Probably the biggest selling point of the program is the integration of multiple online music databases. This includes the popular services MusicBrainz, Discogs and Amazon, and a few others.

You can load individual files or complete directories into the program after startup. Both options become available with a click on the File menu. The program sorts the music by album name automatically after you have made your initial selection. The menu on the lower left side of the screen offers directory browsing options, ideal for switching quickly between music directories.

A click on any album or song displays the file and tag information on the right side of the interface. Here it is possible to manually edit the format or individual tags. Format patterns are available to make quick changes to individual file or folder names.

You can also tap into the supported music databases, that option is available under the File menu in the menubar.

Just select one of the available services. A search form is displayed automatically after the selection. Both the artist’s name and the album name are filled out automatically. You only need to click on find to search the database.

A red background color indicates data that is not matching with a particular file, which can be a great help if the look-up returned multiple album versions. The import options are very powerful, and support for multiple online databases increases the chance that specific albums can be found in one of the supported databases.

You can also right click on any individual file in the interface and use the available context menu options from there. This ranges from searching for an album or song cover on Google Images over playing the file to searching for lyrics or the album or song on Amazon.

The program’s Tools menu contains additional options that some users may want to utilize.

It is possible to convert ID3 tags, add a numbering system to the selected tracks, rename the album directory or apply filename or tag formats.

Kid3 is a powerful audio tag editor. It has a few usability issues here and there but the overall product is of high quality and regularly updated. Users who are interested in taking Kid3 for a test ride can download the latest version for their operating system from the developer project website over at Sourceforge.

A wizard is displayed on the first start of the program, which offers links to a few quick program tutorials, recent files and often used options.

Here it is for instance possible to create a new audio file, start a recording, load audio from a CD or use the built in text to speech module.

The main menu displays additional options, among them modules to download and convert Youtube videos to audio, importing audio from video and burning music to CD.

The Youtube downloader did not work properly when tested, every other module in the program did however.

The audio editor supports a wide variety of formats, including all popular music formats with the exception of Flac, and many video formats including the popular formats avi, flv and mpg.

All of those formats can either be loaded directly in the program or converted / extracted so that the audio becomes available. Free Audio Editor can furthermore record directly from any audio device connected to the computer.

Audio that has been loaded or recorded is shown in the main interface, with playback and editing options.

Editing includes lots of interesting features like modulation, filters, noise reduction, a whole palette of effects and more. It is even possible to switch from waveform mode to spectral mode, perform a frequency analysis, and to bookmark specific regions of an audio file for later usage.

Free Audio Editor has its quirks though, namely the broken Youtube downloads and the necessity to load audio files that have been extracted before.

Still, the program offers a lot to users who like to edit audio files. It is no replacement for professional audio software, but excellent for beginners and intermediate users.

The program is available for download at the developer site. Pay attention to the installation process, it includes a page with a toolbar offer that is selected by default. Make sure you uncheck that if you do not want the toolbar to be installed. The program is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system.

That is when so called cue splitters come into play. A cue splitter basically uses the information provided in the cue file to split the large mp3 file into corresponding single tracks. Medieval Cue Splitter is one program that can be used for this task. The free software pretty much does all the work. At best all the user has to do is to load a cue file into the application and press on the Split button to start the process.

The Cue Splitter does provide several advanced options like picking the right naming format for the mp3 files that are created. The default naming convention is (track number) [artist] song title, for instance (01) [Ash] Lose Control.mp3. This can be changed easily in the options to something without brackets and spaces.
