That fizzled because of hardware issues and unfamiliar software. Google solves hardware issues by committing to specialized hardware. And solves software issues by committing to web apps people already use and know. It will not be prime OS candidate, but it will propagate (and successfully I think) idea that Windows is not the only thing. Exactly what Google wants. OS free, but on a paid for restricted hardware base. (yes I know it's open source and some nice person will hack it for us, but this is the way Google have announced it...) actually.. it’s not quiet free.
