It is hard to explain why the Mozilla Firefox developers are currently maintaining three official release versions of the popular web browsers. Firefox 3.0.x, Firefox 3.5.x and Firefox 3.6.x are all official versions that can be downloaded from the Mozilla website.
Recent plans announced by the developers outline that support for Firefox 3.0 will end in March of this year reducing the number of different versions that are offered to Internet users two three.
A final update is planned for March 30 that will fix several security related issues. Once the update has been released the browser will not receive any new updates and it is recommended to either switch to Firefox 3.5.x or Firefox 3.6.x for security reasons alone.
This decision should free up valuable development resources for the actively developed Firefox branches.
The developers have also announced plans to release update schedules for Firefox 3.5.10 and 3.6.3, the next installments of those browser branches soon. Both releases will contain security fixes. Firefox 3.6.3 might even include out of process plugins as well.
