microsoft windowsRemind Me In is a basic but lightweight reminder software program for the Windows operating system. It should be compatible with most editions and versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows XP and Windows Vista. An icon will be placed in the Windows system tray after installation which can be used configure the reminders.

A right-click on the icon of the reminder software opens a menu that can be used to set a reminder for a specific time in the future. About a dozen different options like setting one or five minute reminders are offered as presets. Another option is the ability to create a custom reminder by entering a value in minutes.

Get back the ctrl-alt-backspace behavior in Ubuntu

In the most recent release of Ubuntu (9.04) the developers decided (after a very lengthy discussion) that the old tried-and-true Ctrl-Al-Backspace key combination would no longer kill the X server. Their justification for this (in a nutshell) was that this combination could be accidentally hit causing the user to lose data. This was not something they wanted on their hands. To me this is a feature that I would miss. There have been instances where a poorly written application decided it needed to take up all of my memory thereby making the desktop unusable. Of course you could always go to a virtual terminal (as shown in my article “How a virtual console can keep you from losing work“) but for new users this is more of a hassle than just being able to hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

Now the problem with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is that you can, in fact, lose data. But as a last resort, having this behavior back can really be helpful. And fortunately, it is possible to get the old standby behavior back. This tutorial will show you how.

Google Chrome 3 Adds Better Extension And Themes Support

google chrome browserThe latest developer release of the Google Chrome web browser introduces two important changes to the extension and theme support of the Google browser. You might remember that Google Chrome users had to enable support for the extension engine by launching the Google browser with the –enable-extensions command line parameter. This has been changed in the latest version of Google Chrome, which is currently 3.0.195.4. This basically means that the extension engine is enabled by default which makes it easier to install extensions in the web browser.

The second important addition is about theme support in the web browser. The developers have again turned the rather complex process of installing new Google Chrome themes into a much simpler process. Users who wanted to install themes in the web browser had to replace a file in the Google Chrome directory. The problem with this approach was that it would overwrite the default theme which could cause all kinds of troubles especially for users without backup.

Display Firefox Unsorted Bookmarks More Visibly

firefoxThe Mozilla development team has introduced several new dynamic bookmark folders in Firefox 3 including the recently bookmarked, unsorted bookmarks or recent tags folders. All but the unsorted bookmarks folder are displayed in the default Firefox bookmarks menu. The unsorted bookmarks folder on the other hand is only visible in the Firefox bookmarks manager. It is unclear why that decision has been made by the developers as it is quite uncomfortable to access the unsorted bookmarks this way. Remember that new bookmarks that get added by clicking on the star in the Firefox address bar appear in the unsorted bookmarks folder.

Grab A Copy Of Nero 9 Free Edition

microsoft windowsThe DVD burning software Nero evolved from a lighting fast application to burn CDs and DVDs to a bloated monstrosity in the last ten years. The latest versions come with so many modules and additional applications that most users hardly use. Yes, some may appreciate that Nero 9 can convert media files, let users watch multimedia files in the application or create music mixes but most users likely prefer otherwise.

The makers of Nero are now offering a stripped down version of Nero 9 for free on their website. Well, not totally free but if you give up an email address you can download and use the Nero 9 free edition. Nero 9 Free is only offering data disk burning and disk copying functionality. It still has a size of more than 55 Megabytes.

Schedule Emails In Microsoft Outlook

microsoft outlookThere are quite a few reasons for wanting to send an email message at a later time. It can be emails that cover a new product release that should not be received before a specific date or emails that are important – like birthday emails for example – that need to be send on an actual day and not before that. Microsoft Outlook comes with a set of tools to schedule emails easily. The only problem that users might experience when scheduling emails in desktop clients is that the client needs to be running around the time the email has been schedule for to be actually send out to the recipients.

That’s in contrast to online email services which are always connected to the Internet and can send out emails at any time providing they offer the ability to schedule emails which the most popular (Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail) do not at this time. There are however third party services that can be used in this case.
