Opera 10.61 And 10.70, The Next Opera Releases

Opera users who follow the development of the web browser closely may have been confused by the two versions of Opera that are currently developed and offered as snapshots by the development team. Release snapshots by the Opera Desktop Team were alternating between Opera 10.70 and Opera 10.61 releases.

The issue became even more confusing as build numbers did not add up on first glance. Some build numbers of Opera 10.61 releases were higher than those of Opera 10.70 releases.

Confusing to say the least. A recent blog post over at the Opera blog sheds some light on the issue.

Opera is apparently developing two different versions of the browser at the same time. Opera 10.61, the next upcoming release will be a security and bugfix release. It won’t contain new features and a release is imminent.

Opera 10.70 is the major development branch that will introduce new features on top of the security and stability fixes that will be released with Opera 10.61.

This means that we are testing the 10.61 release, and 10.70 in parallel, which may cause some confusion if you look at build numbers. The most recent 10.61 build may have a higher build number than the latest 10.70 build, but that is simply the number assigned to them by the build system. Opera “10.70″ is still the main development branch, while 10.61 is only intended to be a smaller security/bug fix release.

Early adopters can download the second release candidate of Opera 10.61 from the Opera Desktop Team blog. Opera 10.70 is also available for download, and introduces several new features:

This one contains mostly Presto (Core) changes, and there are even a few new features:

HTML5 HashChangeEvent
CSS3 image-fit and image-position
Selection.selectAllChildren

There are also a few optimizations for SVG, improvements to the JavaScript debugger, and we have added the option opera:config#VisitedLink|VisitedLinksState to control :visited (0 – disable :visited, 1 – match same domain only, 2 – enable :visited normally).

There you got it. Opera 10.61 will be released soon, Opera 10.70 in the near future.
