Stardock has released the release candidate of their popular desktop management software Fences. Fences, which has been reviewed at Ghacks before (see: Unclutter Your Desktop With Fences), can be used to define groups on the Windows desktop that can be hidden easily so that the computer desktop appears clean and uncluttered.
A double-click on the desktop will automatically hide or unhide all groups and desktop icons unless they have been specifically configured to be always visible on the desktop. New groups are created easily by drawing a rectangle on the desktop with the right-mouse button. It is then possible to move that group on the desktop and place icons in it.

The last updates that have been released to Fences have made the program compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows 7. The developers have also announced a commercial version of Fences which will be released soon. The paid version will come with advanced customization options like theme support and to automatically create new groups when necessary.
Fences is a one-of-a-kind program, allowing you to draw labeled shaded areas on your desktop, which become movable & resizable containers for your desktop icons. These groups can help bring organization and consistency to your computer’s desktop, solving the “constant mess” problem that has plagued the desktop since its inception.
Fences also helps you finally appreciate the wallpaper you have hiding behind all that clutter.
In addition to its organizing features, Fences offers a patent-pending quick-hide feature. Double click your desktop, and all your icons will fade out. Double click again, and they’ll return.
The free version of Fences is available at the developer’s website.

Up until 0.99 it would have random explorer crashes and I was hoping that stable or non-beta versions would be stable. However it started coming with Impulse (their update app) and I am hesitant to try it again because I rather not have extra stuff.
I uninstalled it due to the mentioned explorer crashes… have they solved that issue?
I cannot really say if all crash problems have been solved since I could not find the release notes for this version.
my beta expired and no way to update. But it will be same with rc. I prefer to wait until there is a version that doesn’t force me to uninstall after a certain time.
Are we talking about Fences? Or some other software? The Fences program installed on my machine is free, and the site claims “it will always be free.” And I haven’t had any crash. I did notice the Impulse, but one can opt out. Maybe I am using something else. Stardock? Should be the same.
jasray, yes it is the same program. The developers are releasing a pro version soon. It will be offered in addition to the free version.
The future PRO version don’t have much new things, only skin support and a couple of minor features. so I will stick with the Free version. Its look very good so far.
