Most users seem to be disturbed about the partnership between Bittorrent and the MPAA which started in fall 2005 with the agreement that illegal searches would be removed from its own Bittorrent search engine. The fear that the cooperation will affect the development of the popular uTorrent client seems to grow with every passing day.

“Following the acquisition, patented content delivery innovations made by BitTorrent, Inc. will be integrated in the µTorrent client in a manner that will remain seamless to the community of users. Ultimately, the integration of best-of-breed BitTorrent technology will result in an improved client and an enhanced user experience. It will also accelerate BitTorrent’s plans to provide high-performance content delivery services that power websites seeking the most efficient platform for distributing large, high-quality files. Lastly, the incorporation of µTorrent’s lightweight codebase strengthens the adoption of BitTorrent technology in embedded systems, including televisions, mobile phones and other non-PC platforms.”

Utorrent on the other hand does not seem to be the only bittorent client which seems to be affliated with the content industry. There are at least rumors that Azureus was sending stats of your sessions over the network as well. And finally a photo appeared on uTorrent another try and switch from my favorite client Bitcomet to it. It seemed to me lately that Bitcomet was using more system resources than it was expected to use which is the main reason for the switch. Others are that the torrent community frowns upon Bitcomet naming it bandwidth stealer.

Migrating torrents into uTorrent is a pretty simply procedure. Before you can load them into uTorrent you have to make sure that all extensions that have been added by Bitcomet, or any other client, are removed. Bitcomet for instance adds .bt! at the end of every file if you have selected it in the options. This could be a tedious task if you have many small files that you want to download.

I found a dos batch file in the uTorrent migration guide that is helpful in this case.

Open Notepad and write this line into it (replace “bc!” with which ever file extension you need to remove):
@for /r %%i in (*.bc!) do @move “%%~fi” “%%~dpni”

In Notepad, File > Save As: RENAME.BAT

Open the location folder for the partially downloaded files you need to rename.

Drag and drop the RENAME.BAT file into this folder

Right click on RENAME.BAT > Open; a DOS window will briefly appear as it scrolls through all the files in the folder as they are getting renamed.

I decided to use the same download dir in uTorrent that I have used in Bitcomet. To change the download location click on Options, Preferences and select Downloads from the menu. Select the directory where your files are currently located in the field Put new Downloads in to make sure that uTorrent finds the partially downloaded files.
After the preparations are finished we have to load the torrents into uTorrent. Bitcomet has a subdirectory named Torrents in its program directory. The torrents are located there by default. Open uTorrent, click on File, Add Torrent and browse to the location where your torrent files are stored.

You can select multiple files at once. The torrents are automatically loaded into uTorrent and you should see the Done % go up if you already downloaded part of it with Bitcomet.

And that’s it. You successfully migrated from Bitcomet to uTorrent.

BitComet 0.80 has been released

Operating Systems

Tools

Windows

azureus

bitcomet

bittorrent

freeware

torrent

utorrent
<guid

I have written about Azureus and uTorrent which I have tried both but not about the client that I’m personally using because I think it is the best one of the bunch. I like BitComet because of several reasons: speed, usability and because it is using low resources.

I do know that uTorrent qualifies for those reasons as well but I encountered an error at the time I was using uTorrent which had no fix and I therefor had to make a change. BitComet has a clean interface which uses a split screen to display the information. The left side contains the navigation with entries such as Downloading and Downloaded and links to some torrent websites as well. I have never used those links but it could be useful for some.

The right pane displays the files that you are currently downloading or seeding with typical information like size, speed and time. It would be a good idea to visit the options before you start using BitComet, you find them in Options > Preferences.

If you know what you are doing you should tweak your connection settings and change the default download location. BitComet has a CPU usage of about 2-3% even when I’m downloading many big files at once. Ram usage stays between 50-60 all the time, less if you download smaller files.
