Microsoft Pushes Out Second Internet Explorer 10 Preview

Microsoft has switched into full gear and is now releasing new versions of the Internet Explorer on a regular basis. That’s good for the Internet as a whole, and especially good for Windows users who work with the system’s default browser.

Not a lot of time has passed since the release of Internet Explorer 9. Microsoft is nevertheless working on the browser’s successor. Internet Explorer 10 has been released recently in a preview version. The browser, that is supposedly shipping with Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 8, improves Internet Explorer 9 in several areas.

The interface resembles that of the Internet Explorer 9 previews that Microsoft released previously. Users get no address bar for instance. The preview has been designed specifically for web developers and companies to give them an early version of the upcoming browser that they can validate and test.

Internet Explorer 10 introduces several new technologies including HTML5 form support, HTML5 drag and drop, file reader api, CSS3 Gradients, Forms Validation, Web Workers and CSS3 Positioned Floats. When you load the HTML5 test you will notice that Internet Explorer 10 scores almost twice the points that IE9 scores. The jump from 141+5 points to 231+6 is remarkable and long overdue. While it still means that Internet Explorer 10 is scoring less than its browser competitors, it outlines that Microsoft is inclined to improve compatibility.

The JavaScript performance is on pair, even slightly better, than that of Chrome, Opera or Firefox. But that’s a difference of about 20 milliseconds, which means that all browsers are pretty close in this area.

Security wise, Microsoft has added HTML5 Sandbox and frame isolation support to the browser. Internet Explorer 10 is not the first to support the sandbox though, Google Chrome supports that feature as well.

While Microsoft is improving the Internet Explorer browser significantly, the browser is still lacking some features that web developers and users want implemented. Among them support for CSS3 text shadows, CSS animations or web sockets.

Web devs and users interested in the latest version of Internet Explorer 10 find download links and additional information on Microsoft’s official IEBlog.
