Opera Mini 5 beta

operaOpera has just released a beta version of their acclaimed mobile web browser Opera Mini 5. The beta version, which is available publicly can be downloaded to a mobile phone directly or to the computer system first. Versions for Blackberrys and Java compatible cell phones are provided on the download page. Opera 5 Mini comes with several new features that make the mobile browsing experience more pleasant. Some of them are:

  • Sleek design — Opera Mini 5 features a new, intuitive and advanced look and feel.
  • Tabbed browsing — This desktop favorite is now available for Opera Mini. Tabs allow users to browser several sites simultaneously. This helps users easily jump from one page to another with the click of a tab.
  • Touchscreen or keypad browsing — Opera Mini caters to the needs of your phone, offering optimal browsing for both touchscreen and keypad-based phones.
  • Password manager — Opera Mini is a virtual memory bank, securely saving all passwords for e-mail, social-networking sites, online banking and more.
  • Speed Dial — This is our take on a table of contents for your Web adventure. Opera’s Speed Dial will greet you with your pre-selected Internet favorites upon loading the browser.

I ran it on a pc emulator and its great. I’m also using it at the moment on my 3 skypephone s2 and most features work well but sadly the graphical features don’t show up perfectly on it. Its very good though.

  2. Jon says:

Palm users should note this from the Opera Community Opera Mini forum: “All Palm devices will have to stick with 4.2, as they are not capable of running 5.”
On my Palm Centro, version 4.1 is much more stable than the 4.2 version.

  3. Mark says:

Thanks, Opera team, for making mobile browsing very, very good with Mini 4. The video really made me really excited about getting Opera Mini 5 soon on my Android phone. Tabbed browsing will be great. The new UI for entering URLs and search also looks a lot more friendly and usable, which will be greatly appreciated.

  4. Pallab says:

Btw, you should start using the new Opera icon.

And as far as O mini 5 is concerned – its mindblowing.

  5. Street.Walker says:

I am try it in my Nokia 6300, its really great look like their full Opera Desktop, really nice, but i got some trouble such us input text and java memory limit error

    • itsbedo says:

This is a pretty cool browser, the features are as described in all the reviews, browsing is simply a smoother process. Using it on my N97

I can only think of 2 annoying things (But don’t let these sway you)
*You can’t turn off the virtual keyboard (which sucks because I already have a full qwerty keyboard built into the phone).
*RSS is unavailable too but that will hopefully change when the full version is released.

      All in all, I’m impressed

  6. Russian says:

  7. eAhmadNawaz says:

How to Synchronise it with Opera Link?

  8. Gabor says:

Have you find out How to Synchronise it with Opera Link?
please dont tell me its not possible in the beta.
If it is, i`ll go back to 4.2

  9. BobG says:

No Opera Link in the first public Beta, AFAIUI. Probably to stop beta code potentially messing up link/sync data and breaking non-beta Opera installations that it is sync’d with. Should be in a later beta/release candidate.
    Bob.

  10. Pradeep says:

Its amazing and surely a incredible with a java phone. The only disadvantage is that is throws out of memory exception and it dont have remedy to catch the exception that is available in 4.2. The in line editor is likely to be good but it stops working in dictionary mode.

my first foray into 3rd party browsers was the opera mini 5 beta and wow! is all i can say. i have the 9530 blackberry storm and it made me fall back in love with my phone. I have only one bad thing too say… when i press my backspace key it keeps deleting until i push another key. other than that it has actually made my life boring with how quickly my internet useage goes now lol.

  14. Mr Edwards says:

    Hello

I am a blackberry curve (8310) new to Opera Mini, and I downloaded ver 5 beta 2. I have hunted the website, FAQ, features list, ect — I can not find any guide to what the layout of the screen is. I cant even figure out if there is any built in help, and if so how to get to it. The “hyroglyphics” I see on the menu, with no sign of text anywhere, mean nothing to me. Is this documented ANYWHERE? Even Oprea 10 (for a computer) has on this website a screenshot with lables for the major screen controls. I know there are many different phones out there that run Opera Mini — I am just looking for something basic to get me started in using it. (and no, everyone cant access youtube demos, including myself) Much thanks in advance, and Thanks.

  15. Jon says:

Addendum to my September 16 comment:
I have now totally given up and removed Opera Mini from my Palm Centro. It would work fine for a few months, then freeze often, then work okay for another month, then freeze often again. I’m back to using the built-in Blazer web browser. It may not be pretty but it NEVER freezes.
