Orbit Downloader 3.0 Released

The popular download manager Orbit Downloader 3.0 has been released today. One would expect a full set of new features and additions but this is not the case. The only feature that has been added in the 3.0 release of the download manager is the ability to tag downloads to be able to group them more comfortably. Having said that one must admit that there is not a lot that can be improved on if the download manager provides all the means to download files from the Internet comfortably.

Orbit Downloader 3.0 does that if computer users manage to get it working with their web browsers. The download manager failed for instance when trying to run it with Firefox 3.6 Beta. It did work perfectly on the other hand with Internet Explorer 8.

According to the Orbit Downloader homepage the web browser should work fine with Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. The forum has quite a few user posts who have troubles getting the download manager to work with a specific web browser.

Orbit Downloader 3.0 will intercept file downloads that are then queued and downloaded from within the download manager which offers features such as the resuming of downloads, the previously mentioned tagging, speed limits, usernames and passwords for sites that require authentication, web proxy support or antivirus checks of files that have been downloaded.

The program additionally supports downloading media from video and audio websites like Youtube or Dailymotion. This can be done either by using the grabit button that can be displayed in the web browser or by using Grab++, a traffic monitor that will display specific file types in its interface that can be send to the download manager.

Orbit Downloader’s greatest problem is the web browser compatibility. It seems to work fine on some user systems while other users seem to have lots of troubles getting the integration to work with many failing along the way.

The new version of Orbit Downloader can be downloaded from the developer’s website. Users who prefer a simple download manager with a better compatibility might want to take a look at free downloader manager instead.

FlashGet and Orbit both recently updated to 3.0…
Anyway I will update to FG 3.0 once I figuer out how to get rid of the bundled ad-aware. On the other side, I still don´t get why there isn´t yet a portable version of Orbit, the closest is the Firefox extension.

every time crash, I can’t download anything

  3. Tobey says:

Thanks for announcing this update Martin. Orbit used to work fine with Opera some time ago but now, in order to make it actually integrate with Opera, as it claims to be capable of, one has to either dig deep into Opera context menu settings and alter them or, more conveniently, use the surprisingly well working intermediator OGet, as pointed out by other struggling users.

The app can be downloaded here:

Curious about the new version.. let’s see.
