Avast Antivirus 5 Download [Security]

Avast antivirus is one of the most popular free antivirus software programs for the Windows operating system. It is that popular that Google and Avast decided to make a deal to distribute the products of each other to further increase the market share of the applications.

Google agreed to distribute Avast antivirus in their Google Pack application’s package. Currently Avast is only available for selected languages including German but not English. Avast did replace Norton Security Scan in the language versions of Google Pack it was included. Currently Avast 5.0 Beta is included in those Google Pack downloads.

Avast on the other hand agreed to distribute Google Chrome, the web browser that is developed by Google, with its software.

Avast 5.0 can be downloaded as a free version which does not offer all the options that Avast 5.0 Professional offers like a new sandboxing option, command line controls or push updates.

One of the biggest changes in Avast 5.0 is the new interface plus improvements to the antivirus scanning engine, performance and memory, disk and cpu usage.

The latest beta of Avast 5 can be downloaded from the Avast website. The final version of Avast Antivirus 5.0 is reported to be released very soon and will then be available for download at the official Avast website.

Update:

Avast 5 has been released and is now officially available for download at the Avast website and popular download sites. Google Pack will also be updated shortly with the final version of Avast Antivirus 5.

Avast v.4.8 is still being updated; I suppose it is the last stable.

    • Mike J says:

Well, there is a non-Beta version available, but Alwil doesnt make you take it; you can still update v.4.8. V. 5 installs on top of it, BTW.

      • Mike J says:

I tried v5, but for less than a day. it slowed browsing down noticeably; web pages took an extra 4-5 seconds to open. I uninstalled it (required a reinstall, even using Revo), & went back to 4.8, & things are snappy again.

  12. Lawrence says:

I was using version 4 when I tried to update the virus database and it would not do it unless you install version 5. OK, I did the install. Has new features I liked so was happy until I turned the computer on the next day. Running XP 64 bit, one of the new features of version 5 kicked in at boot time and wiped out two key system files and prevented any future boots. Tried every thing to recover from this including a backup restore out still no boot. after a week of trying to recover windows XP 64-bit, I had to reformat the drive and do a complete new install of windows XP 64-bit and reinstall all my software and backup files. Tried to contact Avast, but due to the free version, there is NO SUPPORT. I had figured out that, the free version you download and install makes you a BATA TESTER. Subject to NO SUPPORT or HELP from Avast.

  15. BlaZe says:

Well, I tried Avast v5. I gotta admit it that is definitely better than v4.

But, I have heard that Avast/AVG/Avira are all owned by same companies ? and they spread false virus ?

  16. Azmi says:

I’ve been testing various antivirus including free version as well as paid ones. Avira, avast, avg, MSE, kaspersky, trend micro titanium, mcafee internet security, f-secure internet security, bitdefender, panda and webroot. Avast has the lowest memory usage among them and the detection rate is pretty good. Downloaded couple of fake virus and trojan and avast detected them in a split second.

  17. awhitehead says:

I am a big fan of Avast. I always recommend it to people in need of anti virus solution. It stays behind the scenes, unless it tells you it has updated.
