The location bar, or address bar, in Firefox displays the url of the website that you are visiting. The website is normally displayed without dashes and contains the protocol, the subdomain, the domain name and the path. A less confusing way especially for novice or insecure users would be to divide the url into different parts.

This is what the locationbar extension for Firefox is doing. It removes the protocol from the address bar, lightens the color of the subdomain and presents the path in a breadcrumb display style. This makes it far easier to recognize the url which is especially good to detect if you are on a fake website.

Several options can change the appearance and display of the url. It is in my opinion useful to remove that the https protocol is not shown as well. This is important to detect fake websites.

A new version of Firefox has been released today. It is already available on the official Mozilla website and through the update check in Firefox itself. Two critical, five moderate and two low security vulnerabilities have been fixed in the new version which makes it a recommended update for all Firefox users.

You can download it the usual ways. The upgrade did not affect any of the existing extensions that I have been using. Two new languages, Georgian and Romanian, have been added as well, not sure about any other changes though.

Firefox just appends a new bookmark at the end of the folder that you saved the bookmark into unless you drag and drop the new bookmark into the location. This makes it rather difficulty to search through your existing bookmarks because you have to remember when you added the bookmark as well if you have a lot of bookmarks saved.

There is however a way to sort the bookmarks in Firefox alphanumerically with the choice to sort them ascending or natural. Natural would mean that the bookmarks would be sorted in their natural order while ascending would revert them.

We also have to differentiate between the Bookmarks Manager, the sidebar and the bookmarks menu. Sorting the bookmarks in the Bookmarks Manager has no effect on the display of the bookmarks in the sidebar and the bookmarks menu.

My Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox is filled with lots of bookmarks, many of them stored in folders to stuff even more bookmarks into the space of a single toolbar. While the Bookmarks Toolbar is useful for accessing websites fast it has one limitation that made me do some research to see if there would be a way to fix it.

I’m talking about the fact that the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox is always displayed. It is possible to uncheck the toolbar which means that it is not shown which is not what I wanted to do of course. I was looking for a way to increase the space on the screen that the visited website would occupy while still keeping the Bookmarks Toolbar ready to be accessed.

I found a way to hide the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox and activate it only if the mouse is hovered over the area where it would normally appear. This way it is possible to have more space available for displaying the website while still being able to access the Bookmarks Toolbar if needed.

If you are using Firefox’s option to save usernames and passwords for websites that you visited to automatically fill them in when you visit them again you might find a Greasemonkey script called AutologinJ useful. I’m not quite sure what the J stands for but this nice little script presses the login button for you automatically which pretty much means that you can lean back and enjoy the show while Firefox logs you in automatically to the website that you just visited.

This however only works if only one login has been saved for the site in question. I tested it with Gmail, Ebay and some forums and it worked flawlessly. Before you can use AutologinJ you need to install the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox as well which adds support for scripts like AutologinJ.

A good way to find out if only one login has been saved for the website in question is to go into Tools > Options and there on Security > Show Passwords. This displays all saved usernames and passwords and the websites so that you can easily check if more than one login has been saved. If that is the case you either need to delete the other logins or not use the autologin feature on that site.
