I think the most important anti-(add bad stuff here) is the person at the keyboard. I think 90% of all 'attacks' can be avoided with common sense. I'm not saying to not use such software, I just feel properly trainging people what to trust and what not can really help in avoiding problems.

I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.
Failing that, AVG gets the job done, but it's neither the best detection, fastest or lightest.
The best virus scanner at the moment is... *gasp* Norton 2010!
Those of you who haven't used Norton for a few years should really give it a go. It's lightweight, packed with configurations and above all, easy to uninstall!

After having used Norton in the past and seeing it on some laptops of fellow students I really don't think I'll give it a try. Even though I've been quite happy with AVG the past few years, I think I'm going to switch to Microsoft Security Essentials on my new laptop (once it finally comes back from repair).

I tend to review my choice of AV software around once a year and make a decision based on the best performing free solution at the time. MS security essentials got the nod this year, previously I've used Avira and AVG primarily.

I use Avast!5, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning, Spy-Bot for immunization, and Windows Firewall (yes, I know --- but I haven't been infected for years now, and my computer is old)
