They can use the start menu for that, shortcuts on the desktop, start the program from its program directory or the command line, or pin programs to the taskbar if they use Windows 7. And then there are keyboard launchers which put program starts at the user’s fingertips.

The application launcher Qatapult has been developed for this year’s Donation Coder Nany challenge. You can start using the program right after you have downloaded and unpacked it on your system. The program displays a small overlay window on the screen that you can use to type in the first letters of the application that you want to launch.

The top matching application and the most likely action are displayed in the program interface once you start typing the first letters of the application name.

A tap on the enter key loads the program on the system. It is alternatively possible to press tab to switch to the list of available actions for the active application (and use shift-tab to switch back). Available actions are taken directly from the program’s context menu. They usually include opening the application, opening the properties window, deleting the application or using the run as command to run the application with different privileges.

The keyboard launcher seems to take program information from the Windows start menu. You can use it to start applications but not documents or other files, at least not directly.

The only option to launch files from within the program’s interface is to enter a path in the launcher window. The folders and files under that structure are then displayed by the program, with options to select and launch files this way.

You can also use the built-in email to action if you configure a mail server in the program options. You can even authorize the program to fetch your Gmail contacts for some fast email sending action.

The program window stays on top all the time. You need to use the shortcut Shift-Space to hide it on the system. The same shortcut can also be used to bring it back to the front.

Windows users looking for a fast great looking keyboard launcher that is actively developed can download the latest version of the software <a

They can use desktop shortcuts or the Windows start menu, and Windows 7 users can use the taskbar on top of that (the quick launch bar offered similar features on previous versions).

Sometimes though that’s not fast enough. That’s where application launchers like Launchy, Jump To or QuickPop come into play.

Stardock Tiles offers a slightly different approach to app management. The free version of the program adds a sidebar to the Windows desktop that is set to be always on top by default. The sidebar displays two different application listings by default; first open applications that are currently running on the system, and the user defined applications that are blank by default and fully customizable.

It is furthermore possible to enable a third listing displaying recently opened documents in the sidebar. A click on the title bar at the top of the sidebar switches between the enabled listings.

A click on a program brings the application window to the front. Documents are loaded automatically in the default application. A right-click on the sidebar and the selection of Configure Stardock Tiles opens the program’s configuration menu.

Here it is then possible to enable or disable sidebar pages, change appearance settings and other options.

Each page comes with its own customization options:

Only show windows from a list of applications

Show all windows in any state

Show all minimized windows

Show all non-minimized windows

Show all applications that have been recently opened (Windows 7 only)

Show all recent documents

The size and location configuration menu controls where and when the bar is displayed on the screen. This includes changing the size of the bar, the position of the bar (on the left or right), and options to hide the bar automatically.

The options and appearance pages finally display additional configuration options, from enabling support for multi-touch gestures to grouping same process windows together. It could pay off to look through all options to customize the application manager further.

It may not much sense on first glance to display open program windows in the sidebar, considering that they are also displayed in the taskbar. Users who have disabled the taskbar on the other hand may benefit from Stardock Tiles. The ability to display recent documents and programs may speed up the workflow further.

I personally think that the program is missing options to quickly switch between page listings. A keyboard shortcut and keyboard navigation options would be quite useful.

Windows users can download Stardock Tiles from the official program website. The software is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system.

SliderDock is a Stylish Application Dock for your Desktop

Software

Windows

application-launcher

dock

windows software
<guid

Desktop customization is easy with Windows 7 and many users enjoy personalizing as much as they possibly can. You can fill up your Toolbar with icons and have the ordinary look or you could use other application dock software with a more flashy appeal. SliderDock has a unique user interface that is shaped like a floating ring on the desktop. You rotate the ring of applications using the mouse wheel and double-click the right icon to launch the desired application. This one truly stands out and can be customized and adjusted several different ways.

Download SliderDock from this link: http://sliderdock.wikidot.com/start

SliderDock features animation quality and high resolution icons. You can customize the backgrounds for the icons, alter their size, and change the size and location of the ring easily. Install from the following link and read the instructions carefully before installing. One thing that is very important if you are running a 64-bit system is that you do not install SliderDock in the default location of Program Files(x86). Instead, you will need to change the destination folder to Program Files during installation as seen in the
image below. For a 32-bit system, you can use the default location.

After you initially install SliderDock, there will be only a few icons in the ring. To add application icons, drag and drop the icons to the SliderDock icon which looks like this:

This icon is rather important, as it is the point from which you access the right-click context menu and the settings. Select “Dock settings” from the context menu that pops up when you right-click the icon.

The Dock settings allow you to customize General settings, Appearance, Controls, Shortcut Keys, and Shading effects. Click the tabs one by one from top to bottom and read the options on each page. It is all self-explanatory for the average user. If you play with the different appearance settings for awhile, you will find the right look that you are going for with your particular personalized desktop.

With the Appearance tab, you can choose different background images for your icons. The ones that will look the best depend on your desktop background. If you use rotating backgrounds from a slideshow, perhaps the “white square” icon backgrounds will be the most appropriate. If you use a solid color background, just about any of the choices look good. Here are four examples of the icon backgrounds available.

There is also a SliderDock tutorial icon in the ring by default that links to a site describing everything you need to know about using SliderDock. There is far more to the subject than can be described in this article. This just gives you a quick look at some of the features and appearances. If you do choose to try it out and you want to use the tutorial, click the icon that looks like this:

It looks like an Internet Explorer icon, but the “e” is a darker blue and the ring around it is a rainbow ring rather than a solid color. Additional customizations described in the tutorial provide instructions on how you can change icon images to make icons like this easier to find. Have fun customizing!

QuickPop, Lightweight Application Launcher

Software

Windows

application-launcher

portable software

program launcher

quickpop

windows software
<guid

Some on the other hand are not pinned there. This includes the image editor Paint.net, the text editor Notepad++ or the Bittorrent client uTorrent among others. I’m not pinning those applications because I either do not run them that often, or run them in context, for instance by right-clicking on a file.

Another reason is that space is limited on the taskbar, and that I do not want to many icons listed there by default as it could make the display more messy than it should be.

Users who are in the same boat, but would like a selection of apps at their fingertips, could take a look at the free QuickPop software for Windows. QuickPop is a free portable application launcher that displays all available applications by holding down Ctrl and pressing the middle mouse button.

The program creates a shortcuts folder in the program directory on first startup. Users need to add their programs as shortcuts to that directory or subdirectories. With the help of subdirectories, it is possible to create a distinct structure to organize tools and programs in different folders.

Shortcuts can for instance be dragged from the start menu into the folder, or from another program directory. Sometimes shortcuts need to be created first which can be done with a right-click on the program executable and the selection of Create Shortcut from the context menu in Windows Explorer.

Programs that are listed in the application launcher menu can be started with a left-click. The window of the program launcher closes automatically once a selection has been made.

QuickPop’s greatest weakness is the somewhat complicated method of adding and removing programs to the program interface. The program itself is lightweight and very responsive.

Windows users can download the latest program version from the developer website. The program is supplied in a 32-bit and 64-bit edition.

Quick Cliq, Windows Application Launcher, Productivity Tool

Software

Windows

application-launcher

context menu

portable software

quick cliq

windows software
<guid

The application adds a programmable menu to the system that can be launched with the mouse gesture or a hotkey.

The hotkey Windows-Z or holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse down will open a customizable context menu on the screen. Files, folders, email addresses, website addresses and system tools can be added easily to that context menu to open the tools and locations faster than usually.

The context menu needs to be configured on first run. This is done from the context menu itself or the system tray icon.

The context menu consists of items which link to one of the elements described above, submenus to sort specific items into groups and separators to further distinguish between items.

The menu supports drag and drop so that items can be sorted with the mouse after they have been created. Items are defined by selecting one from the menu and then a type from the choose type pulldown menu.

It is basically possible to add any number of file links, websites, emails, applications and folders to the context menu to open these items faster. System tools range from control panel items to system folders, utilities, Internet Explorer features such as deleting cookies or history to so called actions which can clear the clipboard, lock the screen, shut down windows or turn Aero on or off.

The program extends the Windows Clipboard automatically so that nine entries can be saved instead of just one. The context menu contains a folder with advanced editing features for saved items.

The feature list in detail:

* Easy and quick access to folders, files, programs, links, e-mail templates, and command line operations
* Run an unlimited number of shortcuts with one item!
* Unlimited number of shortcuts and menus available that are fully customizable
* Access to Open/Save dialogs and fast folder switching in explorer
* 9 extra clipboards – with advanced editing functions (See below)
* Hide and show windows
* Memos that hold commonly used text and can be sent to an active window or placed on the clipboard
* Customizable Hot keys and Mouse Gestures for each feature
* Special shortcut type which will allow you to navigate a directory in a menu
* Drag & drop interface and Windows Explorer context menu integration lets you add any shortcut with just few clicks
* Save any menu you have created as an S-Menu file that you can run outside of Quick Cliq
* A Recent menu that will log recently closed folders so that you can access them quickly
* Ability to turn off any feature/option you don’t currently need

The Clipboard Features
* The clipboards can hold binary data (files/folders) as well as application specific data
* View and Edit any clipboard in it’s native format or plain text
* Append data to any clipboard making it a useful list making tool
* Basic text formatting
* Clean all formatting from the clipboard leaving only plain text (remove HTML formatting)
* Convert copied files to their full file path
* Save the clipboard’s content to a file

The portable application uses a surprisingly low amount of system resources while running. The working set was around 5 Megabytes of RAM on our 64-bit Windows test system.

Quick Cliq is <a

Phrase Express back then allowed the user to define abbreviations which would be automatically expanded in supported programs like Microsoft Office products or Internet Explorer. The program offered automatic spell correction in select applications as well.

More than three years have passed since this initial review and a lot has changed in that time. Phrase Express 8 is still available as a (limited) free version that offers the following functionality:

Organize frequently used text snippets.

Expand abbreviations as you type.

Launch programs with text shortcuts.

Auto-complete repetitive phrases.

Quick access to the Windows Clipboard History.

Correct spelling mistakes in any applications

Phrase Express users will notice the changes right away. Especially the new system-wide spelling correction and new TypoLearn feature need some explanation.

Phrase Express 8 can correct spelling mistakes in all applications on the computer system. The spelling correction in previous versions was limited to select programs.

Even better is the new TypoLearn feature which will automatically detect common typos of the user. The module learns from the corrections and will add the typo and correction to its database to offer the use the corrected item right away when a typo is made.

Another interesting feature is the ability to launch applications from within any text field. Applications are added to the list of supported programs with a right-click and the selection of Open With Phrase Express. They are from that moment on available for text launching

Phrase Express can import existing Microsoft Word AutoCorrect entries so that they can be used in any program, not just in Microsoft Office applications.

<img

This little gem isn’t a full-blown desktop the likes of GNOME, KDE, or Xfce4, but you will be surprised how well this ICCM-Compliant window manager will work for you. It’s lightweight, powerful, flexible, and has some nifty, old-school Linux goodness.

One such bit of nifty, old-school Linux goodness is the Wharf. This tool was actually ported over from one of my old-school favorites AfterStep. What this tool does is house a application launchers, modules, action buttons, and the Linux pager. In this article we’ll examine how to invoke, use, and configure this handy module.

Installation

Fortunately, the Wharf will install along with the Fvwm installation. So there isn’t any need to bother with installation. You also do not start the Wharf from the command line. Instead you have to do that from within the Fvwm menu. Let’s take a look and see how.

Starting the Wharf

Figure 1

Sine the Wharf is a module within Fvwm, you have to start if from the Fvwm module menu. To do this left-click on the desktop to bring up the desktop root menu and click Fvwm Modules > Wharf. This action will place the Wharf on the bottom left of your desktop (see Figure 1). What you see in figure one is a somewhat default Fvwm Wharf. I have actually re-configured the File Manager button to illustrated that the Wharf can, in fact use icons for launchers. In fact, in this instance, I have configured it to use Thunar. I can label that “Thunar” should I choose (more on that in a moment).

The larger buttons on the Wharf are used for launching applications, whereas the square of smaller buttons is used to invoke various actions on windows. These actions include:

* Move

* Resize

* Minimize

* Maximize

* Shade

* Stick

* Kill

* Info

The next row down are the xload and xclock modules. Finally, below that, is the Linux pager. Now let’s take a look at customization.

Configuration

The configuration of the Wharf is handled by the ~/.fvwm/modules file. The first section to check is the BarButtons section. This is where you configure your launchers. A sample BarButton line will look like:

*BarButtons (1×2, Title editor, Icon lemacs.xpm, Action ‘Exec exec nedit’)

Now, let’s make that a bit more useful for our installation (or at least my installation). My editor of choice is Nano which is a text-based editor. Let’s say I want to open the simple xterm window automatically with the Nano editor open. Plus I want to use an icon in the Wharf instead of just text. That new entry would look like:

*BarButtons (1×2 Title Nano, Icon /usr/share/pixmaps/mousepad.png, Action ‘Exec exec xterm nano’)

If you save that configuration file (after making the changes) and then restart Fvwm you will see the new launcher in the Wharf appear.

ButtonBar

I doubt you will want to try to change any of the buttons on the ButtonBar. What you might want to do is change the icon used for each button. By default the images aren’t there. In fact, if you do a search for any of the images you will come up blank. To use an image you will need to find fairly small icons. When you locate icons that will work you can configure them in the same file you used to configure the launchers (~/.fvwm/modules). Locate the section containing the list of *BarButtons and you will be right where you need to be. You can re-configure the icons and even re-arrange their order should you like. There is only a pre-determined set of actions that can be used for the ButtonBar. But if you’re really looking to have more launchers on your Wharf you could change out the Action for Exec and use the ButtonBar to launch more applications (or tools).

Final thoughts

If you are using the Fvwm window manager you owe it to yourself to get to know the Wharf. This is a tool that will make your Fvwm life much richer and much more efficient. Although the configuration of the tool is done via manually editing a configuration file, the time you spend will be time well spent.

Cache My Work Launches Apps Again After System Restarts

Software

Windows

application-launcher

cache my work

session management

sessions

windows software
<guid

These web browsers can be configured to display the very same websites that were displayed before closing the web browser in the previous browsing session. A similar option for the Windows operating system is not available by default. That is where the Cache My Work software programs steps in.

The program will display a list of programs on startup that can be restarted in the next Windows session. All the user needs to do is to place a checkmark next to any program that should be started again on the next Windows startup.

The program makes use of the run once key in the Windows Registry to launch these applications again. What this means is that while the programs will be launched the last session in the applications will not unless the application itself support sessions. This means that it is possible to launch a web browser like Firefox with the tabs open that have been open during the last session. Applications like Notepad, Adobe Photoshop or Word on the other hand will be launched with blank screens instead.

Cache My Work can also remember the open Windows Explorer windows to recreate them on the next start of the operating system. The program is intuitive to use and should not pose any problems even to inexperienced users. Interested users can download the program <a

For many it is just the cool look and feel of this 3D-like launcher that actually brings them to OS X. Now if you’ve used a recent release of GNOME you can probably see how the GNOME team have tried, in some ways, to bring a bit of OS X to the Linux desktop. Now there is a dock application called Avant Window Navigator, that finishes the process.

The Avant Window Navigator is a dock-like bar that rests at the bottom of your desktop that launches applications, holds applets, serves as a window-list, and more. Avant is very easy to install, takes up little to no resources, and is simple to manage. Let’s take a look at installing and setting up this nifty tool.

Getting and installing

Fortunately Avant will be found in your distribution’s repositories. So all you have to do is fire up Synaptic (or your favorite Add/Remove Software utility) and add it. There are a few packages you will want to search for and add (many of these will be auto-selected when you select the main Avant package):

python-awn

avant-window-navigator-data

awn-manager

libawn-extras0

libawn0

avant-window-navigator

python-awnlib

awn-applets-c-extra

awn-applets-c-core

awn-applets-python-extras

python-awn-extras

awn-applets-python-core

It’s a long list but it will give you everything you need. There will be one or two extra dependencies, depending upon your installation, but when the installation is complete you will have everything you need for Avant.

So do a search for “avant” (no quotes) and mark the above for Installation. Click Apply to run the installation. When the install finishes you are ready to start Avant.

Starting Avant

Figure 1

If you are using the GNOME desktop you might want to get rid of the panel on the lower edge of your desktop. What I did was move anything that I use to the upper panel and then delete the lower panel. Now, go to the Applications menu, click the Accessories sub-menu, and then select the Avant Window Navigator entry. This will start up Avant which will appear at the bottom of your desktop (see Figure 1). As you can see (in Figure 1), this dock acts very much like the OS X doc. When you open an application a small icon will appear where you can de-iconify a window. In the image shown I have opened a few applications. These have all be opened from the GNOME Applications menu. But can you add icons directly to the Avant dock so you don’t have to rely on the GNOME menu? Yes. And it’s much like adding any launcher to any bar.

Adding launchers

Figure 2

If you have no windows open, by default, your Avant Window Navigator will only have one icon – the AWN Manager. That is where you do all of the configuration for the dock. In that window (see Figure 2) click on the Launchers “tab”. You will see (in Figure 2) I have already created a couple of launchers for my dock. To do this click the Add button which will open up a small window. In this window you need to configure four pieces of data:

Name: The name of the application

Description: The description of the application.

Command: The command to launch the application. NOTE: Command must be in the users $PATH.

Icon: An icon for the application.

When you choose an icon for the application, the icon must be in a directory the user has permission to use. For example: Google Chrome installs into the /opt directory so any of the application icons are not usable by AWN. To get around that copy the icon you want to use to a directory your user has access too (for example ~/Pictures).

After you fill out the information click the OK button and icon will appear on AWN.

There are a lot of other possible configurations for the Avant Window Manager (all of which are within the AWN Manager). Play around with them to discover the perfect setup for your desktop. One particular configuration option you might want to take care of is in the General “tab”. If you want Avant to start up automatically check that box in the General tab and Avant will start when your desktop starts.

Final thoughts

The Avant Window Navigator is a fine addition to the Linux desktop. If you like the OS X doc you are certain to enjoy AWN. Install this dock, configure it, and see if you can eventually remove the remaining GNOME panels.

Control Pad Turns The Numeric Keypad Into A Command Launcher

Software

Windows

application-launcher

command launcher

control pad

file launcher

launcher

numeric keypad

portable software

windows software
<guid

The software basically works by assigning actions like opening programs, websites or files to key combinations which can then be executed by pressing and holding the * key on the numeric keypad (laptop users can enable laptop mode to have the same effect when pressing F12). This will open a command bar that can be used to enter the key combinations that have been defined previously.

Everything that can be launched from the Windows Run dialog can also be launched with Control Pad.

New key combinations can be added easily to the program by pressing the * key, entering chars, pressing the / key and typing in the file or website that should be launched when pressing the key combination.

Commands can also be directly edited in the commands.ini file which is usually faster if multiple commands are added. Special commands can also be assigned to key combinations. This is best done by clicking on the bracket icon after pressing / in the key creation process. Here it is possible to control media, change the volume of the sound, add browser functions like going back and forward and configuring keyboard shortcuts. The program can also initiate mouse clicks which might be interesting for some purposes.

It is even possible to combine commands with the + parameter. A user could for example launch multiple programs or websites with a single command.

Options are available to change the time it takes to display and auto close the command interface. Several aspects of the interface can be modified including colors, fonts, dimensions and opacity.

Laptop mode switches moves the keys from the numeric keypad to the F10-F12 keys. F12 will launch the input box, F11 will close it and F10 will add a new command after entering the code in the input box.

Control Pad is a versatile command launcher that can be handled with one hand. They start their favorite applications using shortcuts, the start menu or an application launcher. But no matter which way they choose they always have to perform the action several times until all applications are started. We handed out lots of popular applications in the last 16 days thanks to our sponsors who donated their software products for the good cause. We got readers with new Kaspersky Internet Security, Bitdefender or Cyberlink packages. Today’s application is Direct Access, a speed typing application that can help tremendously in day to day activities on the computer.

Speed Typing is but one of the aspects of Direct Access, it is more of a workflow optimizer. At its core is the ability to identify commands that are entered by the user. This can be Microsoft Office 2007, Firefox or Notepad. Direct Access displays an overlay when a command gets recognized to provide a visual signal to the user. The command could then be executed by the user by pressing the associated hotkey.

Here are some examples: You can use Direct Access to create text abbreviations. To write Best Regards you could simply type br and hit the confirmation key which will automatically expand the text. Other possibilities include automatic spell checking as it is possible to define commands that do not a confirmation.

Text manipulation is but one of the possibilities that Direct Access offers. It can also be used to launch applications or websites. It is for example possible to launch an email client, Wikipedia or Skype with short commands that can be initiated anywhere. Commands are recognized anywhere, they just have to be typed on the keyboard. To make it clearer, no text input form is needed to write and start commands.

<img

Just type calc and press shift afterwards anywhere. Want to display the Network Places in Windows? Type netw and shift to load that interface. Want to start the email client Thunderbird? Type tb and hit shift to load the email client.

Direct Access comes with a set of default commands that can be imported easily to help the user understand the software program. These default commands add all kinds of commands to the software. All examples given above are included in the default command set.

Before we explore the custom command creation we would like to let you know that you can download additional command packages from the website. This includes an html and control panel command set but also auto corrections for various languages like Spanish, German or French.

One of the main ways to increase the workflow is the custom command creation. It is possible to edit a default command in case you want to change the way the command is launched. Commands use various parameters depending on their purpose.

Auto-correction commands require only four parameters while application commands make use of seven. There are four types of commands that can be added to the software program: Autotext, Launch Application, Open Website and Send e-Mail.

To create a new auto-correction command one would simply add the correct phrase, the mistyped phrase and a description. Applications on the other hand require additional work. You need to specify the path, window style, abbreviation, option parameters and run in commands and if you want to use a confirmation key.

Direct Access makes use of a few shortcuts to streamline the process. Shortcuts are available to add the current application, the last executed command or to create a new autotext.

You can further optimize commands with the use of macros. Think of macros as advanced commands that do more than the execution of just one software program. Some examples include positioning the cursor after executing a command, inserting special characters or clipboard contents or nesting commands. The excellent online documentation explains all concepts extensively.

Direct Access increases the workflow almost instantly. The default command set that can be imported makes for a good start but the real strength is the ability to add custom commands that suite the needs of the user in front of the computer monitor.

The software program requires the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 and is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

You can win one of eight licenses that have been donated by Andrea Nagar, the software developer. Just leave a comment and let us know how you would use this software.

Launch Applications With The Mouse

Software

Windows

application-launcher

hot corners

Open Source

program

software program

windows software

Hot Corners is a relative small Open Source application for Windows operating systems. It was written in the Auto It language which means that some virus scanners detect it as a virus although it is not. The basic application of the software program is to launch functions, programs or services by moving the mouse around.

The software program provides two basic options. The first is to start services or applications by moving the mouse into one of the four corners of the computer monitor. Options like running a software program, locking the computer or handling windows. One action for every corner can be defined. It does work however best for the corners that are not occupied by the Taskbar especially if the taskbar is set to auto-hide.

The second option is to add the same set of functions to mouse movements. Only this time it can be activated by pressing the [Windows X] key while moving the mouse to the left, right, up or down.

<span

The only real advantage is the global keyboard shortcut [Windows R] which opens it. It can then be used to run known applications or Windows services without having to navigate the Start Menu or hard drive. It does offer a Browse button which can be used to browse to the executable that should be started.

Advanced Run takes the default Run dialog to the next level by providing access to several additional functions and features. It does that in the most convenient way by replacing it with its own interface and keeping the shortcuts. The first difference is the “Run as different user” option which makes it possible to run a selected application as a different user.

That’s an interesting way to load applications with a higher or lower user level or simply as a different user. It features three so called security profiles in addition to run an application with specific privileges which can be defined in the program’s option. By default the security profiles anti-spyware, maximum permitted and maximum prohibited are available with the option to create additional ones.

<span

These can be stored in the database of known shortcuts which is editable as well. The list contains many of the known shortcuts like cmd to open the command line or services.msc to open Windows Services Management. It is possible to change or add commands for each shortcut to speed up the start.

Shell Verbs are supported and a list of all available shell verbs can be viewed in the main menu. A shell verb is a command like open or print followed by a path to a file.

The last option that is of importance to companies or users with multiple computers is the import and export function. The settings could be exported after configuring Advanced Run on one computer and imported on additional computers.

Key Launch Application Launcher

Software

Windows

application-launcher

key launch

launch applications

launchy

program starter

starter

windows software
<guid

Application launchers speed up working with the operating system but require a period of vocational adjustment before the user can utilize their full potential.

The software program is driven by the global hotkey [CTRL SPACE] that opens the run box of the application launcher. Entering a char will show the first five hits in the container below and provide the means to scroll through the rest if there are more than five results.

Besides launching applications and files Key Launch can initiate Internet searches, open bookmarks, start Control Panel items, create a new email message, manage computer shutdown commands or open Internet addresses.

<span

Key Launch is compatible to Windows Vista which Launchy is not according to the information on the Launchy homepage. Launchy on the other hand is Open Source and available for Linux which Key Launch is not.

Another advantage of Launchy is that users have created plugins and skins for the application launcher while Key Launch stands on its own as of now. Computer memory usage is similar for both application launchers with Launchy using a few additional Megabytes while running.

Software Applications Launcher 8start

Software

Windows

application-launcher

applications

note taking

program starter

windows software
<guid

Users have lots of choice from relying on program shortcuts and the Windows Startmenu to keyboard launchers like Launchy to interfaces like 8start. 8start is a software applications launcher and note taking application in one. It comes with several interfaces and provides lots of possibilities to customize the interface like setting the transparency level of the software program.

The software program uses groups that can contain links to files, folders or web resources. Each group can be designed differently. The web resources could for instance display only the link text while the software applications display only the icon of the software. Icons and text can be combined as well and there are numerous ways to alter the appearance of practically any item in a group.

8start makes use of so called categories which can contain a number of groups each. Categories can be flipped like pages which means it is possible to create a smaller interface that is making use of pages to contain the same amount of information than a larger interface.

<span

It can be used to quickly access a drive. Each item displayed, be it application, web resource, folder or partition can be loaded with a single left-click of the computer mouse.

The note taking application uses a tree structure for the note taking. The main interface contains the keywords which when left-clicked will open a bigger Word-like document that can contain text and pictures that can be formatted using basic word processing controls.

A keyboard shortcut can be configured to bring the 8start interface up when needed so that it does not have to be visible on the desktop all the time.

8start is a sophisticated software applications launcher that is compatible to all Windows NT operating systems from Windows 2000 to Windows Vista.

Circle Dock

Software

Windows

application-launcher

circle dock

start-menu

windows-vista

windows-xp

Donation Coder Programming Challenge. It was an entry by Eric Wong who contributed not only this but another software program to the Challenge. Circle Dock is a program launcher, but not your usual stationary one. It is activated with a shortcut, the default one is CTRL Windows, and appears always with the mouse as its center.

This provides fast access to all programs, files, folders and applications that are accessible in the dock. The icons can shape as a circle or spiral around the center. The Circle Dock is placed on top of every other open window and remains on top even if another window is activated.

New items can be simply placed in the circle by dragging and dropping them into the center. They appear in the next free place of the circle. If no free space is available a new bigger circle is created where the icon will be placed. Icons can be moved around to place the most used applications near the center for easier access.

The mouse wheel rotates the icons in the circle and a left-click loads the selected application. The program comes with more than 20 skins that provide different shapes. It’s pretty amazing how flexible that program is. You can add/remove application titles, backgrounds, increase or decrease fonts and sizes of pretty much everything so that the dock suits your needs in the end and blends perfectly with the rest of the desktop.

I’d like to mention a few interesting functions. Circle Dock is portable and Open Source. That in combination with the option to synchronize the dock with files that are located in a specified folder makes up for an interesting USB application launcher. This is also great in networks where every computer should have access to the same shortcuts. Circle Dock is also compatible with multi-monitor systems.

The software program requires Windows XP or Windows Vista in either the 32-bit or 64-bit version and the Microsoft .net Framework 3.5. The only thing that is lowering my enthusiasm for the application is the memory usage of 30 Megabytes of memory and virtual memory which is a lot for such an application.

Orbit provides a circle based menu for Windows

Software

Windows

application-launcher

circle menu

middle-mouse

orbit
<guid

Right, every menu entry is the same distance away from the mouse pointer. It looks nicer as well but that’s just a cosmetic difference.

Orbit (discovered at the Donation Coder forum)provides a circle menu to Windows that should not be confused with the right-click menu. A middle-mouse click opens the circle menu with the five items Internet, Applications, Windows Explorer, Tasks and Configuration. Some of the items contain another circle that displays applications. The tasks item for example displays all open windows in a second circle while the Internet circle lists the three default items Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger and Outlook Express in its second circle. Those default items can be removed if they are not used or installed on the system.

New items can be added by right-clicking on a circle. If you wanted to add Firefox to the Internet circle you would right-click that circle and select New Item from the menu. The program requires a link to a file, folder or website and an icon that goes along with it. Hint: I have been using the icon search engine Icon Look to find icons for the additions which can be dragged and dropped into the configuration dialog.

Optional information like parameters can be added to some items (e.g. programs) that are added. The initial configuration takes some time, mainly to add commonly used applications, files and even bookmarks to Orbit.

What I personally like is that the middle-mouse circle menu is accessible everywhere. Most applications, like Firefox, Thunderbird or Opera use their own right-click menu which means that this is not accessible when one of those programs is open. The Orbit middle-mouse menu works fine everywhere. I have not tested it in full screen games though which is probably the only type of applications where it is blocked.

Launchy 2.0

Operating Systems

Software

Windows

application-launcher

launchy

windows software

updated to version 2 yesterday and I think that this is an appropriate moment to see what has changed since my first review of Launchy which dates way back. First time users of Launchy who happen to not read the instructions might be a bit puzzled at first because even though Launchy is started after installing it it is not visible on the system.

It becomes visible if you press ALT + SPACE and old users will immediately spot the new look and feel of the software. It finally supports Windows Vista and Firefox unicode bookmarks to mention only two of the new features.

So, what can you do with it ? First of all, you can launch applications with Launchy 2 which is the main purpose of the program. Just type in the first few chars of an application and hit enter once the software is displayed that you want to start. As a basic example, to start Spider Solitaire you simply enter Spid and launchy displays Spider Solitaire on the right side of its interface.

That’s usually much quicker than clicking on Start > Programs and finding the folder of the application that you want to start. It even beats clicking on shortcuts on the desktop if you get used to it.

Instead of opening and hiding Launchy 2 users can now opt to make it stay on top and at the same time change the transparency level of the bar. I prefer the old fashioned keyboard shortcut whenever I need Launchy but some users could very well integrate it into their system.

Launchy can open bookmarks in your favorite browser as well and use shortcuts to search in Google and other websites. A Google search for instance would have the following commands. Type Google, hit TAB and enter your search string plus return at the end.
Your default browser opens showing the search results for that query. Best of all ? You can add your own search queries to Launchy with ease.

Thanks to Download Squad for letting me know about the update.

Forget the Windows Start Menu Use Toolbox instead.

Operating Systems

Tools

Windows

application-launcher

freeware

start-menu

system

toolbox
<guid

It always takes some clicks to reach the destination – be it a program, the control panel or a drive that is connected to your computer. Toolbox was designed as a application launcher that makes it easier to access drives, folders and applications in Windows. It uses an intuitive way to display toolboxes that contain links to everything that you can think off. You can link to drives and display their size, launch applications with one click and open folders with another. Access to those elements can’t be faster in Windows.

The best thing is that you customize the toolboxes anyway you want. Add icons, make the toolbox transparent, let it remain always on top, use background images and much more to make it look the way you want it. I’m using it to display all of my drives and their free space in the left corner of my desktop. Clicking on a drive opens the root folder of that drive and displays the contents.

Toolbox is free and does not need to be installed at all. Just unpack it into a folder of your choice and run it from there. You can create two toolboxes that use predefined elements using the Wizard. One creates a toolbox with all of your drives and the other one with all your personal folders.
