Thread: Legalaty of re-downloading music

    Question Legalaty of re-downloading music

Back in the day, I bought American Idiot by Green Day (Which I still maintain was the best album of the last decade).
    It's now scratched to buggery.
Is it technically legal for me to download the CD from coda fm?
It's a moot point, I'm going to do it anyway, I'm just curious.

I'd say it depend on the country you are living in but I would suspect that it is not legal in most even though that does not make lots of sense.

    Done it now anyway.
I live in good old Blighty, and I think it's technically illegal to rip your own CDs here. It's a bit embarrassing, and even the music industry think it's silly.
Re-downloading would surely just be an extension of that?

I've always believed that if you've paid for the album you have every right to download that album if yours is damaged or un-ripable. (However if you gave or sold it to a friend you'd have to give up the MP3s)

Even if the feds knocked on your door, they'd have to cave to your logic regarding any albums meeting that criteria ;-)

If the Feds knock on your door I suspect there is more than 1 album involved here

While most Internet users would agree that this makes sense the lawyers would probably state otherwise. They would probably ask you to contact the manufacturer and get a replacement.

Well in a way I hope I get taken to court for this.
It would highlight the issues involved, and might be the catalyst for change.

Plus then if I started a torrent site everyone would join it.
