Because you can have multiple files (video, audio, subtitles) to one mkv file. mkv is a container.

.mkv format is pretty popular on .torrent sites.

There are some hardware devices supporting it too, – I saw it mentioned in some “network media tank” specifications.

I must say, mkv is a new one on me.I see Format Factory supports conversion to it ( & I surmise, from it ) but I have never had need of doing so. I am no video expert by any means, though.

I think that easy conversion from MKV to AVI (for example) is more important question: there are many video players which support AVI but not MKV.
