Many Firefox settings can only be changed in the about:config dialog that appears when you type the phrase in the Firefox address bar. The settings in there however have rather cryptic names and it can sometimes be quite hard to figure out what they do, actually not that hard because every setting is explained on the Mozilla website. Still, it takes some time to look them up.

Configuration Mania is a Firefox add-on that displays many of those “deeper” settings in a menu that resembles the Firefox options menu. Users can access five main tabs, like Browser or Security, which lead to several subtabs that provide access to the settings.

Let me give you an example that helped me actually. Clicking on the Browser tab opens a menu with several like User Agent, Location Bar and Download. A click on Download revealed the option to disable the alert that you receive when a download finishes. I would have a hard time finding that option in the about:config settings.

Users who would like to keep the alert can chance the interval in that it is shown and even increase or decrease the speed of the animation. You can find dozens of such helpful settings in Configuration Mania.

There are two buttons I always install when using Firefox, I have found that these not only shorten the time it takes me to do things, but they save me from a lot of frustration.

I use ftp a lot to transfer files to my own blog and when I really get into writing I can close and open it several times. I use Fire FTP, a Firefox extension that lets you transfer files via FTP protocol right there in your browser. This is an immensely useful tool, but to access it you need to go to the tools menu and select it from the list.

Luckily you can install the Fire FTP button that will let you access it from any toolbar. Remember, you won’t see it after you install, you need to right-click a toolbar, click on customize, find the button and drag it to any toolbar. I placed it just to the left of my URL bar , so it’s quite accessible.

My other favorite is the clear cache button. Since I make modifications to my blog a lot, it won’t always show up, since the blog is being loaded from the cache. This can only be helped if go to tools, click on clear private data (or press ctr+shift+del), uncheck all boxes except the cache and click ok. To be able to do this in less than five minutes, you can download the button, and install it in the same way as the FTP button. It’s not as pretty, but very useful.

Among other features that Opera has is the right-click Paste and Go option when you paste a link into the address bar. Firefox does not have this feature and I missed it dearly. I’m lazy and I think it’s to much work to paste the link into the address bar and hit enter or push a button afterwards to load the new site.

Paste and Go is a simple Firefox add-on which adds the functionality know from Opera to Firefox. It adds the paste and go function to the right-click menu when your mouse hovers above the address bar. It adds similar functionality to the search bar where the right-click menu entry is called paste and search.

Last but not least you can use a keyboard shortcut for the same effect. In Windows and Unix it is Control + SHIFT + V, on Mac COMMAND + SHIFT + V.

Some users are reporting that the newest version of the plugin caused errors while using the keyboard navigation. This is no problem for me because I’m not using keyboard navigation at all but it might be for some of you who do. You better don’t install the extension if you use or need the feature.

I was reading about Autohide yesterday over at lifehacker and had the plan to try it today to see if it was a useful add-on for mozilla firefox. Autohide manipulates the interface of firefox when entering fullscreen mode (F11) – you can select to (auto) hide certain bars and menu entries to have more space for the website itself. The following settings can be changed:

You may choose to always show the status bar or only on activity, you may hide all toolbars that are currently installed including the google and stumbleupon toolbar if they are installed on your system. The same can be done for the tab bar and the windows taskbar. Now, whenever you move your mouse over an hidden item (such as the menu bar) it becomes visible and you can interact with it normally.

The direct opposite of hidding certain items can also be configured which would be show always. If you can’t live without the tab bar and status bar you can select to have them always on. They never hide when you press F11 and go into fullscreen mode.

This application can benefit users with older displays and users who like to have all the information present on the screen.
