Giganews Usenet Reaches 1200 Days Retention

I have to admit that I’m pretty biased when it comes to Giganews and Usenet access in specific. I have been a happy Giganews customer for years, even though I pay a premium price for a premium service. Giganews did a lot to improve their service and product in past years. I’m talking about the VPN service that Diamond account owners get for free, or the soon to be released file hosting service Dump Truck which will feature 256 Kbit encryption and no file size or transfer speed limitations.

But Giganews has not only added other services, they have also constantly improved the retention, performance and quality of their core service. The company just a few days ago reached 1200 days of retention for all binary newsgroups. This basically means that Giganews customers have access to information and files that date back almost three and a half year. That’s a big milestone, especially since all those information and files are accessible with the same performance and completion rate (that is 100%).

I honestly cannot say if the 1200 days of retention are more than any other Usenet provider offers, or if the upload and download speeds are faster. It would be very difficulty to prove, considering that you would need accounts with all comparable services on the Internet.

What I do know is that I’m a happy customer. When I download, I max my 50 Mbit connection every time, and I have the feeling that I would also max faster connections.

The most interesting account package is the Diamond package in my opinion. The reason for this is not because of the unlimited Usenet downloads or SSL connections, as other packages offer that as well. The core reason is the free VPN that you get with the package. VyprVPN has servers in several countries that you can connect to, including the United States, United Kingdom and France. If you are not sure what you can do with it, check out this article: Use VyprVPN To Access US-Only Websites or check out the core service review here. As a webmaster, the service is indispensable, for instance to check how your site is ranking in search engines.

The price is still higher than at comparable Usenet providers. If you do not need a VPN or another of the free services you may want to look at the Platinum account instead which is available for $10 less.

Are you making use of the Usenet? If so, what’s the provider and software that you are using?

giganews has been overpriced for awhile. thats the main reason i quit in the first place
even with the vpn, its still too expensive.
please note that when i quit the price was 30$.. so now, 35$ is just way too much in my opinion.. insane i would say. perhaps when they release dump truck, and if its any good things will balance a bit but i highly doubt it

as it stands now, you can get EVERYTHING they offer for a better price. including vpn, nsp and online storage

vyprvpn sucks because they keep logs and do not allow p2p(not sure about this. correct me if wrong) check https://torrentfreak.com/which-vpn-providers-really-take-anonymity-seriously-111007/

nsp well.. all of them are cheaper.. even resellers which is basically giganews with another name since they use the same servers. with 12$ month you get unlimited traffic, 1191 days retention, 30ssl connections servers in europe and us

online storage which giganews still doesnt have. atm you can get 100gb for 10$month or 60gb for 10$ depending on providers. these are TOP companies in their field with things like: encryption, sync software, 2factor authentication, mobile support etc

    lets see,
10$ vpn which does not log
    12$ nsp 1190 days
    10$ 100gb
thats 32$ and remember dump truck is still not available. when it is, its probably going to be crap for the first half year, just like vyprvpn was for many months.

so.. i cant see ONE single reason to chose giganews over these other providers which are specialized in their field, better, above everything else are cheaper.

    • You know, I could not agree more. That may sound strange, but I do see that big price difference. Even if you go for the Platinum account, which gives you the same speeds and retention but not the extra services, you pay about $10 more than on comparable Usenet providers.

Then again, I cannot say anything about the services that you have recommended.

As far as the vpn goes, I never tried to use it for P2P so cannot say anything about that. I only use it for webmaster related tasks and for that it is very nice and comfortable to use. Plus, you get to choose different protocols and access to a NAT firewall.

BinTube is the service I use, you can use 20 connections unlimited speeds and it has SSL right now it is at 1193 days retention and always increasing 11 bucks a month plus the fact that you can start watching movies as soon as you start downloading it’s all I need

I used Giganews for almost 5 years without issues and loved them , but the price was a factor. I foudn out about supernews, a giganews reseller. the front end is identical to giganews, just a different banner. they gave me the same access I used to have with Diamond, ( I did not need the VPN) for just $9 a month, since then at least half a dozen pals have also switched.

I normally use Altopia, their binaries retention is not as good as the one you mention, but at $6/month for unlimited data transfer I think it is excellent value for money.

I also have a block account that never expires with Astraweb, and their retention is well over a year, much cheaper than Giganews, I think they are hard to afford.
