Windows 7 has been out for more than 12 months and it is already clear that it is a huge success, not only for Microsoft but also for users who switch to the new operating system. The majority of computer users are still using a different system, and it will take additional time before they make the switch.
Those who have plans to install Windows 7 on their next computer, or buy it preinstalled, probably want to know what’s new and changed before they dive into the water.
Enter the free ebook Windows 7, The Pocket Guide, which can be downloaded after filling out a form on our partner site Tradepub.
The page there does not offer that many information about the contents of the ebook. Here is an overview of what is addressed in the guide:

- Backup your date: How to backup and restore files and the windows Registry, create a System Recovery Disk, recover lost data.
- Security: Selection of compatible antivirus, antispyware and firewall programs. Taking ownership, using True Crypt to encrypt data, ad blocker for web browsers, privacy in Windows Media Player.

The guide is well written and contains only a few web links. It is interesting that free solutions are recommended whenever possible. The author recommends for instance ImgBurn, Gparted or TrueCrypt in the guide.

While free offers are a nice thing in general, they ask for a little too much private information in this case, IMO (full address, phone number). Also, everybody beware that the form has the “Yes, please auto-fill my contact information for other qualification forms.” option checked by default. I’ll pass this one, but sincere thanks nevertheless.
In my opinion Windows 7 is a huge fail. After a year it should have had at least 50% of Windows market, but it has around 20% and nearly not-to-be-seen in the Organization market.
FYI: As per DynDNS Internet Guide – “Hostname windows7news.tradepub.com is blocked in your defense plan. This is a known “Advertisements and Pop-ups” web site which is blocked as specified by your Defense Plan. This site points to scaler01-tradepub08.netline.com, which is Advertisements and Pop-ups.” I’ve Whitelisted it in my DynDNS account, so no biggie. Thanks!
I’m with you David – a ‘little’ too much personal information? Make that one hell of a lot too much personal information! Are these guys serious? I’d as soon pay for a book as hand out this kind of personal info.
