Revolutionary new web 2.0 app that does absolutely nothing!

I have to say this is the most ingenious app I have ever seen. Download Nada to feel better, while it does nothing for you too! Nada promises to be light on hard drive usage, light on memory, not weigh you down with unnecessary features, a dream come true.

Nada 0.5 is a 1kb download, upgraded from Nada 0.9. According to the developers they will have Nada 0.0 out by the end of the year, not much more to go then! Take a look at just one of the coolest features, compatibility is at the heart of this piece of software ingenuity:

“Can I (not) use NaDa™ on an old computer ?
Sure. NaDa™ is compatible with any hardware you can imagine. For example, NaDa™ does nothing on Ze PowerSuitcase, Ze Cube (Think Clear!) or on the >SE/30-TV.”

Selectively deleting entries from you Firefox history

Selectively deleting your history entries seems like something you do in adolescence and while I hope I may help my young friends in this area, my reason for wanting to do this is to un-clutter my history.

If you visit a video on Youtube often for example, you will have a hard time just typing “you” in the address bar and finding it in the list, since people generally visit a lot of videos. There is a way that you can clean these from the history (and stuff you don’t want Mom and Dad to see).

Martin has done a post previously on finding visited URL’s through the index.dat file for Internet Explorer, now I would venture to add to that a bit by expanding it to Firefox, and suggesting a way of editing the document to your needs. Here we go:

Easily create and maintain a website with Doodlekit

I have to say that I really hate website builders, I even hate WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) HTML editors. These tools are inflexible, create laughably complex website codes and are just a pain to work with. That said, I think I found one web service that could turn the tide a bit, and give people true freedom, without having to learn all this mumbo-jumbo.

Doodlekit is a website builder/maintainer. The reason I like it so much is that it really does give you a lot of tools. It doesn’t just throw a template at you, allow you to upload pics and walk off and job well done. The free version will give you full W3C compliance (valid HTML and CSS), interchangeable templates, statistics, photo albums, sub-page management, blogs, searches and CSS override features, for budding web designers.

It also does this in style, cute graphics and a friendly tone will at least cheer you up. They provide a wealth of info, even before you sign up, and although I haven’t gone as far as trying the paid service, they seem like a friendly bunch of people over there, trying to give you the best service they can. If you want the paid version, they give you a lot of extras.

Send SMS to your Girlfriend/Spouse for free with Google Calendar

I have to admit, I’m not the cheapskate, I don’t try dodging costs and I don’t employ the technique described here, but it is a fairly easy way to get rid of SMS expenses once and for all. There are numerous ways to minimize mobile costs nowadays, I have a “family pack”, which means that if I buy more than one SIM card, I can call that card any time for free, it only costs about a flat $4 a month. Sadly, this doesn’t include SMS.

As we all know, Google Calendar has the option to send free SMS reminders of tasks. Now all you need is to set up a calendar for your significant other using your own phone as a reminder, and one for yourself, with his/her phone number. Set the default reminder to SMS, for 5 minutes before the event takes place

Now if you want to send her an SMS, just create an event, and write the text as the “What” text. Set the event about 10 minutes ahead to be safe, and save. Sadly only 60 characters will be shown in the SMS, but this is still enough for a quick message. You can create events 1 minute apart and have 3 events span a single SMS if you want. You will have a “reminder” sent to your partner, quickly and for free!

Google Reader ads recommended feeds

While trying to find and all-in-one feed reader solution I got frustrated and decided to go with the simple and the best, Google Reader. While it doesn’t sport the sleekest, most awesome web 2.0 design I’ve ever seen it is clean and usable. I have just discovered a new link added, “discover”, which shows you recommended feeds.

I’m always a skeptic when it comes to automatic recommendations, I probably get the weirdest results you’ve ever seen, but the one built into Reader is great. I am subscribed to a lot of tech blogs like gHacks, and it did show me many more like it (of course neither one could compete with the super-awesomeness of gHacks).

A great bonus is that it is compatible with different languages. I have a subscription to the largest Hungarian news portal, and it recommended about 3-4 of the other big ones, which is pretty darned impressive in my opinion. If this wasn’t enough, they introduced another welcome addition besides this.

Remember The Milk – to do with so much more

I have to say, that while I love web 2.0 applications and shiny new things, I rarely actually adopt them for the long term. I usually find that it needs this one small thing I would love, so I just scratch the whole idea. This is not so with Remember The Milk, hands down my favorite webapp of all time.

At first I turned my back, the name sounded to wacky to back a useful product. Just pop the hood and you’ll see how wrong I am. Remember The Milk is an advanced to-do list manager with smart searches, geo tagging (awesome), tags, list sharing, list publication, adding tasks by email, the list just goes on and on.

If you just need a simple to-do list it will do fine, but if you are a GTD freak, I believe you could still set it up so that it accommodates your needs. It has some shortcomings (you can’t share smart lists, no nested lists), but just put it up on the suggestion board (I already have) and if it’s popular, you have a good chance of it getting in.

Hello from a new guest blogger

Hi everyone! My name is Daniel Pataki and I am honored and excited to be able to introduce myself as a guest poster for the awesome gHacks.

I am a 22 year old hyperactive guy, who never seems to want to stop (sleep be damned!). My main interests are playing guitar and singing, I’ve been doing that for more than seven years now, and running my new site, Hack Your Day. Apart from that I love photography, bowling, badmington, handcraft things and of course Ice Tea.

My specialty in posting is mostly productivity, ways to use our everyday software better, web 2.0 and ways to better ourselves (positive thinking, and so on). I hope I can add to the already great posts by Martin, stay tuned, and happy reading to all of you!
