Ever asked yourself if you should take the car, train or plane on your next holiday or business trip? Maybe you have even tried to calculate the traveling time and expenses for the various traveling options. Doing that manually can take quite some time. That’s where the new web service routeRank steps in. RouteRank queries many different traveling services like airlines or train companies to calculate the best way of traveling to a selected destination.

The service will display all results based on the cheapest possible price with the option to change the sorting factor to either time, means of travel or CO2 emission. It will display the departure and arrival date and the number of legs for each transportation means.

The information offered by routeRank make it very comfortable to find suitable means of travel. It is even possible to customize the car that might be used for the travel (including petrol type, fuel consumption and petrol price) as well as the departure and arrival transfer means which will be included in the calculation.

A quick sample route from Berlin, Germany to London, UK revealed the following: The most environmentally friendly way of traveling is by train with a CO2 emission of 57 kg, a traveling time of 10:15 hours, a price of 169,50 Euro and three legs. The fastest way is by plane which would cut the traveling time almost by half to 5:40 hours. The price would be 54,30 and the CO2 emission at 212 kg. Traveling by car would be the most expensive, longest and environmentally unfriendly way of traveling between the two locations.

One interesting aspect here is that the service is considering the transfer to and from some of the locations. If you use one of the cheap airlines you usually do not arrive at the main airport of the destination but another airport that is sometimes badly connected to the city. RouteRank takes this into account.

RouteRank is an interesting service for users who want to quickly see the best means of traveling between two locations based on important parameters such as traveling costs and time.

Are you a cell phone owner who pays for ringtones? Are you someone who recently searched for answers to questions like “how to use iTunes ringtones” or “how to find free iPhone ringtunes”? If you do you might like the following comfortable way of creating and adding new ringtunes automatically to Apple’s iTunes software. The first release of iRingtones makes that possible. The software program uses the freely available Nero AAC Encoder to convert a standard WAV file into an iPhone compliant M4R ringtone. It will also add the created ringtone automatically to the user’s iTunes library and copy it to the ringtones folder of that library.

The process requires some manual work at the beginning as the program will only accept wav audio files for input. This means that the user either needs to have a wav file of the future ringtone or convert an audio file into wav format before the creation can commence.

The user needs to add the paths to the Nero AAC Encoder executable and the iTunes library to the portable program upon startup. The program will then check the locations and if they are valid open a file browser to select a wav audio file from the computer system. That wav file will then automatically be converted into the m4r ringtone format. It is then copied to the iTunes library and the ringtone folder of that library.

The process is fine for users who want to created iPhone ringtones every now and then. It could be made more user friendly by adding support for mp3 files and the creation of multiple ringtones at once. It is – as of now – only possible to select one wav file at a time. Not very handy for users who want to create several ringtones for their iPhone. The portable software iRingtones is available for download at the Codeplex website. It is compatible with most versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system and requires the Microsoft .net Framework.

Remember Pin Tabs? The Firefox add-on that we reviewed recently was mysteriously deleted from the Firefox add-on repository over at the Mozilla Firefox website. No one knew why it was deleted and it was not clear at that point in time if the developer would make it available again. The wait is now over with the release of the App Tabs add-on. App Tabs is basically an advanced version of Pin Tabs. The name now reflects the feature of the same name that the Firefox developer plan to include into Firefox 4.

The basic idea of App Tabs is to offer Firefox users a way to pin selected web services and websites to the tabbar of the web browser making them available always in the same spot. The idea works perfectly for websites that do not require back and forward navigation like Gmail or Google Docs but also for any other website or service that the user accesses all the time.

App Tabs pins selected tabs to the left side of the tabbar in Firefox. The tabs are minimized so that only the favicon of the website or service is displayed. This saves space in the tabbar and is usually appreciated by most users.

The new version of the App Tabs add-on adds comes with the following features:

App tabs can be saved across sessions! (default)

App tabs can be merged when closing a window. (default)

App tabs can be protected from being closed individually.

If you have Tabberwocky installed, App Tabs will automatically also lock app tabs that you create. This feature can of course be disabled by going to about:config and setting extensions.apptabs.lock to false.

Tabs can be converted into app tabs by ctrl-clicking them in the Firefox tabbar. App Tabs is currently compatible with all versions of Firefox 3.5x to 3.7x. The download is available at the Firefox add-on’s website.

Services that make use of the vast video and audio archive that is Youtube are springing out of the ground more recently in this year. YouScrobble is the latest service that is combining Youtubes video archive with the information provided by the music service Last.fm. This combination alone proves to be very effective. Users who visit Youtube can perform searches for music that they would like to listen to but the music (in form of videos) is usually unsorted and often unrelated to the artist (think cover versions for example). Last.fm on the other hand provides extensive information about artists, their albums and songs but playback is limited on the website.

YouScrobble brings the best of these two worlds together. Users who visit the music service can perform a search for an artist to be presented with the complete discography of that artist. The mashup now brings Youtube into the picture by allowing playback and downloads of the music found on Youtube.

The service makes use of three different user roles: Guests can search for and listen to music on the website. They are also allowed to download five songs every 24 hours. Registered users (still free) get ten additional downloads per day, a better download priority, playlist support and scrobble functionality to let Last.fm know about the music. Paid users finally get unlimited downloads and the highest priority in the download queue.

YouScrobble offers means to discover music in a different way. Users can also take a look at the categories or popular artists instead of searching for artists, albums, bands or songs.

Is the service legal? That’s a question that is better left to the lawyers in this case. The pay for downloads model that YouScrobble uses is certainly the most controversial aspect of the service. As Martin Bryant over at Read Write Web points out it is one thing to embed videos on a website that playback music and another to offer that music for download. But that’s something that the developer’s have to dell with eventually, not the users who are using the service.

The firewall in Windows 7 is a solid software firewall. It is by far not as advanced as third party firewalls but it does a good job at protecting a computer system running Windows 7. The functionality of the firewall has been improved ever since Microsoft starting shipping Windows XP versions with the software firewall. It does lack several features that most third party firewalls offer including usability enhancements like displaying prompts whenever an unknown application tries to create a connection to a private or public network.

The Windows 7 firewall will block the connection if the application has not been configured previously in the Windows Control Panel. The configuration can be strenuous especially in the beginning right after the first start of the operating system.

That’s where the Windows 7 Firewall Control steps in. The free version of the software program adds those application prompts to Windows 7. It displays a prompt whenever an unknown application tries to connect to the Internet.

This gives the user in front of the computer the option to enable or disable all traffic or enable only incoming or outgoing traffic. The selected setting will be stored in the program’s main interface only. This is one weakness of the program as it does not sync the settings with the Windows 7 Firewall. This is problematic as it means that the configured settings will be gone if the Windows 7 Firewall Control gets uninstalled. The reason for not syncing is that Windows 7 Firewall Control works independently from the Windows 7 Firewall. It does grab the configuration at startup but does not communicate with the firewall after that.

A pro version of Windows 7 Firewall Control is available offering additional features. Both versions can be downloaded at the developer’s website. (via Windows 7 News: Windows 7 Firewall Control)

PayPal is a widely used financial service that allows people from all over the world to transfer money to other PayPal users by simply specifying an email address the money should be send to. It has become even more popular in recent years with the eBay tie-in which practically made PayPal the preferred payment method for many eBay users. A financial service that popular is a priority target for worms, phishing attacks, trojans and other kinds of attacks that try to steal PayPal login information in order to transfer money from the PayPal account to another one.

PayPal recently began to sell a so called PayPal Security Key to protect PayPal users from phishing attacks. The system works by protecting the login to the account not only with a username and password but also a security key that is generated on the fly on an external device. Attackers who are able to steal PayPal login information would need physical access to the security key to be able to log into the account at a later time.

It is not a 100% perfect solution as attackers are still able to circumvent the security key if they have additional information related to the PayPal user’s account. It still is a viable protection in most cases. PayPal is hosting a security center on their website that is informing and educating users about security risks and how to reduce them and prevent attacks.

Probably the best way of fighting most attacks and all phishing attacks is to always open the PayPal website directly instead of clicking on links that are supposed to lead there. Another security method is to use a password manager to store the PayPal login information. Many password managers, such as Last Pass, can fill out the login form and log in the user automatically in configured accounts. This can be a very effective method of detecting fake websites as the password manager will not fill out the login information automatically on these websites.

After dabbling around with several music players in Windows 7 I finally decided to stick with AIMP2. The uninstallation of Winamp turned out to be interesting. The uninstaller noted that not all files in the Winamp folder could be deleted during installation. A quick check revealed that the folder contained the files elevator.exe, elevatorps.dll and nscrt.dll. A simple try to delete those files in the same Windows session turned out to be unsuccessful which led to the initial thought that this could be some kind of successful malware attack on my system which turned out not to be the case.

Having only worked with Winamp under Windows XP I was unaware that Winamp was installing the files elevator.exe and elveatorps.dll for elevation in Windows Vista and apparently Windows 7 as well as this thread at the Winamp forum suggests.

The easiest way to get rid of the files in the same session is by using the following Windows commands in the command line after switching to the directory Winamp was installed in:

elevator.exe /unregserver
regsrv32 /U elevatorps.dll
regsrv32 /U nscrt.dll

It is likely that these files can also be deleted in Windows Explorer after a restart of the computer system. Users who have UAC disabled in Windows can also get rid of these files according to the forum post quoted above.

Offering a popular website or web service is not always a blessing. This especially becomes apparent when you have to deal with security related issues like phishing attacks. Facebook is without doubt one of the most popular sites on the Internet these days and it therefor comes unsurprisingly that the service is regularly attacked.

Trend Micro are reporting about yet another Facebook phishing attack that is currently in the wild. The attack begins – like most phishing attacks – by mass mailing potential Facebook users informing them that they need to update their Facebook login credentials. A link is offered in that email and if they follow that link they land on a website that looks like Facebook. What’s interesting here is that the email address field of the Facebook login form is already filled out so that the Facebook user only needs to enter the Facebook password to complete the process.

A click on the login button will open a new page that contains a link to an update tool which installs a trojan on the user’s system.

It attempts to access a Web site to download a file which contains information where the Trojan can download an updated copy of itself, and where to send its stolen data. This configuration file also contains a list of targeted bank-related Web sites from which it steals information. Note that the contents of the file, hence the list of Web sites to monitor, may change any time.

It attempts to steal sensitive online banking information, such as user names and passwords. This routine risks the exposure of the user’s account information, which may then lead to the unauthorized use of the stolen data.

The blog post contains security tips on how to distinguish legit from phishing emails. Users who are interested in those can visit the blog post but the most important lesson once again is to avoid clicking on links that are send via email.

There are two main reasons for switching to one of Google’s alternative search interfaces: Speed and Usability. The following three Google search engines utilize the same search index and parameters that the default Google search engine offers with the difference that all four of them are faster, more accessible and less obtrusive when displaying search results. One of the major points of criticism lately has been the additional elements that the standard Google search engine displays on the search results pages. This includes advertisement, sponsored listings, Google Maps, Google News or Youtube results thrown into the mix, something that many search engine users feel completely unnecessary.

Google Sandbox Search

This search engine comes close to the standard Google search engine. It makes use of a similar user interface with the main difference that the search result pages do not display advertisements or other elements that Google likes to add to those pages. [link]

Google XHTML

Google XHTML is a search interface for mobile devices. It can be accessed by desktop computers and normal web browsers. The benefit is a faster interface that displays the search results without additional noise. The search result listings are aligned to the left and contain titles and short descriptions of the contents. [link]

Google IE

Another interface for mobile devices. The IE suggests that it might be related to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer in some way. This one the most barebone of them all which especially becomes apparent on the search results pages. The results only consist of the page titles with no description or other information thrown into the mix. This can be confusing if many of the websites listed in the results use the same or a similar title. [link]

Got anything to add? Let us know in the comments.

Experienced computer users have a specific routine that they go through whenever they install a new operating system. This includes playing around with the default configuration of the operating system but also installing a set of applications that they consider essential. The following article will take a look at ten applications to install after installing Windows 7. A fair warning though; This is obviously a biased list and what we call essential might be the exact opposite for the user next door. So, this is our list and it will, without doubt, differ from many of the lists that you would create.

All programs that are listed below are fully compatible with the Windows 7 operating system.

1. Web Browser Firefox

Windows 7 ships with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and while IE 8 is a perfectly fine browser it does not offer the same level of speed and extensibility that the Firefox web browser offers. Yes there are other web browsers, specifically Google Chrome and Opera, both excellent web browsers. The reason for not picking them is that Google Chrome feels – in many regards – like a beta browser with its missing extension support in the release versions while Opera’s way of handling extensions is not optimal for a good workflow. And Firefox is the only web browser that comes with extensions that we do not want to live without anymore, namely the security extension No Script, the password manager Last Pass, Greasemonkey and several SEO extensions.

Mozilla Firefox homepage

2. Desktop Email Client Thunderbird

Another sure pick for us. There are different email clients that work under Windows 7 with the most popular ones being Windows Live Mail (formerly Outlook Express), Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird with the first and third being free to use.

Some users might prefer to use an online email service like Yahoo Mail, Hotmail or Gmail instead. Our reason for sticking with a desktop email client are the following:

Ability to access emails offline

Ability to use different email providers and servers from one email client

Thunderbird offers the same advantage that Firefox offers: Extension support. There are hundreds of extensions for the email client which can increase the functionality tremendously.

Mozilla Thunderbird homepage

3. Media Player SMPlayer

Microsoft has really improved the media playback capabilities and other features of Windows Media Player. Especially the ability to playback additional video file types over previous Windows systems and the Media Player lite interface while playing videos are two features that increase the value of the player. One still has to install different codecs to be able to view unsupported video file types.

That’s where SMPlayer comes into play. The player uses binary codecs which are shipped with the media player. These codecs work out of the box and nearly every different video format is supported by this MPlayer variant.

SMPlayer homepage

4. FTP, sFTP and SCP client WinSCP

Webmasters need a way to upload, download and manage files that are hosted at a web hosting company. The usual way to do that is to connect to the web server with an ftp, sftp or scp client. WinSCP combines all three possibilities in an explorer like interface. It offers several additional features including Windows integration, integrated text editor, batch file scripting or sessions making it one of the few all-in-one clients for the Windows operating system.

WinSCP website

5. Feed reader FeedDemon

There are two basic options for selecting a feed reader. It can either be an online feed reader like Google Reader or a desktop feed reader. There are a lots of programs that offer desktop feed reading capabilities. This ranges from web browsers like Firefox or Opera over email clients like Outlook or Thunderbird to applications that have been specifically designed for the purpose like Feed Demon.

FeedDemon offers a comfortable way of reading news feeds. It comes with a lot of options that most other integrated feed reading solutions do not offer including the ability to create watchlists to monitor specific keywords. Many integrated solutions, like that in Firefox, felt like they were slowing down the web browser once a certain threshold was reached.

FeedDemon homepage

6. Data encryption software True Crypt

Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise come with the Bitlocker data encryption feature that can be used to encrypt data in those operating systems. All other editions of Windows 7 do not offer this feature. The alternative is True Crypt, a reliable data encryption software that can be used to create encrypted containers, partitions and even full systems.

True Crypt comes with an incredible set of features including:

Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.

Parallelization and pipelining allow data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted.

Provides plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password: Hidden volume (steganography) and hidden operating system.

Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Mode of operation: XTS.

True Crypt homepage

7. Image viewer XnView

XnView is a fast image viewer for the Windows operating system supporting over 400 different image formats. It works extremely well even when viewing images in folders with thousands of images. It does offer basic image editing features like rotating images or exporting images in more than 50 different image formats, batch editing and renaming, slideshows or filter and effects. Another feature is Twain and WIA support.

XnView website

8. Image editor Paint .net

Windows Paint was redesigned by Microsoft in Windows 7. It now comes with a ribbon interface and improved functionality. It still lacks many of the features that most users would expect from an image editor. That’s where paint.net comes into play. The image editor loads fast and offers an advanced functionality that does not need to fear comparison with other solutions like GIMP or Photoshop.

Paint.net homepage

9. Text editor Notepad++

Notepad is a fast opening text editor in Windows. It is great for editing smaller text files but lacks features that make it as good when it comes to larger files or scripting languages like php. Notepad++ is an enhanced – but unrelated – Notepad clone that offers many interesting features including syntax highlighting, multi-document support, regular expressions, macros, plugins and auto completion. Best of all, it opens as quickly as Notepad in the operating system.

Notepad++ homepage

10. CD and DVD burning software ImgBurn

Windows 7 comes with advanced image burning options. It can for example burn ISO images without additional software, something that other Windows operating systems don’t offer. A third party CD and DVD burning software is on the other hand still a requirement for burning other image formats and creating custom data, audio and video CDs and DVDs.

ImgBurn is a free solution that is slightly more complex to use than many of the other burning software programs. It is however one of the most reliable and feature rich programs available for the Windows operating system and therefor our first choice when it comes to installing a third party burning software.

ImgBurn homepage

11. Audio player AIMP2

It is possible to play most audio formats in Windows Media Player. Users who prefer alternatives usually pick Winamp. AIMP2 is an alternative that comes with an excellent set of features and options. Chance is that if Winamp can do it AIMP2 can as well. The audio player is lightweight and uses less system resources than Winamp.

AIMP2 website

12. PDF reader Foxit Reader

Windows 7 users need to install a third party software to be able to view pdf documents. The natural choice for most is Adobe’s PDF reader. Experienced users on the other hand prefer different programs. This can be mainly attributed to the performance of Adobe Reader and security concerns.

One of the most popular alternatives is the Foxit Reader which opens PDFs much faster than Adobe Reader does.

After using many different image and photo editors over the years including other free ones like GIMP but also commercial applications like Adobe Photoshop I discovered one that I have been using ever since. Paint.net is an image editor for the Windows operating system which combines the attributes that I value the most: Speed and Ease of use. Most of the other image editors that I tried out where slow to load and quite complex to use. Not so Paint.net which loads up almost as fast as the default Windows Paint application but offers a lot that Paint does not offer.

Is it comparable to Gimp or Adobe Photoshop? I honestly cannot say so and do not care the least. It allows me to do the image editing things that I need to do which are basic image manipulations, e.g. resizing, copying, pasting, and basic editing.

Paint.net 3.5 final was released today. Users who are interested in the changes in this release can take a look at the post over at the official blog to find out more about them. Those that do not care about that can download the latest version of the image editor from the developer’s website where it is available for all supported operating systems (Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7) and languages. Paint.net, as the name suggests, requires the Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 SP1.

Many programs for the Windows operating system need so called runtimes so that they can execute correctly on the computer system. Two of the most popular runtimes are the Microsoft .net Framework and the Java Runtime Environment. Some programs check for missing runtimes and provide options to install them while others do not which usually leads to some research in the readme or on the developer’s homepage to find out if the program has any dependencies that need to be installed on the PC before the software can be used.

All In One Runtime offers an efficient (critics would probably call it unnecessary or overkill) solution to the problem. The program checks the installed runtimes of the Windows operating system and will automatically display and install the runtimes that are not installed on the PC system.

The supported runtimes are:

Microsoft .net Frameworks

.net language packs

System runtimes

Visual C++ runtimes

Microsoft Visual J#

Adobe Flash Player

Microsoft Silverlight

Shockwave Player

Java Runtime Environment

DirectX

The program will display the runtimes that it intends to install. A 30 second countdown will be displayed allowing the user to pause and cancel the installation or remove runtimes from the installation. All In One Runtime is a portable software program for Microsoft Windows operating systems. Supported are 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. The download is available on a German website. The developer’s website is also only available in German.

Chance is that the majority of friends, colleagues and relatives do not make use of the full HD TV technology yet. DVD sales do still top Blu-Ray sales by a large margin and it is not likely that this is going to chance anytime soon. But Blu-Ray is obviously not the only technology benefiting from full HD resolutions. TV stations all over the world are slowly (depending on your location very very slowly) beginning to offer HD TV. With all that said it feels surprising that TV developers are already showcasing the next generation of TVs that offer four times the resolution of full HD displays.

The so called 4K standard offers a resolution of 3840×2160 which equals four times the resolution of the current full HD standard. This would theoretically mean that the 4K TV is capable of displaying four full HD screens at the same time.

Panasonic for example showcased their new 4K TV at the Ceatec convention in Japan last month. Other companies like Sony also showcased their 4K TVs already.

But who needs such a display? There are definitely some uses in the high-end professional market but what about end users? The main culprit here is that end users won’t have anything to watch or play on these devices for a very long time. Especially considering that the full HD standard has not even reached a critical level of distribution. But then again, who needs 4K if the next standard called Ultra High-Definition Video (with a proposed resolution of 7,680 × 4,320) is already in development?

What’s your opinion on the matter?

Thunderbird day today? Not sure about that but today is the day where two interesting new add-ons have been posted at the Thunderbird website. The first was the add-on that increased the mass mailing functionality in the web browser. The Unsubscribe From Mailing Lists add-on does exactly that. It provides an option to unsubscribe from mailing lists from withing the email client. A feature similar to the one that Gmail is offering to its users for some time now.

The process is very simply. The Thunderbird add-on will automatically display an option to unsubscribe from support mailing lists in the header of the emails that are send to the accounts that are managed in the desktop email client.

The Thunderbird user needs to click on the unsubscribe link in the header to initiate the process of unsubscribing from the mailing lists. This will display a prompt informing the user that the add-on will open a new email message which, when send by the user, will unsubscribe the email address from the mailing list.

The email usually consists of an email address of the service that send the mailing list email and subject unsubscribe in the email subject with no body text at all. The unsubscribe link is only displayed for mailing lists that use the Inxmail email marketing service which is used by global brands such as Coca Cola. The add-on is compatible with Thunderbird 2 and Thunderbird 3 up to beta 3 which excludes the latest release of Thunderbird 3 beta. The add-on can however be forced to be compatible with the Nightly Tester Tools. A download is available at the Thunderbird website over at Mozilla.

The desktop email client Thunderbird does offer mass mailing capabilities by default. It is possible to add multiple recipients for an email. Problems appear however if the number of recipients is extremely large (more than 100 for example) and if the individual recipients should not see the other recipients that received the email. The second problem can be tackled by adding each recipient in the BCC (blind carbon copy) field and a personal email address in the To field. The first problem can be solved by writing multiple emails below the maximum recipient per email limit. Both solutions increase the workload of the user writing the emails. They also make it more difficulty to keep track of the process as the user now has to handle multiple emails instead of just one.

Mail Merge is an experimental Thunderbird add-on that increases the email client’s mass mailing capabilities. It does so by introducing two new options to the email software: Mass Mail and Personal Mail.

Mass Mail

Mass Mail is ingenious. The user writing the email starts by writing one email that should be send out to all recipients. This includes the title, body and possible attachments. Then all recipients are added to that email in the appropriate fields. A click on the Mass Mail button (available under File > Mass Mail) will now create individual emails for each email recipient and put them in the outbox of the email client. Each recipient will therefor get an individual email message so that no other email addresses appear in the mail header.

Personal Mail

One problem of the Mass Mail approach is that the emails cannot address the individual. Adding Hej Frank to a mass mail would send that greeting to all other recipients as well. That’s where Personal Mail comes into play. Personal Mail makes use of variables and csv files to address individuals in mass mailings. Variables can be added to any field in the email in the form {{Variable}}. It is for instance possible to write an email like the following:

To: {{Mail}}
Subject: {{ID}}: Notification
Body: Hi {{Name}}, this email …

The selection of File > Personal Mail after writing the email will open a dialog with the mandatory option to load a csv file containing the information. The developer does not describe how the csv should look like and I was not able to figure it out on my own. Users who would like to make use of that feature might want to contact the developer directly. The email address is published at the Mozilla Thunderbird page of the add-on. Mail Merge is compatible with both Thunderbird 2 and 3 and can be downloaded from the official Mozilla website.

Several web services exist that allow visitor to make their own business cards. Some of these services are free while the majority of them is not. Paid and free services differ highly in regards to customizability and ease of use. Make Business Cards is a free service that offers enough customization to make it interesting for many users who are looking for a good business card generator. The service does not offer many design choices: It basically comes down to one design that can be customized with a logo or graphic, different font types and text.

The process of creating a business card consists of three basic steps. A graphic is added in step one. This is done by pasting an url in the web form at the top of the generator. The developer of the script suggests using a clipart repository if no custom image is available. This place is usually filled by a company logo.

The user then selects a font from the three available ones (Helvetica, Times, Courier) which will be used for the text of the business card. Up to ten lines of text can then be added and aligned on the business card. Font weight and size can be customized individually for each line of text.

A click on the Make Business Cards button at the bottom of the screen will generate a pdf document containing one sheet with twelve of the custom business cards on it. This pdf document can then be printed to create the business cards. Users interested in making their own business cards can visit the website to create their own in less than five minutes.

Do you know other resources to make your own business cards? If so let us know in the comments.

A popular feature in modern web browsers is the session management. These web browsers can be configured to display the very same websites that were displayed before closing the web browser in the previous browsing session. A similar option for the Windows operating system is not available by default. That is where the Cache My Work software programs steps in.

The program will display a list of programs on startup that can be restarted in the next Windows session. All the user needs to do is to place a checkmark next to any program that should be started again on the next Windows startup.

The program makes use of the run once key in the Windows Registry to launch these applications again. What this means is that while the programs will be launched the last session in the applications will not unless the application itself support sessions. This means that it is possible to launch a web browser like Firefox with the tabs open that have been open during the last session. Applications like Notepad, Adobe Photoshop or Word on the other hand will be launched with blank screens instead.

Cache My Work can also remember the open Windows Explorer windows to recreate them on the next start of the operating system. The program is intuitive to use and should not pose any problems even to inexperienced users. Interested users can download the program from its Codeplex profile page. (via Download Squad)

The Form Letter Machine can be a helpful software program for users who want to automate the generation of targeted letters. It does so by offering options to configure paragraphs that are set in a distinct order (by grouping items) in the program. It is for instance possible to add different introductions, closing lines and middle parts to the program. A letter could then be generated by simply selecting the pre-written paragraphs that fit in the specific case.

Groups can consist of radioboxes or checkboxes. Only one paragraph can be selected per group if radioboxes are selected while checkboxes allow the selection of multiple paragraphs.

The example above consists of three groups with two of the groups using radioboxes and one checkboxes. Here is what Mouser has to say about his program:

The Form Letter Machine is a program that will help you to write letters and emails by mixing and matching from pre-written paragraphs.

It’s useful for people who regularly need to send out emails which include different components in different circumstances. For example if you field technical support requests, or if you need to reply to various inquiries, etc.

It enables you to assemble text from multiple paragraphs, each one customized for a specific type of inquiry or response. You can build your own configurations using checkboxes and radioboxes and nested groups, and then easily write new letters or respond to inquiries by checking off the components you want to include. A real-time preview allows you to view the message as it is composed. The program also supports user defined variables, which allows you to quickly personalize the template with a name or other data that is specific to the task. The text is then copied to the clipboard and can be used in your e-mail program or word processor.

One interesting option is the use of variables in texts (for names and other parameters that might change). Variables can be easily defined in the interface and filled with values which appear instantly in the text.

Mouser has created a website for the program which is a repository for user generated form letters that can be used in the software program. The Form Letter Machine is available for download at the Donation Coder website.

One of the most prominent features of Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 7 is the taskbar which its new functionality. The new features include the ability to pin programs to the taskbar, display thumbnail previews of open windows and tabs (for example from Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer or the latest version of the Firefox web browser) and jumplists that offer quick links to application specific features.

The free software program Windows 7 Taskbar Tweaker is a portable application for the Windows 7 operating system. It can be used to modify several of the default options of the Windows 7 taskbar, to be precise:

Right-click on a taskbar item to either display jumplists (default) or the standard window menu

Change grouping from grouping applications to not grouping them

Change dropping items to the taskbar from pinning them to opening them

Change the middle-click behavior from opening a new program instance to either closing the window or focusing the window

Change left-click on grouped item button from opening the thumbnail preview to cycling through the windows.

Disable the thumbnail preview

The new settings become available after clicking on the apply button in the program window. The software program is available for download at the developer’s website for both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows 7 operating system.

Chance is that your Internet Service Provider has implemented a system that will display a search page whenever a url gets mistyped. The technique behind those interceptions is simple. Most Internet users make use of the DNS servers of their Internet Service Providers. These DNS servers turn the names that the users type in into IP addresses. If the name does not exist then the DNS servers cannot perform that lookup usually resulting in a “not found” or “problem loading page” error in the web browser. Some ISPs have decided to route all requests that cannot be looked up to a page of their own which most of the time displays search results for the term along with advertisement.

The reason for doing this is simple: cash. ISPs earn money if you come to those search pages and use them to find what you are looking for. More often than not those search pages are not helpful at all. Here is why. Most of the time users know where they want to go if they mistype a url, say ghackss.net instead of ghacks.net. All that they would need to do to fix the error is by editing the url.

The page that the provider displays on the other hand uses a different url structure leaving the user with the only valid option to enter the url again in the address bar of the web browser. It would be possible to edit the url of the new page as well as it usually contains the entered domain name as a search term somewhere at the end.

Users with Internet Service Providers that redirect DNS errors have a few choices. Some ISPs have a page where the behavior can be changed manually. A second alternative would be to switch DNS servers. Again, some ISPs offer DNS servers that do not take part in those redirects but it is also viable to switch to open DNS server providers that do not redirect DNS errors.

The third option comes in the form of the No Redirect add-on for the Firefox web browser. The add-on is only suited for advanced users as it requires basic knowledge of regular expression to configure new Internet Service Providers. It comes with a few pre-configured including Verizon, Rogers and Earthlink but if the ISP is not among them it would be necessary to add the search page to the list of available ones. This is not as difficulty as it sounds though as it is possible to simply copy and edit the regular expression of the already included service providers and websites.

If the ISP is added properly the default “problem loading page” or “not found” page will be displayed instead of the redirected search page of the ISP. The main benefit of this is that it is now easy to edit the url that has been entered to visit the desired website.

No Redirect not only takes care of Internet Service Provider redirects but also to stop so called smart error pages. Smart error pages are used by some websites instead of the usual 404 error pages when a page cannot be found. You might have seen those at Microsoft.com for example where Microsoft displays all kind of “did you mean” information instead of an error message.

The final option – one which I was not able to get working – is the ability to always preview shortened urls. If anyone gets this working let us know in the comments.

NoRedirect is an interesting add-on for users who are using the Firefox web browser and are experiencing DNS error redirects or smart error pages that they do not want to see.
