If you perform a search for notifiers on the Internet you usually find lots of notifiers for Google services such as Gmail, but not so many for comparably popular services from other companies such as Microsoft or Yahoo.

You have to search long and hard to find notifiers for Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail, but when you do, you will find a couple that are working in pretty much the same way as the notifiers for Google products.

Update: Hotmail Notifier is no longer available. We suggest you check out Outlook Notifier Plus for Firefox instead which offers similar functionality.

Hotmail Watcher

Hotmail Watcher is a Firefox add-on that can notify you whenever new email arrives on a linked Hotmail email account. The extension does not need to be configured with the Hotmail username or password, as it takes the information directly from the cookie that Hotmail sets.

All you need to make sure therefore is that you are signed in to your Hotmail account. If you are not, you won't receive any notifications as the extension cannot retrieve the information in this case. This can be an issue if you sign out regularly, or clear cookies stored by Firefox frequently.

So, the first thing you may want to do is go to Hotmail and make sure you are signed in, or sign-in to the account if you are not.

The extension places an icon with a counter listing the number of unread emails in the Firefox status bar upon installation. The counter will be updated as long as the user is logged into the Hotmail account. A left-click on the icon opens the Hotmail website and resets the counter, a right-click displays the add-on's options and a middle click runs a check for new emails right away.

The extension is configured to check every 20 minutes for new emails by default. This can be changed to a time frame between every 5 minutes and every 4 hours. It is furthermore possible to disable the automatic checks, and check only on the user's request.

Sound, display and blink alerts can be displayed to the user whenever new emails have been discovered, and they too can be configured in the extension's context menu settings.

Hotmail Watcher is an experimental add-on for the Firefox web browser that can be downloaded from the Mozilla website.

Please note that the developer has moved the add-on away from the Mozilla Add-ons website to Google Sites. The reason for doing so according to information posted on the page is Mozilla's update policy and the lack of backwards compatibility that goes along with it.

It is highly recommended to go through the source code before you install the extension on the site, as the extension is not verified by Mozilla anymore.
