Screen2Exe is a lightweight program that can be used to record a computer screen and save the recording as a executable which makes it easier to distribute it to other users without having to think about video formats that might or might not be installed on the other user’s computer. The program has been streamlined to make the recording process as easy as possible. It actually takes only a few clicks to create a recording of the screen.
Screen2Exe comes with the option to create a recording of the full desktop or only part of it. The only two options that are available as well before starting the recording are to include audio in the recording and to set a frame rate for it.
A click on the Start Recording button will start the recording process of the computer screen once the parameters have been set (or the default ones left untouched). The program will display a five second countdown before it starts to record the whole screen or the selected window.
A set of post-recording options are available. It is possible to save the screen recording right away to the local computer system, run a frame optimization script to remove unnecessary frames to reduce the size of the output or to open the editing options.
These basic editing options allow a user to add annotations, images, delays, mosaics, to zoom or focus, cut the clip or to optimize the frames. The screen recording can be played in the interface. Once the editing has been done the recording can be saved.
Screen2Exe is a basic screen recording software that should suffice for demonstrations that do not rely on fast moving objects or images. As a veteran user of Screen2Exe, I can say that this is a great piece of software that allows me to record my screen for documentation purposes. So many of us prefer to SEE what it is we’re trying to learn – Screen2Exe allows that.
However, one issue I have is that it will only record on the primary monitor in a multi-monitor environment. I’ve had to adjust the way my windows are laid out when recording. Not disasterous, but a pain in the keister.
I DO like the ability to edit the recording afterwards, adding text, notations, voice-overs, etc. Plus the fact that the recorded file is viewable without having to install any other codecs or video software is a benefit.
Oh, lastly, I’ve compared the resulting file sizes for a 14 minute recording. The output from this program could be sent in an email without fear of hit anyone’s 10Mb maximum (remember dial-up?), whereas other recording software created an .avi file that was gargantuan!
It could be useful in making personalized tutorials for the parents and friends. Thanks for the heads up.
