I’m pretty disappointed with the quality of movies that got released in 2007 and it looks like the trend is continuing into 2008. Of course taste differs and it could very well mean that you enjoyed a lot of movies that have been released in 2007.

This article is going to list the top 10 box office movies of 2007, the top movies 2007 at IMDB and the movies 2007 that got an academy award or another awards.

Why would that diversity be important? Movies that make money are not necessarily good movies. Maybe they had fantastic advertisement or hype surrounding them. Just look at I AM Legend. Was that a good movie ? It still did very well money wise.

Awards and ratings on the other hand might give better indications if a movie is good or not.

Top grossing movies 2007:

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Spider-Man 3

Shrek the Third

Transformers

Ratatouille

I Am Legend

The Simpsons Movie

National Treasure: Book of Secrets Disney

300

Top rated movies 2007:

No Country for Old Men 8.4

There Will Be Blood 8.3

Into the Wild 8.2

The Bourne Ultimatum 8.2

Ratatouille 8.2

Scaphandre et le papillon, Le 8.1

Tropa de Elite 8.0

Movies 2007 with awards:

Atonement

Away From Her

I’m Not There

Juno

La Vie en Rose

Michael Clayton

No Country for Old Men

Sweeney Todd

The Counterfeiters

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The Lives of Others

There Will Be Blood

This Is England

I have seen three of the top grossing movies 2007 in cinemas and although they provided a nice viewing experiencing they did not provide that special feeling, when you see a movie and know that this one is special. That happened when viewing the Star Wars movies, the original ones in cinema. That opening melody is all it takes. In case you are asking. I viewed Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers and 300 in cinema.

Did you recently purchase a DVD in store ? If so you must have noticed this wonderful reminder at the beginning that can’t be skipped that downloading pirated films is stealing and a crime. I recently bought 24 season 4 on DVD which comes on seven DVDs and contains all the 24 episodes of this season.

Guess how many times I had to see this announcement ? Seven Times ! Yes that’s right. They put it on all DVDs. I was not able to skip it and that is why I’m writing this article about it. Let me ask you another question. Tell me how many times users who download 24 season 4 from the Internet are seeing this message ? Zero Times ! Yes that is right. If you pirate the tv series you get a clean copy without that nice Piracy reminder that people who BUY the DVD get.

Am I the only one who thinks something is seriously out of line here ? It’s like those game copy protections that do more harm than good. Buyers have to live with the copy protection even though it could mean that the game won’t play on their computer but guys who download it ? They get a crack and can run it without DVD at all.

Let’s talk about DRM in music. Do you think that the majority of songs in Peer to Peer networks has DRM ? The stance of the Music Industry is thankfully changing on this matter and I really hope that the Movie and Gaming Industry will make the changes as well.

If I purchase a DVD I do not want to see ads against Piracy. This is insane. The same is happening in cinemas all over the country. You see anti-piracy ads in cinema. Are they going to try to convince the one guy that might sit in one of the cinemas with his cam to stop making a recording the movie ?

One could say that they try to sensitize the public but do they have to do that in front of people who actually purchased a product ? Why don’t they do tv commercials instead ? That would probably be more effective and buyers would not feel so irritated with all the anti-piracy ads in their purchased products.

The title of the video is Human Joysticks (NewsBreaker Live interactive cinema game) which describes exactly what this is all about. Take some motion sensing cameras, a breakout video game, a big screen and an enthusiastic crowd and you are about to witness the funniest breakout game of all times.

They show some of the action and several opinions of participants which all sound pretty enthusiastic. I really think that this could be a great idea if it does not mean that you have to wait and watch the advertisement and play the game before the movie. They are probably trying to bridge the time before the advertisements start. What do you think ?

I do not like Quicktime that much. I hate to use additional clients next to VLC to be able to view certain movies on websites. I also do not like the fact that you can’t save movies easily if you do not use Quicktime Pro. I discovered a method that makes it possible to save movies from the Apple Trailer website to your local drive and watch them in your favorite movie player afterwards. I use VLC for this purpose but Quicktime Alternative for instance should be fine as well.

I’m going to explain the method using an example. I’m really looking forward to seeing the movie 300 which will come out in march. A new trailer for that movie was released a few days ago and I want to download it to my computer to be able to watch it again without re-downloading it. The first step would be to visit the apple movie trailers website.

Click on the link to the movie 300. The main page of the movie shows up where you can select the resolution of the trailer that you want to view. Right-click and select view page source. Find either 480, 720 or 1080. Skip the first and copy the second url that you find.

480 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_480p.mov
720 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_720p.mov
1080 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_1080p.mov

Add the letter h before the resolution, it would like this

480 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_h480p.mov
720 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_h720p.mov
1080 – http://images.apple.com/movies/wb/300/300-tlr1_h1080p.mov

This is the direct link to the movie. You could use a download manager to download it or save the page once the movie has been completely loaded.

I watched the movie Crank last Saturday in a cinema near my hometown, it was a great movie but something that happened before the film really annoyed the hell out of me. Why the hell are they showing clips that it is illegal to record the movie with cams and that you will face jail time for it before the movie starts ? How likely is it that someone who has the intention to record the movie is actually in there ? How much more likely is it that many visitors who paid lots of money to watch the movie are pretty annoyed by this message ?

And don’t you think that the one who has the intention to record the movie does not care about this warning ? I pay money to watch the movie, not to see some crap that makes no sense at all. Another example, a friend recently bought a movie on DVD of a major label – again clips that say how evil piracy is and that it is illegal to copy the movie. He actually bought the movie and has to watch this ? You can’t even forward to the next chapter.

What the industry currently is doing is to criminalize their customers. Can’t they see that this has one major effect ? Customers are getting annoyed by this. If I buy something I don’t want to be reminded that piracy is evil – I want to watch or hear the media i bought – that is all.

Let us head over to DRM and see what they do there to make the live of their customers as miserable as possible. I don’t want to reheat the discussion about Sony’s attempt to plant rootkits in their customers computers to prevent them from copying the music; and I don’t want to talk about all those customers who get sued by the RIAA because an IP address was sharing music with another which could be traced back to the user. We all heard about RIAA suing the dead for instance, does not look like a fool proof system to me.

Let’s say you bought some tunes from Apples iTunes store, or another store that uses DRM. It works fine, you are able to burn the songs on CD. Some years later you decided to buy the now top notch item from Microsoft which does not support Apples format. What would you do ? Buy all songs again and hope that this time the next player you buy will support the format of the new songs ? Will you illegaly remove the DRM to be able to listen to songs that you purchased ?

Some decades ago live was easier, you had records, you had tapes and later on compact discs. Nowadays you have a variety of competing systems which are incompatible to each other and make the customers life a living hell. In former times you could purchase music and was sure that it would run on devices that came out later in time. Today you can’t be sure about that.

Windows Vista has the ability to lock out users who missed to activate the system in 30 days. Microsoft plans only to make the users life miserable instead, surf for one hour only, no email checking and other functions simply don’t work after 30 days. This might help their sales but this surely has another effect that they probably did not think about. Users will either migrate to systems that do not impose such power over the user or become very annoyed by this measures.

Will all of this stop the commercial pirates ? No it won’t. Commercial pirates have the tools to make copies of movies and music even though the industry adds DRM and other measures to them.

So, who will is affected by this ? Right, you and me. The normal customer. Let me quite a nice analogy:

What could have been said is that DRM is like a toaster that only toasts Pepperidge Farm bread. You’ll pay full price for both the toaster and the bread, but they’ll sick the FBI on you if you figure out a way to toast a Thomas’ brand english muffin in the thing.

Here is a short list of things that you can do to show the industry that we, the users, are in power..

don’t use services that sell DRM infested files, use services without drm instead.

switch to an operating system where you have control, not the company who sells it

don’t buy CD’s in retail stores that are copy protected

let your congressman know what you want

let your friends and family know about this and convince them to join the cause

More ? Other suggestions ? Let me know. Oh, one last thing, support EFF, they are doing a tremendous job.

That’s pretty lucky that aliens with advanced technology still use some old mac from earth to power their shields. You find more of those stories at living the geek life, its a recommended read for everyone who is in for a good laugh.
