens the program interface where older entries can be picked and pasted.

It would be nice if there would be an option to pick previous items per hotkey as well. Some shortcuts are shown in the options but those did not work for me. I have set the maximum amount of saved entries to 30. The clipboard can be a security risk if you save 3000 entries, think of passwords, urls and other personal data.

The Network Clipboard

Linux

Operating Systems

Software

Windows

clipboard

network

windows tips
<guid

The desktop PC is running Windows XP and I use the notebook with Windows Vista to test what I’m writing about. I do my research on the Windows XP PC however and find it convenient to use the clipboard across the network.

This means that I can do the research on my XP computer, copy a link to a website there and paste that link on the second computer to open the website in question. It does not stop here. The network clipboard works on Windows and Linux which means that you can share data between different operating systems as well.

Usage could not be easier. Simply select a network interface and port and you are ready to go and use it. Windows users might have to download the runtime files which are also available at Sourceforge before they can install the Network Clipboard.
