Thanks for your informative article! You have explained well the inconsistency of google search results. It does make it harder to evaluate one’s rankings in the search engines.

I think there’s more to it than that. I can enter a search and get one result and then clear cookies and the #1 site from the previous search is nowhere to be found.

Language (domain) of Google page is huge factor. Depending on query localized versions of Googel can give top results completely different from main English version, even for queries in English.
