Computer users are lazy. Well, not all of them but most are. I just have to look around and see friends to try to automate as much as possible to save some clicks and time. The article Greasmonkey scripts for the lazy is for them, and everyone else who feels the same way. I don’t want to explain Greasemonkey (again) in detail but here is a rather short explanation. Greasemonkey can be installed as a Firefox extension that changes website behavior. To change the behavior you need to install so called userscripts which change elements on websites.

This can be something profane like removing advertisement from websites or disabling comments but also clever additions that increase the usability of a website. Some users prefer to have as much space in Firefox for websites as possible. One way to get rid of some of the toolbars and menus temporarily would be to press F11 which removes the title, the bookmarks toolbar and the menubar. Another way would be to just remove the menubar which is not needed most of the time anyway. To do that you simply need the Firefox extension called Hide Menubar which removes the menubar once installed.

You can temporarily display the menubar again by pressing the alt key on your keyboard. It is also possible to add it again by right-clicking the toolbars at the top and enabling the so called Mainmenu Toolbar. You can get rid of the bookmarks tab as well if you would like to but as far as I’m concerned they are pretty useful and I need them to often to hide them in Firefox.

I received an email from Heather describing a problem that she encountered. She enabled the content advisor option in Internet Explorer but lost the password that allowed her to configure or disable the content advisor again. The so called supervisor password is defined when you first activate the content advisor. The funny thing is that the password is still set even if you uninstall and install the Microsoft Internet Explorer again.

There is however an easy method to disable the content advisor password again and it is a typically example of weak security. If you can look it up on the Internet your kids can as well. All you need to do is delete two keys in the registry to disable the supervisor password which makes it possible to disable the content advisor or change settings to be able to visit all websites.

Some users are switching between Firefox and Internet Explorer on their computer depending on the task at hand. It is for instance essential for webmasters to check their websites in the most commonly used web browsers. I thought it would be nice to share bookmarks between Firefox and Internet Explorer to use the same bookmarks in both browsers. This can be done easily with the Firefox extension Plain old Favorites which adds the favorites from Internet Explorer to Firefox. The favorites menu is placed next to the bookmarks menu in Firefox.

Whenever a new bookmark is added to Internet Explorer it appears in Firefox as well. You can also add every website that you visit with Firefox to the favorites by adding that website using the new favorites menu instead of the bookmarks menu. We can enhance this method further by tweaking several settings.

I’m still using Firefox and I thought it would be nice to share some advanced configuration tips that helped me a lot with you. This article was inspired by Lifehackers Top Firefox 2 config tweaks but adds advanced tips to the mix. Rest assured that the configuration tweaks will not list the same tips that you see on every other site nowadays, I promise new unseen tips.

I should probably start with some basic information on how you edit the Firefox configuration at all. This is actually pretty simple: Enter about:config in the address bar and hit enter. A large preferences list should appear. Every option has a preference name, a status, a type and a value.We are using the name to find the option in the large list. Status defines if it is still the default value or has been edited by the user, type defines which values are accepted in the value field. For boolean it would be true or false, integer a number and so on. To filter the list enter part of the name into the Filter text field, the results get updated on the fly. On to the tweaks..
