July 2011 was the first month were I realized that it has become incredibly difficulty to keep track of browser releases from the top four or five developers. I could not possibly write about every beta, aurora, nightly, dev, canary or snapshot build out there and made the decision to reduce the coverage to the following: I review stable versions and versions that introduce new and exciting features.
It is especially frustrating at the moment to keep track of the development of the Firefox browser. More so than it is with Google’s Chrome, as Mozilla supports older versions of the browser which Google does not. So what’s in store for us in August? We will see Firefox 3.6.20, Firefox 6, Firefox 7 Beta 1 and Firefox 8 Aurora all released on August 16. That’s five releases on one day.
Lets look back at July. I received flak from some readers (who commented once and never came back) for my mini web investment series (why website investments are better than stock market investments and 8 essential tips for web investors).
Global news were dominated by Google Plus and Facebook. Facebook introduced video calling and group chat in July, and Google unlimited photo hosting on Picasa.
We have seen Java 7 released, read an analysis that banks were the best approach to hinder the operation of scammers and spammers on the Internet, and that Microsoft would unveil Windows 8 in September.
Hardware
We do not do lots of hardware reviews here. This can be largely attributed to the fact that we do not get a lot of review samples. Mike got two from Samsung last month, and my review of the wireless headset was based on my own purchase.
