FlashOffliner is a starter and central management application for flash games that have been downloaded to the computer. The software program ships with a few example flash games that can be used to check the program’s functionality but it requires that the user knows how to download flash games from various web games portals.

While that is not that difficulty it could be a problem for inexperienced users. Flash games can usually be found in the browser’s Internet cache. There are also many programs and browser plugins that can download them right away.

Once the flash games are stored on the computer system’s hard drive they can be added to FlashOffliner. A click on Create New FlashOffliner Package opens a windows that might confuse some users at the beginning.

The whole process of adding web games to FlashOffliner can be broken down into two steps. The user picks a swf files in step one from his hard drive that he wants to add and selects a destination for that file in the second step. It is a good idea to store all web games in the same folder to be able to keep an overview of the games.

Once a web game has been converted into the FlashOffliner format it has to be added to the application. This is done by clicking on the Install FlashOffliner Package link. The user simply has to pick the file that he just converted from his hard drive.

Every game that has been added this way can then be started from the system tray. One interesting feature is the option to set the game size. Available sizes range from 400×300 to fullscreen.

The advantage of using FlashOffliner over executing the flash games separately is twofold. The application provides easier access to the games from the Windows system tray. It also offers the option to set the window size of the web game.

Back then when I started writing articles for ghacks I was writing about a freeware game that blew my mind. The game was called Mono and had such an addictive fascinating gameplay that I played it for endless hours. The creators of Mono developed a new game which is called Echoes that uses many of the addicting elements that made Mono famous. Echoes is an Asteroids clone on steroids. That is probably the best way to explain the basic principle of the game. The developers put it that way when they describe Echoes: “Yeah, it’s a bit like Asteroids hyperactive, drug crazed brother displayed in blur-o-vision© and viewed through psychedelic sunglasses in a cheap nightclub.”

Echoes is freeware of course and has a size of about 8 megabytes packed. You can run it from any location. Once started you move your spaceship with the mouse and use the ASDW keys to point the gun in one of the four directions available. The first waves of asteroids are no problem and some leave power ups behind that replenish shields and add guns to the spaceship.

Echoes is probably not as addictive as Mono – nothing beats Mono, you know – but it comes pretty close. It has nice visuals, a good smooth gameplay and action that changes and gets faster with every asteroid that gets destroyed. Take a look, you will enjoy it.

Tails Gear is one of those Japanese arcade shooters that make it pretty difficulty for average gamers to see more of the game than just a few levels. If you ever played games like Ikaruga you know what I mean, they live of extreme amounts of enemies and bullets that they send your way and you have to move the ship more than carefully to avoid death. Graphics are excellent as is the gameplay, you always see some kind of sequences when you finish a level and move on to the next. One of the interesting features of the game are the satellites of your ship that shoot on their own and can stay in a place for tactical reasons.

Tails Gear works fine with a gamepad but can be played as well using the keyboard. You shoot with Z and C and use a secondary weapon with X. If you are new to this type of games I suggest you start with the easy setting and experience the game on this stage before moving on to normal or hard.

Hard is by the way very intense and you really need a calm hand to succeed in this mode. There are so many bullets and lasers on the screen that it becomes nearly impossible to dodge them all without crashing your spaceship. Tals Gear is a great game for a quick pause of some minutes, very easy to learn but difficulty to master. Exactly the types of game that I like.

The game does not need to be installed and can be run from any location on your hard drive. The download is about 10 megabytes which is acceptable for this type of game.

Green Beret, Wings of Fury and Ghouls and Ghosts – if those names ring a bell you have come to the right place. Everyone else join us as we delve into a time where some of the greatest games of all time were produced. The motto of the 2006 Retro Remakes competition is “Good remakes of good games that anyone can play, regardless of their ability”. I think this is indeed a great opportunity for old folks like us to enjoy those games we played when we were young once again and for young folks to play games that they probably never heard about before.

Without further ado I’m going to present the games that I enjoyed the most from that competition. All games are free to download and play without registration hassles. Have a nice time and let me know if you found another one that is worth mentioning or if you enjoyed one tremendously.

Froggy Ribbit

Do you remember the game Frogger ? It was developed by Konami and made its debut in the arcades in 1981. It was ported to many systems including my first video game system the Atari 2600. Sega created a unoffical sequel called Ribbit which explains why the game is called Froggy Ribbit.

The task of this game is pretty simply. You are a frog starting at the bottom of the screen who wants to reach his home which happens to be at the top of the screen. A motorway with nasty cars and a river with floating wood are the main obstacles that need to be crossed to reach your home safely. You do loose a life if you are hit by a car or drop in the water. The ultimate goal was to occupy all five homes with your frogs.

Montezumas Revenge

You are Panama Joe, an adventurer who wants to stay alive and find as many jewels as he can find in a labyrinth of the Aztec emperor Montezuma. The goal of the game is to reach the last room of the labyrinth, the treasure chamber which holds the treasure of the emperor Monetezuma himself.

Montezumas Revenge is a plattform game that has its fair share of jumping, puzzle solving and treasure hunting. It was a great success when it first came out.

The Goonies 20th anniversary

Whenever a successful movie hit the cinemas a game was shortly after produced to use the effect of the popularity of the movie name. Many times the games were bad, real bad but sometimes games would come out that would stick out and would be fun to play.

The Goonies was developed by Konami once again and it involved five stages of jump and run action. After each stage a keyword was given to the player which could be used to continue the game from that stage on.

Wings of Fury (J.e.r.!)

Wings of Fury is a game set in the Pacific during World War II. You are a US pilot onboard an aircraft carrier of the US Navy. Your task is to defeat the Japanese war machinery by bombarding bunkers, turrets, battleships and soldiers on the ground.

The machine is equipped with torpedos, rockets, bombs and a machinegun which had to be replenished on the carrier. The player also had to take care of the fuel of his plane. Wings of Fury was a violent game at this time and created some controversy.

Ghostbusters

Again a game that was produced because of the highly successful movie. It was not the usual arcade game that most movie adaptions would become but a game that had some nice twists. You had to buy equipment like traps or upgrades for your vehicle with the money that had been earned from catching ghosts.

Ghosts would try and reach the temple of Zuul and the player had to stop those ghosts before they would reach the temple. If a ghost would reach the temple the psycho kinetic energy level would rise and if it would reach 9999 the game would be over.

Green Beret

Green Beret, also known as Rush’n Attack was a side scrolling arcade game developed by Konami. The player takes on the role of a member of the United States Elite Force trying to infiltrate an enemy military base to destroy the enemy’s secret weapon.

Throughout most of the game the player is only using his knife to defeat the enemy masses and finds the occasional power up – handguns, grenades, bazookas – which aid him in his quest to destroy the weapon.

Ghouls and Ghosts

Ghouls and Ghosts is one of those game series that exist for a long time but still make a appearance in remakes of the original game. You control the knight Arthur whose task is to restore souls, including the one of this bride, by defeating Lucifer himself.

Arthur may find different types of weapons while he advances in the six levels to finally meet his adversary. Great game and graphics.

Star Wars

The dream of every Star Wars fan came true with the release of the original Star Wars game. Be Luke Skywalker, defeat T-Fighters, attack the Death Star itself and finally destroy it by flying the same path that Luke did in the first episode of Star Wars.

I’m not sure about the original game which the coder used to make this remake, if you know please let me know. If you are a Star Wars fan this remake has been made for you, enjoy it while you can.

Implausible Mission

Another visitor. Stay awhile… staaaaay FOREVER! This line spoken by the evil professor Atombender was one reason why Impossible Mission became such a successful game.
The interesting part is that you do not shoot the other spaceships directly but use the gravity field of your spaceship to redirect the missiles and hit the enemies with them. The numbers that spawn become more and more after time and it becomes increasingly difficulty to avoid the attacks of the other vessels.

We all know and love those stickman animations that started to show up some years ago. There have been some incredibly works of art and I bet that many watchers thought that it would be really cool to play a stick man game instead of just watch the animation. Their prayers have been heard: This weeks game for the weekend is called Fight man and is a game like Double Dragon, only with stickman.

Fight Man is a flash game, you can play it in your browser. You may modify controls before it starts or jump right into the action if you like. Default keys are Z for boxing, X for jumping and C for a roundhouse kick that gets rid of the nearest opponents to catch you breath. Use the cursor keys for moving your char around.

The bad boys are of course in an advantage, you always face four or five of them all the time and some enter the stage with weapons like sticks. It’s fun to play and well made for a flash game, if you have some spare time check it out.
