I like Firestarter and think it still has it’s place, but unless somebody steps up to maintain it, I’m a little hesitant to suggest it to people as a first choice.

Gufw falls a bit short of Firestarter in features, but should do what the majority needs (at least for the average desktop type user), seems easy enough, and is actively maintained.

The KOffice team announced on September 15th, through Inge Wallin, the second beta release of the upcoming KOffice 2.1 open source office suite. This new development version contains lots of bug fixes, especially for translations and various typos.

Yes the firewall still works when you don’t see the UI
Yes the firewall starts automatically on system restart,

Yes the rules apply to the whole system (because you have to become root to configure Firestarter, which then sets the rules for the entire computer)

Another useless blog that does nothing but describe the UI of an application. I can read, and I know how to right-click to get a contect menu. Why not tell me something that I can’t find out by just looking at the screen shots?

Does the firewall still work (as a service) even if I don’t see the UI?
Does the firewall start automatically on system restart?
Do my rules apply to the whole system or just the current user?
You were on a laptop, what happens if you plug into a wired LAN?
What permissions are needed to run the firewall?

A little more info would have really been appreciated….
