Nvidia released a new driver for its video card on Friday, and it turned out quickly that the driver caused all kinds of issues on Windows 10 machines.

When it comes to the installation of new drivers, display drivers or others, it is usually a good idea to wait a couple of days before you install them on one of your computers.

If you have the means, it is usually best to test the driver on a test system to make sure it will likely run fine on production machines as well.

Nvidia's Geforce Game Ready Driver 375.57 driver comes with optimizations for Battlefield 1, Civilization VI and the soon to be released Titanfall 2. Considering that the driver brings along with it optimizations for these much anticipated and popular games, it was no surprise that gamers started to download and install the Nvidia Geforce Game Ready Driver 375.57 on their machines to take advantage of it.

Especially users on Windows 10 PCs noticed shortly thereafter that the driver was causing all kinds of issues on their system.

Some symptoms observed by Windows 10 users was that Windows Store apps started to crash, that drag and drop operations in the Start Menu did not work as intended and were causing issues, and that videos and animated GIFs were showing artifacts.

Nvidia did release Geforce Game Ready Driver 375.63 shortly thereafter which fixed those issues. It is already offered on the official Nvidia website and the Geforce website where it has replaced the defect driver. If you thought that is the end of the story, you are mistaken.

If you run Nvidia's Geforce Experience software, you know that it is the primary tool on many machines to update drivers.

Turns out, the tool is still offering version 375.57 for download, and not the newer version of the driver that fixed the issues that users experienced.

It is unclear why the older driver is still listed in the application and not the newer one. Users who operate PCs with Nvidia video cards should download and install Nvidia drivers manually from the website, and not use Geforce Experience for that. This is especially true for users on Windows 10 PCs, but users on machines running older versions of Windows should do the same as it provides them with an up to date driver.

Geforce Experience was in the news recently as the latest version of the software made user registration mandatory. This is just another reason why you may want to avoid the program. While it offers simple configurations for games -- that sometimes work and other times don't -- it offers nothing in that regard that you cannot do directly in the game as well.

You will also eliminate another background service that runs all the time on your PC.

This NVIDIA thing was suddenly installed on my laptop (Windows 10). I think it has caused my laptop to overheat and worked slower, especially when watching Youtube. Can one delete this program? Will delelting affect my laptop negatively?

Yes. 375.86 was another bad driver (for some setups, like MSI/INNO3D/W10).
I strongly discourage anyone that for whatever reason wants to install it. Don’t.

After the last nvidia driver update I suddenly noticed that video playback on youtube has artifacts – it has black patches and heavy pixelation when starting playback of every video, and after the first few frames it normalizes. I have version 375.63. Hopefully, the latest update will solve the issues.

I’m on 375.70 and I’m still having artifacts on animated gifs, which is what led me to google and find this thread…

I’ve also had the problem of not being able to access the start menu or basically any programs, but that’s intermittent and sometimes works after a reboot…

if it’s all indeed linked to nvidia, I sure hope they work it out soon…

I’ve just had this problem and am trying to sort it out now.

My start menu and cortana are inaccessible, and the restore point I created before the save will not load.

Add to that, despite internet being connected and aging so, my internet browsers state that I am offline!

Open msconfig.exe and in the “services” find anything with “nvidia” and try to shut them off one at the time. That should help. If not, you can always turn them back on.

With the driver version, 375.63, my machine with Windows 8.1 64bit starts to have problems – right after I finished the installation of 375.63 on Monday, 25, 2016:
    – The machine becomes very slow to start, hanging at black screen much longer than before.
    – Once login to the Windows, the real headache starts: mouse cursor keeps spinning, pausing, and re-spinning. The symptom won’t stop, even I reinstalled 375.63 second time. The cursor has been spinning for over 24 hours until I reinstalled with a very early driver, 326.83, found from the PC manufacture’s website.

Same thing! I checked my system for viruses with two antiviruses four times (two of them from safe mod) yesterday, and nothing! I even tried to re-install Windows, but with no success. In the end I stumbled on one old forum, where someone said that he solved such thing by shutting off one of the nvidia services, so I tried to shut them all one by one. The bad one was the third – nvidia local system container service. So I shut it off for good, and everything returned to normal. No Geforce Experience, sure, but also no pain.

I’ve been running 375.57 without the Geforce Experience app or the 3d drivers on my 64bit Windows 10 machine. I’ve had zero problems.

the registration part really sucks why should i have to register just to have auto updating driver step backwards this is.

windows 10 has enough problems with drivers on its own without having bad drivers from nvidia i saw a live stream bsod just the other day windows 10 had a issue with nvidia that just randomly happens to the streamers brand new windows 10 pre-installed pc

I remember that you have the option to change settings for specific purposes: games, 3D content creation and so on.

What about “nvdisplay.container.exe” – nVidia Display Container. Anyone knows what this is about? Do we need it for something?
No resource found on your other thread Martin. This service also has nvxdsync attached to it i think

The service powers the Control Panel link when you right-click on the desktop. Not sure if other functionality is impacted, have not noticed anything so far.

I too noticed nvdisplay.container.exe and so far all my investigations have turned up very little, what’s concerning me is i suspect it’s related to The Geforce Experience.

There is indeed little information. Some have said that it is just a renamed service (Helper service) that powers the control panel link in the context menu.

You are several days late with this, and even so, this bad driver has been pulled and replaced, so people reading your warning literally cannot install the bad one.

The Geforce Experience client is still offering the download.
