Chromium 9 Released

The first version 9 Chromium builds have appeared today on the build server, marking yet another big version jump for the web browser. Another? Yes, if you follow the development of Chromium you know that the browser was bumped to version 8 just two weeks ago.

Google mentioned earlier that they would accelerate the release schedule but this fast? If they continue this release cycle they are release Chromium 13 by year’s end.

So what’s new in this new version of the browser? Not much apparently besides the new version number. If you visit the options you will notice that Chromium is now offering new settings in the Under the Hood options to use SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0, which are not available in the latest Google Chrome 8 dev builds.

The only other new feature is that password sync is now enabled by default if data synchronization has been enabled in the browser.

It took five days last time before Google Chrome was bumped to version 8 after the initial Chromium release. It is likely that we will see the first Google Chrome 9 dev builds in the coming seven days.

What’s your take on the accelerated development cycle? Does it make sense to report on version changes of the browser, or should we concentrate on features instead?

Their accelerated development cycle is a great marketing idea that I’m surprised hasn’t be used before. It seems as though they are getting much more “press” by the rapid version number changes. Lots of press,(as long as it is not very negative), goes a long way to browser market share as it can cause people to give it a try. (Sometimes many times)

  2. Will says:

Stupid. See still be at version 1.

Perhaps 1.0.9 should be the true version.

  3. Hector Macias Ayala says:

Nonsense, should be like 2.0.1 at much.

  4. AM says:

I don’t care at the version number at all, I am interested to know more about the new features that are delivered every stable build.

  5. Visitor says:

It’s wrong idea to accelerate development cycle this way. Developers think and write code as fast as they can but not as Google wants. Also there is 5$ fee for third-party developers of extensions that Google announced in August 2010. What’s going on?

  6. Ahmad says:

I hate this messed up development cycle, very bad idea to accelerate. Google seems to change chrome version numbers like cloths changing. What we get in Chrome 8 Dev??? I need fast draw of web pages and better download manager and much more..

  7. lcdx says:

Probably a marketing ploy to beat IE to version 9
