Auto Shutdown is an add-on for the Firefox 3 web browser that adds the option to automatically shutdown the computer after downloads finish. It is generally not advised to use the Firefox download manager to download large files as it does not play well with download problems like interrupted downloads. Third party download managers like Down Them all for Firefox are generally a better choice for downloading large or multiple files in the web browser.

That’s probably the main reason why Auto Shutdown supports the Down Them All Firefox add-on. The Auto Shutdown add-on places an icon in the Firefox status bar that will automatically try to configure the shutdown on the first left-click for the operating system that it detects. This left-click enables the auto shutdown feature which can be easily disabled again with another left-click.

The add-on could be very handy in situations where a large download will finish at a time where the user is not near the computer system. This would mean – without the add-on – to either stop the download or keep the computer running until the return. Main features of Auto Shutdown are:

Executing user scripts after all downloads are finished or computer is idle for specific time

Play sound after each/All downloads are finished

Restore Firefox from last session

Customizable shutdown/idle scripts

Supporting DownThemAll

Auto Shutdown can be downloaded from the Mozilla Firefox website.

If you are one of those guys who love to use their PC or laptop to listen to music or watching a movie before they fall asleep in their bed you might appreciate a software that is smart enough to find out that the user is asleep and that performs an automatic shutdown afterwards. Smart Shutdown is that software program.

Smart Shutdown does not look like much after installation and users judging its tiny interface might be disappointed at first glance. This disappointed will surely change to sheer joy after finding out that it offers functionality that would put many applications to shame.

The basic functionality is to perform an action after a certain time of inactivity on the user’s part. The default setting is to turn off the computer after 30 minutes of inactivity. The interval and the action can be changed in the same menu. Instead of turning off the computer the user could be logged off, the Internet connection be disconnected or a message reminder send.

Then there is the option to perform an action at a specific time or after some time has passed independently from the activity level of the computer. This provides even more options like shutting down network computers.

The list of network computers that will be automatically shutdown can be configured in the options. The administrator can define a message that will be displayed on the network computer and the time that the message will be displayed. Network computers can be shutdown or rebooted this way. Lists of computers can be saved and loaded at a later time which is excellent for remote shutdowns.

And then there are the global options. The user can select to shutdown the system fast, empty the recycle bin, force the system to close all open tasks, configure settings for each user individually and confgiure left and right-click shortcuts that perform certain actions.

Smart Shutdown can be configured to be run from the command line which would make it possible to create a shortcut for an automatic shutdown of Windows.
