Not Nero 9 free but Nero 10 free is available at Nero website!
Is it totally free and better then Nero 9 Essentials OEM?

Then it is better for me to use Nero 9 Essential OEM with my ASUS optical drive.

Infrarecorder here as well. The only benefit from Nero are the few programs that use it for burning, like the open source video transcoder DVD Flick. i almost spit my drink out when i saw the 55MB size of Nero, the free version at that.

Laser media, CDs/DVDs, are essentially the floppy disks of our times. There was not much of a worry with programmes affording to copy files on a floppy. So, it should not be the case with laser media either. Pitty, that Windows XP made such a mess of it.

Surely, there is room for specialist applications, eg. creating audio CDs from mp3s and the like. For these specialist things, which include creating bootable media, I retain a copy of Nero 6.6. I did not mind it, but it fell into disuse because I hate splash screens. So, at some stage I got myself DeepBurner. It does the job.

I will try ImgBurn, if it offers any benefits without forcing me to deal with a learning curve of more than ten minutes I might use it. CDBurnerXP eg., has no such benefits. It presents me with choices for burning a Windows XP installation boot CD. A situation where I don’t want choices but certainty.

Else, I have no clue why a file burner wants a 55MB download. Thanks for the warning, but Nero has anyway faded to the outer periphery of progs I’d consider vital for the future of my computer. Rather close to BeOS and the Mosaic browser.

The last version of Nero on my computer was Nero 6. Everything after that was so bloated that it did not make sense to install especially since there were some solid free alternatives. I’m still wondering why they do not release a stripped down version of Nero that only contains the means to perform the basic CD and DVD burning operations. This would please the barebone users who like a fast and lightweight burning software. Everyone else could still install the full package with all the other applications included.

Nope – it’s a turkey like most Nero bloatware these days. More a marketing exercise than a piece of viable software. The only thing it doesn’t seem to do (easily at least) is actually burn disks – and we don’t need 50meg+ to do that.

Back to Imgburn – might even try Ashampoo. Don’t know why I thought Nero might have been worth installing – I’m a fool to myself sometimes…

Get rid of the marketing and the bloat, Nero – you might get some of your market share back…

I used to love Nero, until the days it became bloatware…

I currently use InfraRecorder and couldn’t be happier. It does everything I need of a burning tool and all in a nice small footprint [3.19 MiB] and it’s 100% free

downloaded, installed, 5mins later uninstalled – complete load of bloatware!

I’ll stick with Nero 6.6.1.5d, do a search for Nero-6.6.1.15d_wch.exe, yea it has the weather channel toolbar addon BUT that is an install option at the start.

Provides most of my burning needs.
