Animated gifs are largely a thing of the past. They do not play an important role anymore in today’s web design but are still popular in forums and other message boards. GifSoup is an online service that is offering to convert a Youtube video into an animated gif. All it takes is to paste a Youtube video url in the form at the website. The service will then automatically download the Youtube video.

A preview of the video with the option to select a starting and end time for the animated gif are presented to the user afterwards. The service currently offeres to create animated gifs that have a maximum size of 10 seconds. It is up to the user to select the starting and end time for the animated gif there.

A preview of the selected time frame is available after making the selection. This makes it easier to correct the start or end of the video if necessary. A click on the finish button will save the video on the Gif Soup website. The user then has the opportunity to download the animated gif in different sizes to the local computer system or use the code to embed it into websites directly. A watermark with the url of the service will always be displayed in the lower right corner of the video.

Users who prefer more configuration options and an animated gif without a watermark can use image editors like Gimp or Adobe Photoshop to do the same. They offer more options but are more complicated to use. GifSoup offers an easy way to create animated gifs from Youtube videos in no time.

If you are an animated gif type, someone who likes to spend time on MySpace for example, then you might like to create your own animated gifs. One of the easiest applications for this purpose is the animated gif maker Mov2Gif by Dario Volaric. The very basic software program provides functions to extract frames from Apple Quicktime files to create an animated gif from the selected frames.

The animated gif maker is able to load Quicktime movies of any size. It displays the movies in its interface with the option to navigate frame by frame. The option to play the movie is missing in the application but that’s not that problematic. It is possible to draw a rectangle on the screen to pick part of the screen that should be turned into an animated gif.

The user can use a slider or the frame by frame navigation to grab frames of the movie. The process is unfortunately complicated as there is no way to grab multiple frames at once which means that it is necessary to click on the Grab button for every frame that should be added to the animated gif.

The means to pick a frame range would add much comfort to the software program. Once all frames have been selected the Save button will save the animated gif on the computer system. The top bar provides access to two options that allow to change the size of the animated gif and the display mode. The size has to be entered in pixels, for example 80×60 or 400×300.

Mov2Gif is easy to use and everyone should be able to create animated gifs with ease. It could use some comfort but this will probably only bother users who create animated gifs with it regularly.

Animated gifs have a bad reputation on the Internet which stems from the early days. There was a time back then when the Internet was new that animated gifs were considered a wonderful addition to many websites. Those blinking irritating websites died off long ago with only some remaining but usually abandoned by their webmasters.

There are many applications out there that can turn images into animated gifs. One of those applications is Gifted Motion. The Java application runs on Linux, Windows and Macintosh operating systems. It can create animated gifs from png, jpg, gif or bmp images.

The whole process is split up into three parts. Images are loaded into the application in the first part. The second part orders those images by adjusting the frames. Once that has been done a new animated gif will be created in step 3 and saved on the computer.

The animated gif editor is completely portable. It requires Java to be installed on the computer system which is the only requirement of the program.

Animated Gifs are mostly a phenomenon of the past and one only comes occasionally upon a website that makes excessive use of them. Those are either websites that have been laid to rest for a very long time by their owner, forums where users post all kinds of images or social community websites like Myspace.

Some make great forum avatars on the other hand. I remember one that showed a bug crawling around that looked so real that I tried to get it off my monitor the first time I saw it.

Anyway, if you are into animated gifs you might like Gickr.com which offers a service to convert Youtube videos into animated gifs. All online with minimal user input. I have created one from videos that I found at Youtube, you see it below.

The user can make a few decisions about the final size and the amount of frames of the animated gif. The size can be 50, 100, 120 and 200 pixels in width and the frames 5, 15, 25 and 45. The conversion takes only a minute or so depending on the video that you want to convert. There is unfortunately no option to select a time period that should be converted.

Animated gif files are a great way to get your profile pic or avatar to really stand out from the rest of the crowd. I’ve seen software that will make gifs for you but Noah has figured out a method to create animated gifs from a video clip using two of the most popular open source programs, Mplayer and Gimp. Noah’s method is primarily written for the Linux user but it works fine on Windows as well.

Before I give Noah’s method, I’d like to mention that there is a way to create animated gifs directly with MPlayer. However, the resultant gif file can sometimes be very strange-looking so it’s not very reliable. Anyway, once you figure out what video clip to use, let’s begin. Fire up MPlayer and switch to command-line operation. Then type in the following command:

mplayer -ao null -loop 0 -ss 0:11:22 -endpos 5 file.avi

This command allows you to preview what your final gif will look like. In this instance, I’ve selected a 5 second clip and looped it so it keeps repeating. If you’re satisfied with the clip, proceed to the next step.

mplayer -ao null -ss 0:11:22 -endpos 5 file.avi -vo jpeg:outdir=gifmovie

This command tells MPlayer to export your 5-second clip as a series of jpeg images to the specified folder, which in this case is ‘gifmovie’. After this step, MPlayer’s work is done and it’s time to switch to Gimp. This is where you convert the jpeg files into your gif.

Open the first jpeg image in your directory using Gimp. Then, open the rest of the images in the folder as layers (File > Open as layer). Now, all you have to do is save the file as a gif (File > Save As). In the resultant dialog box, check the ‘save as animation’ and ‘loop forever’ options. Then, click on ‘Export’ and your animated gif is ready.

You need to play around a bit with the options in Gimp if you want to add fancy effects and things like that. I tried this out and I was quite happy with my gif file. It requires a bit of practice but once you have a basic idea of where things are, it’s a breeze. Have you ever tried making an animated gif file? What program did you use? What do you think of Noah’s method?

There are two types of clones of successful website concepts on the web. The first copies the concept and publishes a similar website under a different name, the second copies part of the name and the concept over to another area. Giftube is trying the latter by being the ‘Youtube’ for Gifs, that is small animated graphics.

If you are one of those hanging out on forums and places like Myspace that seem to drown in animated gifs you might want to give Giftube a try to find new graphics to impress, or terrorize, others with. The website offers several categories and ways to sort and display animated gifs.

Four categories (funny, famous, sport and cartoon) wait to be explored. The search is tag based and the usual popular and recent sections make it even easier to spot what is new or popular at the moment.

Clicking on the “Show Adult” button reveals lots of hardcore animated gifs, not sure where someone would want to use those though. All animated gifs can be embedded into websites, as you can see below.
