Youtube users experience a wide variety of problems and difficulties on the popular video hosting portal. Probably the most common for most users are playback problems while playing Youtube videos. This can be that a youtube video is not loading at all or – and this seems to be more common – that it stops the playback every few seconds which can really destroy the experience. If you search for problems related to Youtube videos you find a lot of solutions. These solutions seem to help some users but there is not a general solution available as of now that would fix the video playback issues for all. There are however a few important things that all users need to consider:

The web browser and the flash plugin should be up to date. Youtube uses Adobe’s Flash technology to stream the videos. There is unfortunately no official option to switch to a different technology like Apple’s Quicktime or Microsoft’s Windows Media Player. (Websites like Gametrailers.com offer this for example, read on to find out how to do this).

The computer itself has to be capable of playing the Youtube videos. Nothing can be done if the cpu or Internet connection is not fast enough to play the new 1080p videos. A switch to a lower resolution will do the trick in those situations. It might also be a good idea to open a performance monitor (or a task manager) to see if the cpu, memory or hard disk activity raises to critical levels during Youtube video playback. You can also check if it is related to your computer’s performance by downloading the video and playing it locally.

But lets say the computer and the Internet connection are fast enough and that the web browser, Flash plugin and audio and video drivers are also up to date. What if Youtube videos still stutter during playback? The best option here is to find out if it is web browser related. This can be done easily by downloading and testing Youtube video playback with other web browsers. Suggested browsers are Google’s Chome browser, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Opera.

The test can either lead to the conclusion that Youtube video playback is broken in all web browsers, in some or just in the one web browser that happens to be the default web browser that the user likes to use. The first conclusion seems to suggest either a hardware problem or Flash plugin problem while the last suggests a problem with the single web browser.

Here are a few solutions that have been posted by users around the web (remember to restart Firefox after making those changes).

Firefox Session Restore: The Firefox web browser will save sessions every ten seconds. This is a great way to save data automatically in case the web browser crashes. If Firefox does not crash regularly then there is not a need to save sessions every ten seconds as this can also be one of the reasons why Youtube videos stutter in Firefox. The fix is simple: Enter about:config in the Firefox address bar, filter for the term browser.sessionstore.interval, double-click that term and enter a new time for the session restore interval. The time has to be entered in milliseconds and a session store interval of 120000 or higher is recommended

Moving the disk cache to another hard drive or location: This can usually be done in any web browser. The idea is to move the disk cache, that is a temporary storage of data on the hard drive, to another faster drive. The disk cache is usually on the same drive as the operating system. If the computer has more than one drive it might be a good idea to move the cache to the second drive. Firefox users need to add the parameter in about:config by right-clicking, selecting Add, pasting the value browser.cache.disk.parent_directory and entering a location on the local computer system, e.g. d:\cache\ in the second form.

Disable hardware accelerator for Flash videos. This can be done by right-clicking a Youtube video, selecting Settings, switching to the Display tab (leftmost icon) and unchecking Enable Hardware Acceleration in the menu.

Try playing Youtube videos in their own web browser window without additional tabs open.

Increase the memory cache of the web browser. Open about:config, enter browser.cache.memory.capacity in the filter and change the default value to a higher memory cache capacity, e.g. 96000 (which would be 96 Megabytes).

Open the global Flash settings here and to set “always deny” in global security settings, and to set to unlimited in both ’storage’ tabs. A restart is required. (Thanks Charlie M)

Replace the Youtube Flash player with the default video processor of the computer system. This can be done using the Greasemonkey script No Flash Player. This can be the perfect solution for many users who only have problems with Adobe Flash and Youtube videos. This does however remove some of the controls like showing the code to embed Youtube videos in other websites.

Workarounds if the above solutions to play Youtube videos without pauses did not help:

The Play and Pause trick: Hit the pause button once the Youtube video starts playing. The web browser will continue caching the video. Start playback again once the video caching has reached a comfortable lead.

Download the Youtube videos: This is not a very comfortable solution and maybe not even practicable if many Youtube videos are watched throughout the day. It can however be the solution for individual Youtube videos that do not play normally on the site.

Switch to another web browser for Youtube. If you discovered that another web browser does not have the playback problems when playing videos on Youtube you might want to consider switching to that web browser for playing Youtube videos.

You could also try the Firefox add-on Media Player Connectivity which makes it possible to play Youtube videos in a separate media player that is installed on the computer system.

One of these suggestions and fixes hopefully helped fix Youtube video playback problems. If you know of another fix for this problem let us know in the comments. We would like to add it then to the article to make it a comprehensive resource for fixing Youtube playback problems. We would also like to hear from you if one of the fixes did solve your video playback problems.

We are continuing our login problems series with an article on Hotmail login problems. You can read previous login related articles by visiting the posts Facebook Login or Yahoo Mail Login. Hotmail is an online email service by Microsoft, which – like other email services – can be accessed from a website but also from a desktop email client. The standard Hotmail login page is located at Hotmail.com which will redirect the web browser to a Windows Live Login page.

The Hotmail user can then log into Hotmail using the Windows Live ID or the Hotmail username and password that were selected during setup of the email service. The Hotmail username is usually the Hotmail email address.

The website contains an option to restore the Hotmail password if it cannot be entered correctly. There are two options to reset the password. The first is to use location information and the secret answer to the question to reset the password, the second to send password reset instructions to email. The second option obviously makes only sense if the email account can still be accessed.

Microsoft has created a help file that tries to help Hotmail users who cannot sign in to the service:

If you can’t sign in to a website or service with your Windows Live ID (The e-mail address and password that you use to sign in to Windows Live programs and services such as Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger; Microsoft services such as Xbox LIVE, MSN, and Office Live; and anywhere else that you see the Windows Live ID logo.) , try the following:

    * Make sure that you typed your password correctly. Passwords are case sensitive (Capable of distinguishing between uppercase [capital] and lowercase [small] letters. For example, A is different from a. If information is case sensitive, it must be typed with the required capitalization.) . If you’ve forgotten your password, try to reset it. For more information, see Reset your password.
* Make sure that your Caps Lock isn’t on.
* Make sure that the correct domain (A group of computers and devices on a network that are administered with common rules and procedures. The domain name is the part of your e-mail address after the @ sign, such as hotmail.com.) name is typed in the Windows Live ID box.
* Check that the Windows Live network isn’t temporarily out of service.
* Check that the website or service that you want to sign in to has the Windows Live symbol.

There are two options for users who want to avoid login difficulties in the future. The first option is to configure Hotmail in a desktop email software. Those usually work even if the Hotmail website is temporarily not accessible. The other option is to use a password manager like Last Pass which can remember the username and password and log in the user automatically whenever the Hotmail page is opened.

I received error messages in uTorrent after switching from Windows XP to Windows 7. All uTorrent downloads were showing Error: Access is denied after a few seconds. The temporary solution was to run uTorrent in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode. Several users commented in the thread stating that they did not experience this error messages in Windows 7.

Further observation revealed that only old torrents were showing that error message. All new torrents were downloading just fine even if the compatibility mode was disabled. The solution to the problem was therefor an access problem of the new Windows 7 user account. More precisely a write access problem.

It was thankfully very easy to fix. A right-click on a temporary file or folder in the uTorrent cache folder and the selection of Properties opened a window with configuration possibilities. The Security tab at the top of the window lead to the access permissions for the selected file or folder. It displayed the access rights for various system users including the system administrator, the content owner (that’s the Windows XP user in this case) and the currently logged in user.

This can be easily changed by clicking on the Edit link to edit permissions for specific users of the computer system. All it takes is to select the current user in that new window and add write access permissions for that user. Once that is done the torrents will download just fine without errors.

The same write problem exists for other files that have been created in the previous operating system. If you are encountering write problems you simply need to add the write permission for the logged in user to be able to save the file.

I switched to Windows 7 earlier today and have started to install most of the computer programs that I work regularly with. One of the programs was the Bittorrent client uTorrent which caused a strange problem. After configuring the new port forwarding rules it would start downloading and seeding the data as usual but would display the error message “Error: Access is Denied” for every torrent that was still downloading parts of the file.

My initial though was that it was either a rights-issue or a read-only flag that was preventing the writing of the data to the hard drive. Both assumptions did not turn out to be true however.

It seems that uTorrent is having compatibility issues with Windows 7. The easiest way to fix those is to run uTorrent in compatibility mode. This can be done by right-clicking the uTorrent.exe file and selecting Properties from the menu. This opens the file properties with a compatibility tab at the top.

Checking the “Run this program in compatibility mode for” will make the application run in the selected compatibility mode. I have selected Windows XP (Service Pack 3) which is working fine. Others might be working as well but this has not been tested.

A click on Apply and Ok will close the window. The program will be launched from then on in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode which gets rid of the error message for now.

The most common type of errors that are encountered by Facebook users are usernames and passwords that are not accepted. Less common are page display problems or other error messages during the login phase. There are a few options for users who face Facebook login problems.

One option would be to request a password reset directly at Facebook. The option is available on the Facebook login page and requires only the email address that the user registered the Facebook account with. This usually should solve the problem of not being able to log into Facebook.

A superior solution to this is to use a password manager like Last Pass to store the Facebook account information. Last Pass can automatically fill out the form at the Facebook login page and log the user into the social networking website without interaction at all. Last Pass is currently available for several popular web browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

Facebook support contains a Facebook login and password help page that addresses several questions that Facebook users might have about the login process. This includes

I can’t log in to Facebook.

I want to change my password.

My account was hacked or “phished.”

I want to change my login email address or add a new contact email address.

I want to sign up for an account. I’m experiencing issues registering for an account.

There is a yellow banner prompting me to confirm my account.

I have questions about the “Keep me logged in” option.

Bugs and known problems.

You can visit the support page here.

How many times have you had networking issues and not known exactly where to start? With Linux there are so many tools you can choose from. Add to that the choice between console and GUI and you have the making for a rather confusing start. Most new Linux users (and many of those who have used Linux for a while) have no idea how to use the whois, finger, Port Scanning, and other helpful networking tools. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

With the help of the GNOME Nettools you can have a sweet collection of powerful tools that will help you to troubleshoot your network in no time. And this collection of tools is all wrapped up into a user-friendly graphical interface. So without any further adieu, let’s take a look at this powerful suite of tools.

Features

The GNOME Nettools includes the following tools:

Devices: Have all information about your networking devices at your fingertips.

Ping: Get detailed information using the ping tool.

Netstat: Get detailed information about your routing table, active network services, and multicast information about your machine.

Traceroute: Trace the path to a network host.

Port scan: Scan for open ports on servers and desktops.

Lookup: Get detailed information about a server.

Finger: Lookup a users finger entry.

Whois: Lookup a whois entry for a domain.

GNOME Nettools also features:

Copy information to text report.

Help system.

Drop downs for previously entered addresses/domains.

Easy to use GUI.

Now let’s take a look and see how this tool is used.

Usage

Figure 1

As you can see there has been no mention of installation. That is because GNOME Nettools is installed by default. In order to start up the tool you only have to go to the Administration sub-menu of the System menu. Once you have fired up the tool you will be greeted with main window at the Devices tab. This tab is where you gather the information about your installed networking devices. As you can see (In Figure 1) there is plenty of detailed information about my default eth0 interface. You can switch this to display information about any connected internet device you have on the machine by using the Interface drop-down.

The next tab, Ping, is where you can actually start troubleshooting networking issues. Ping is almost always one of the first tools I use, but I generally use it in command line form. Since most new Linux users prefer to not use the command line – you can still get your ping on with Nettools. Click on the Ping tab to reveal how the Ping tool works (see Figure 2).

Figure 2

By default the Nettools Ping tool will be configured for a limited 5 requests. You can up that number or even change it to an unlimited number if you need. In Figure 2 I have sent 5 ping requests to an internal server and received 100% sucess on my packets. I know this server is at least responding.

The other tools will all work exactly as you would expect them. One thing that is nice is as a tool is working you can switch over to another tool without disrupting the original tools task. This is especially nice when running a traceroute that can take a while (see Figure 3).

Figure 3

The traceroute tool will follow a path, hop for hop, to a destination you enter. In Figure 3 I ran a traceroute on www.google.com which ended before it reached its goal. This, of course, was only to show you the output of the traceroute (as there is not much I can personally do if my route to www.google.com is stopped outside of the boundaries of my network or my service providers network. But it gives you an idea of where the route stops. If this were a corporate issue, and the destination was one I had to reach, I would know precisely where the last known successful hop was (in the case of Figure 3 – after the 65.222.158.82 address).

I can then use the Whois tool to discover who is connected to that address. By clicking on the Whois tab and then entering the IP address above I receive the following information:

MCI Communications Services, Inc. d/b/a Verizon Business UUNET65 (NET-65-192-0-0-1)
65.192.0.0 - 65.223.255.255
SPLICE COMMUNICATIONS, INC. UU-65-222-158-80-D4 (NET-65-222-158-80-1)
65.222.158.80 - 65.222.158.87

If www.google.com were a critical address for me (and my company) to reach for work (or a host of my company’s web site) I could at least contact the owner of this domain.

Final thoughts

As you would expect, the rest of the Nettools tools work in a very similar fashion than their command line counter parts. The only difference? You don’t have to open up a terminal window to use them. No commands to remember, no commands to type. Just easy network analysis, with the help of a user-friendly GUI tool.

Facebook is currently probably the most popular social networking website on the Internet. With a user base growth of 50 million in the last three months it is without doubt now ranking at the top with its 300 million users. Facebook login problems are as common as those on other websites. This does not only fall into the forgotten username or password category but also phishing problems which every major web service has to cope with.

The standard Facebook login page is available directly at the Facebook homepage. There users can register or log into their Facebook account. A mobile Facebook page is available as well as a Facebook lite website. The former for mobile users the latter for users with slow Internet connections.

A forgot your password link is available on all three pages in case the password cannot be remembered correctly. The Facebook login username is usually the email address that was used in the Facebook signup. Facebook users who want to get rid of all the problems related to logging into Facebook including forgotten passwords or phishing threats should use a password manager like Last Pass, which is available for Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, for their Facebook login. This password manager remembers the Facebook username and password, will automatically fill them into the forms at the Facebook homepage and even perform the Facebook login automatically.

Here we go again, building upon that rock solid Ubuntu Server installation. If you haven’t already done so, you should read the first article in this series (”Installing Ubuntu Server 9.04“). Once you’ve read that (and followed the steps), you are ready to go for installing one of the easiest to use and most reliable bug tracking systems available from the open source community.

Mantis is an open source bug tracking tool that is as feature-rich and stable as it is free. It is written in PHP and works with MySQL, MS SQL, and PostgreSQL databases. Mantis can be installed on Linux, Windows, and OS X and can use nearly any modern web browser.

Features

Naturally, before you try a bug tracking software, you will want to see the feature listing. Mantis Bug Tracking includes such features as:

Simple or Advanced issue pages.

Multiple projects per instances.

User access levels.

Projects, sub-projects, and category support.

Built in reporting.

Custom fields.

Email notification.

Issue monitoring.

Sponsorship support.

Issue report via email.

And much, much more (for a full list see the Mantis Feature List page). But enough said with the what, let’s get on with the how.

Getting and installing

The first step is to download the file. You can download the latest, stable release from the Mantis Sourceforge site. Once you have that file move it into the Apache document root with the command:

sudo mv mantis-XXX.tar.gz /var/www/

Where XXX is the release number.

Now unpack the tar file with the command;

sudo tar xvzf mantisbt-XXX.tar.gz

Where XXX is the release number.

Now change the name of the mantis directory with the command:

mv mantisbt-XXX mantis

Where XXX is the release number.

Before you move on to the web-based installation, you need to create a database. I use phpmyadmin to do this (Read how to set this up in my article “Install phpmyadmin for easy MySQL administration“.) Create a database called “bugtracker” (no quotes). Once you have done that you then need to go to the file /var/www/mantis/config_inc.php.sample and edit the Database Settings variables. You will need to edit the variables:

g_hostname

g_db_username

g_db_password

Make these reflect your particular installation. Once you have that finished change the name of that file to config_inc.php and you are ready to check your installation.

You are now ready to point your browser to:

http://ADDRESS_OF_SERVER/mantis/admin/

Where ADDRESS_OF_SERVER is the actual IP or URL for your server.

You will see four links:

Check your installation.

Upgrade your installation.

Modify stylesheets.

System utilities.

Click on the Check your installation link. This address will take you to the page that will check your server for all the necessary requirements for installation. Once that passes you are ready for the installation.

Web-based setup

Figure 1

Now point your browser to http://ADDRESS_OF_SERVER/admin/install.php This page will walk you through the steps for the database setup (see Figure 1.)

Oddly enough it looks like you are being asked to create an admin acccount here. You’re not, for the Admin Username/Password you will want to use the same Username/Password that you used for the Database user.

Fill that information out and click the Install button. The next page will greet you with a bunch of information that informs you (Hopefully) that everything passes. At the bottom of that page is a small link to continue with login. Click that link and you will find yourself at the Mantis Log In screen. The default username/login for a mantis installation is:

Username: administrator

Password: root

The first thing you will want to do, upon logging in, is to change the account information for this login. Click on the My Account button and make the necessary changes.

You are now ready to start using your Mantis Bug Tracking system.

Final thoughts

I have found the Mantis Bug Tracking system to be one of the easiest to use in a category that is often filled with overly complicated tool (either to install or use). I think you will find that Mantis meets (or exceeds) all of your bug tracking needs.

If your laptop is running Linux you might not be happy with the battery life you are getting. There are numerous reasons for the possible extra drain on your battery. Some of the biggest issues are: Hard drive spin-downs, interrupts, and power management. Figuring out how to make these adjustments to your kernel (or subsystems) to gain a bit of extra battery life would take more time googling than you would probably prefer. Fortunately there is a single application available to take care of this for you. Powertop is one of those tools every user of Linux on a laptop should have installed – especially if your laptop depends primarily on its battery for life.

Powertop was created by Lesswatts.org with the sole purpose of helping users find those programs and/or systems that are using too much power. The end result? More battery life for you to enjoy. Power top is easy to install and use. Powertop is a curses-based application so it is run inside of a terminal very much like the Top application. Don’t expect a fancy GUI here, it’s text-based but still user-friendly. In this article you will find out how to install Powertop and use it to get the most out of your battery.

Installing Powertop

So long as you are using a modern release, you should find Powertop in your distributions’ repositories. And since Powertop is a terminal-based application, I will illustrate how to install via command line.

The steps are simple:

Open up a terminal window.

Issue the command sudo install powertop.

Click ‘y’ to okay the installation.

That’s it. Powertop is now ready for you to use.

Using Powertop

Figure 1

With your terminal still open issue the command sudo powertop to start the application. You can not run Powertop as the standard user because Powertop has to collect and modify information that the standard user has no access to. Fortunately sudo will do the trick.

What you see will differ, depending upon your distribution, installation, configuration, etc.

As you can see ,in Figure 1, Powertop has a few suggestions to aid my laptop. The biggest issue is wakeups and Powertop is giving me the top causes for wakeups.

As you can also see, Powertop offers suggestions to solve the various problems. Not only does Powertop make suggestions, it will offer to take care of the suggestion for you. In the instance above you can see Powertop is suggesting I disable the hal system from polling my CD drive. You can do this with the command:

hal-disable-polling –device /dev/cdrom

or you can just hit the ‘K’ key and Powertop will take care of this for you.

Once you take care of this suggestion (whether you let Powertop take care of it or you do it manually) Powertop will then suggest another way for you get more power from your laptop and will offer to take care of the issue for you. You can continue on like this until Powertop has resolved every issue it can find.

Final thoughts

Powertop is an effective means of helping your laptop gain more battery life without having to recompile a kernel, manually edit a configuration file, or issue any commands (outside of starting the application). After following the suggestions of Powertop you should experience a noticeable difference in your battery life.

A new way of thinking thanks to virtual machines.

Although the Guest Additions tool has been covered already, if you’ve tried using Windows 7 in VirtualBox you will have most likely encountered some issues. The main issue is that Guest Additions isn’t supported. That doesn’t mean it can not be installed. It can, you just have to trick Windows 7 in order to do so. In this article I will show you just how to do so.

The basic installation

The first thing you need to do is get Windows 7 installed as a virtual machine. You can follow the directions for installing Windows XP. The only difference will be selecting the version of Windows you will be installing. Even though Windows 7 is not yet officially supported, there is an entry for the latest Microsoft OS in the dropdown.

After Windows 7 is installed you might notice (depending upon your hardware) that you can not see the task bar. This is because, without the Guest Additions, VirtualBox can not handle the proper resolution for Windows 7. So, it’s obvious you will need this tool.

The trick

The trick for installing Guest Additions in Window 7 is to trick it into thinking it’s being installed in Vista. While Vista is running click on the Devices menu and select Install Guest Additions. You will go through the same steps as you would for installing the Guest Additions on Windows XP at this point. The difference is the actual installer won’t start up. This is where it gets a bit tricky.

The process of installing the Guest Additions will have downloaded a mountable file on your system. If you click on the Windows 7 Start Menu and then click on Computer you will see that file listed along with Local Disk and Floppy Drive (even if you don’t have a floppy drive). Right click the VirtualBox Guest Additions entry (it will probably be labeled as “D”) and select Open.

In the resulting window you will see a number of files. Among these files you will see listed entries for both x86 and 64bit. These files are called:

VBoxWindowsAdditions-amd64

VBoxWindowsAdditions-x86

Figure 1

Which file you use will depend upon what hardware you are using. Right click the one you want to use and select Troubleshoot Compatibility (see Figure 1). This will walk you through a Wizard that will attempt to solve the problem. Most likely it won’t, so you will have to do so manually. When the wizard has finished you will have two options: Try Recommended Settings and Troubleshoot Program. Select Troubleshoot Program and then, in the new window, select the first entry which is

Figure 2

“The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won’t install or run now.” After you select this option click the Next button and then select Vista from the list (see Figure 2). Once you have selected that option click Next and then, in the resulting window, click the “Start the Program” button. This will actually start the process of installing the Guest Additions for Windows 7. You can now finish this install as you would any other.

Final thoughts

I am confident when Windows 7 is finally released this process won’t be necessary. But if you need to test out Windows 7 now, this is the way to go.

Just about fifteen minutes ago I was working on an article for Linux.com when I thought I was going to lose a ton of work. I was writing my last paragraph on a 1,600+ word article (entering the article in their web-based system). I was going back to OpenOffice to copy and paste all of my work before submitting the article when OpenOffice locked up my desktop. After an explicative escaped my mouth I calmly set about to try to recover my work. I succeeded, but only with the help of a virtual console.

Now normally I do frequent saving to avoid such issues. But right now there is no Save Draft function so I rely on frequent saving to OpenOffice. It always works and I rarely have issues. This time, however, I did. When I un-iconified OpenOffice (I am using Elive-Compiz so applications minimize to icons) everything but he cursor and keyboard froze up tight. Or so I thought. What actually happened was that OpenOffice caused an issue keeping me from gaining access to any application. I could move the cursor but that was it. I couldn’t get a menu or interact with any applications.

What happened?

For those that are curious here is the output of my ~/.xsession-errors file:

window managed: 0xc0155b : 0x40abdc, 402
_e_container_cb_mouse_down
window managed: 0xc016f0 : 0x240000a, 402

After a bit of research it looks like it could be an autoraise error. That, of course, doesn’t mention how I got out of this situation. Let’s take a look.

How it worked out

Fortunately I had a good idea which application caused the problem. I assumed this because OpenOffice Writer was the last application I had any interaction with. Even if it wasn’t OpenOffice I had the following applications open that could have possibly caused the problem.

Claws Mail

Firefox

Rhythmbox

GnuCash

xterm

I had to hope that the issue wasn’t Firefox, because that was the data I really needed to save. So, with my list in hand I hopped over to a virtual console to see if I could get lucky.

Getting to a virtual console

Virtual consoles allow you to, effectively, have more than one user logged in. Or you could have the same user logged in with one instance being a graphical desktop and the other a command line desktop. To get to different virtual desktops you enter the Ctrl-Alt-F*keys (Where * is 1-0). When I got to the virtual console I logged in with the my standard user information and was greeted with my bash prompt. Since I assumed the culprit was OpenOffice writer I wanted to get the PID of this application so I issued the command:

ps aux | grep soffice

Which gave the proper PID for the currently running command soffice -writer. The next step was to issue the kill command on the PID like so:

kill PID

Where PID is the actual PID given to me by the ps command above.

When the process was killed I then hopped back to my original console (in my case it was Ctrl-Alt-F7) and, lo and behold, I had regained control of my desktop. I could then re-open OpenOffice, save my work, finish my article, and submit.

Bullet Doged.

Final thoughts

Yes this whole situation could have been avoided with a working Save Draft feature, but that is not available yet. I could have also been using a different desktop. The “what ifs” could go on and on. But ultimately these things happen and it’s always nice to know you have the means to solve the problem, even if you have to get creative to do so.

The installation of Java can terminate on some computer systems with the error message “Error 25099 Unzipping Core Files Failed”. This can happen with the Java online or offline installer. The reason for this error message is not totally clear but there are a few things that users can do to fix it to be able to install java without further problems.

The first thing that they should try is to uninstall all remains of previous Java installations. This can be done from the Windows Control Panel. The user can then try to install Java again once Java has been uninstalled and the computer rebooted. Another possibility to ensure that no traces of Java are left on the computer system is to run the excellent JavaRa software program which can remove all Java files and information from the computer.

It might happen that the error 25099 is still popping up after completely removing Java from the system. Another option to try is to check the change destination folder during installation and pick a different folder for the installation of Java.

This should fix the problem “Error 25099 Unzipping Core Files Failed” that some users have when trying to install Java on a computer running the Windows operating system.
