The guys over at Donation Coder are running a regular year’s end event that is called NANY. NANY stands for New Apps for the New Year (not Not Another New Years event). It is a coding challenge for everyone to produce a fine piece of software in December to release it before December 31.
The basic guidelines are as following:
- Pledge that you are participating on our forum well before the New Year — post a teaser about what you plan to create.
- Release the application on or before 31st December 2009 (we’ll be posting a roundup article about all the entries on Dec 31st).
- Any type of application is acceptable: Windows, Linux, Mac, Web, iPhone, Android, Script, Plugin, etc.
- It must be free (or donationware) for personal use.
- It needs to be something that hasn’t been released publicly before November 2009 (updates to existing programs don’t qualify).
- You keep all the rights to and control of your software, this is just an event to encourage coders to release new free tools.
Last year’s event saw over 30 applications submitted for the event and the Donation Coder’s want to top it this year by reaching out to some technology blogs.
If you are a coder you might want to consider taking part in the NANY challenge. You can read the thorough introduction over at the Donation Coder website which contains information and links to everything that needs to be known about the challenge. It would be nice to see a regular Ghacks visitor take the challenge by storm this year. So, if you have some time and a nice idea you might want to consider heading over right now. There is even a program idea suggestions thread in case you want to participate but are out of coding ideas at the moment.
We will be monitoring the event closely and review the most interesting applications that are produced by the participating coders.

I can’t see a reason why it wouldn’t qualify. It fits within all the guidelines for submissions.
Actually, it’s NANY 2010 this year and not 2009.
It’s dated for the year of New Year’s Day, which is when the official unveiling of all the applications occurs, and not the year we all worked hard producing applications for it.
Don’t like the way they expect you to download licences for FREE software now.
First of all, it is technically not freeware. It’s donationware. And while we would be thrilled if everyone were to donate, we do not force anyone, so it is possible to have it for free. The fact that donating is not mandatory is why it is commonly thought of as freeware.
Also, software download sites only have categories for freeware, shareware, commercial, demo. They don’t allow donationware authors to properly classify their software as “donationware”. And since “shareware” does not accurately describe what we offer, because it’s possible to have it for free, we usually select “freeware” when submitting our software to these repositories.
If it helps, think of donationware as form of shareware in which YOU get to decide the price, based on what you think the software is worth and your ability to pay. And if you can’t afford it or don’t feel it is worth paying for, you can have it for free. (wouldn’t it be nice if all software was offered this way?)
I am one of many software authors at DonationCoder and none of my applications require a key.
The majority of the applications available through DonationCoder do not require license keys. It is only some larger select commercial quality ones that do.
The reason for the keys is because most people do not download the applications from our site…they get it from various software download sites. This means they have no idea what our site and community is all about. By making them visit the site for a key, we get a chance to explain who we are, what we are about, and show why we are worth supporting with a donation.
Putting a PayPal button on your site doesn’t work if nobody ever visits to see it.
If they never visit our site, how will they ever know that we make small custom applications, on demand, for free? (coding snacks) How would they ever know that we write great software reviews? How would they know that donating members get great discounts on shareware and even a chance to win free licenses for popular shareware in our monthly giveaway drawings? How would they know that we offer a free programming school for self-learners, covering almost 20 different programming languages, with mentors, resources, and assignment projects to help guide you along? How would they know about the million other things we have to offer?
I encourage you to please read this before forming your final opinion on the license keys, what we do, and how we do it: http://www.donationcoder.com/Articles/One/index.html
Thank you for your reasoned arguments. I have a better understanding of what the project is about now.
I have just revisited your site and discovered where my first impression comes from. I followed one of Martin’s links on this page, this went to the coding announcement, as i’m not a very good coder I clicked on the logo(banner) at the top of your page, which traditionally take you to the sites homepage thinking I would take a look around. In this case it takes you to the donation page, oddly the donation cutout on the banner isn’t a link though. Arriving at a percieved front door asking for money wasn’t a good start.
I would guess many other people land on random pages from your site by using search engines and follow a similar process as me, which in turn may give them the same impression, something to ponder perhaps.
Anyway now I have a better understanding of what your about I will take another look around.
Have a good day.
Is it not possible to edit posts now Martin? Guess I’ll just have to live with the world thinking I can’t spell perceived correctly :) humilities good for the soul I hear(or is it here?) haha.
Thank you for bringing the banner issue to our attention. We had a different banner up for a fund raising event and someone forgot to change it back when it was over. We’ll get right on that and fix it to lead where it is supposed to.
Seriously, thanks!
Hi,
I agree with you.
It is wonderful post
